Democracy before equality?

How many candidates were there in your constituency? We had six. Every single one of them a man.

I thought things would have moved on by 2024, but it seems not.

I'm glad to see that our constituency is not the norm, and that there is a more representative split of candidates elsewhere.

Presumably being an MP is a full time job with quite a lot of travel to London. That might put a lot of women with younger kids off, then maybe it's harder to work your way up later?

2 main contenders here are women, likely to get rid on incumbent male tory.

Iffx · 05/07/2024 01:52

Six men here.
Zero women.

MotherFeministWoman · 05/07/2024 02:45

I should think that it's mostly that women don't have wives.

It doesn't seem to put men with younger kids off though, does it?

Still, like a pp says, female MPs don't have a wife at home to pick up the slack.

31% of candidates were women

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 05/07/2024 15:48

Seven. Three women (one of whom was the sitting MP).

At least they weren't all white men, so that was something, at any rate.

I can't help wondering whether there are any constituencies where all the candidates are women.

What is wrong with being white?

What is wrong with being white?

Nothing. It just isn't representative of the electorate.

@blacksax What colour would be representative of the electorate?

Pombearprincess · 05/07/2024 22:47

6 candidates 4 of them women.

31% of candidates were women

And only 16% of Reform UK candidates were women so that will have brought down the average.

I live in a constituency where 97% of the population is white. Having all white candidates seems fairly representative. In a big city it would be more surprising.

We had 4 male and 1 female candidates, the woman won. MPs are now 40% female, the number of female MPs have been steadily rising since 1979 when Margaret Thatcher became PM (with a massive jump in 97 when Labour had all women shortlists). You can't be what you can't see.

This is a thread about a constituency with male-only candidates. It contains a large town with a thriving multicultural population. And, surprisingly, about half of the population is female. Yet all the candidates were white and male. If you can't see why that it isn't representative of the electorate, then I can't help you.

11 candidates, 2 women

Mumofteenandtween · 06/07/2024 08:56

We had 9 middle aged white men.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 06/07/2024 09:01

7 candidates from different ethnicities. One of these was a woman.

She won.

notanothernana · 06/07/2024 13:47
