If I lend some one 20.00 and they pay it back 1 week later. They then ask to borrow 20.00 2 weeks later. They then pay that back 5 days later . Then borrow 20.00 again 1 week later.... and it just gos on.

My ex told me if that keeps happening im never actually getting my 20.00 back. Is that true. He's confused me 🤣

You are getting the money back. You're just lending the same amount out again quite quickly!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 03/07/2024 20:32

Next time take it back and keep it.

Don’t pass it back.

Your ex is right, the person you’re lending it to thinks it’s theirs.

Redshoeblueshoe · 03/07/2024 20:32

And if you are actually doing this just stop

Itiswhysofew · 03/07/2024 20:32

I am absolutely dreadful at maths, but even I'd say you're getting your £20 back.

LittleGreenDragons · 03/07/2024 20:33

Kinda. You will always be £20 down until they pay it back and don't ask again. The main point is whether you are bothered at "losing" £20?

Jutemat · 03/07/2024 20:34

As long as you keep getting it back then youre not out of pocket.

I thought you were gonna hit us with this teaser - I Bought A Cow For £800. I sold it for £1000. I bought it again for £1100. I sold it again for £1300 . How Much Did I Earn?

XenoBitch · 03/07/2024 20:39

I used to do this with a "friend"... she would constantly borrow, and yes she would pay back promptly... but I I felt like I was her overdraft.
I was enabling her bad budgeting.

Basically, your friend needs to learn to budget better so they are not in the position of treating you like a bank.

Well it sounds like you are getting it back, but I CBA with the hassle of keeping up with all that.

Is there anything this person can do to put a little slack in their budget so they can cope with ups and downs in their cashflow without your help?

If they're just bad at money management, it would probably only take a week or two of frugality to get ahead a little. Or if they're completely skint, next time they run out of money, they should ask for help at the food bank instead of asking you for money. A small parcel of food would probably be worth the £20 that they're always short.

To be honest I don't even ask what it's for. I'm not overly bothered. It was just that ex confused me.

Well yes technically because you get it back before you give it again but the fact that is constant means you never get to feel like you have it

basically because it’s with them more than it’s with you it feels like you’re living without it.

of course if you decide it would be less stressful to just give it to them (as your practically living without it anyway) the likely situation would be they would keep it but they would try to start the cycle again with a new £20!

I work in numbers and I am probably over analysing this. Can you please give me the answer.

One day, say no. Because there may be one day you can't say yes.

It's gotta be £400

I think it's £400. That sort of teaser usually has many saying the answer is £500 and no-one can work out where the 'missing' £100 is.

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 03/07/2024 20:55

@jutemat yeah thats what I get. But my tired analytical brain is screaming no at me and I can't see why.

XenoBitch · 03/07/2024 20:56

Well, I feel stupid. This is a hypothetical test of maths/logic, and not a real issue?

itsgettingweird · 03/07/2024 20:56

I made it £400 too.

So I did

-800 + 1000= 200

200-1100 = -900

-900 +1300 = 400

Shallana · 03/07/2024 20:59

First sale was £200 profit (1000 - 800)

Second sale was also £200 profit (1300-1100)

= £400 profit total

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 03/07/2024 21:01

So I get 400. I am not sure where that 500 would come from?

I struggle with these teasers as I always see the answer but cos it is so easy to me I always think there is something I am missing.
A bit like that shop keeper scam. Where the victim will be down £10.00. I cannot see how people can't see it so I struggle with where the teaser is. If that even makes sense.

Oh just to add, that is not a stealthy boast. I am shockingly poor at maths (my calculator gets me through my work) I am just very logical.
So with the cow teaser I was confused as I would assume that is simple maths so second guessed myself

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 03/07/2024 21:02

Sorry OP. In answer to your question. You do get the money back but more times than not you are out of pocket as you have just lent it back out. You are not a bank. Next time say no.

I did once because I only had 40.00 in my bank. But I felt bad because I knew I was getting money the next day. But also I had money in my savings but i tell even myself that money does not exist. Kind of felt like I was lying

My op ? No that's real

OP posts:
Bjorkdidit · 03/07/2024 21:12

Just because you have money doesn't mean that it's there to be lent out to others.

A large part of the time (excluding people who are genuinely struggling) the reason why people like this don't have money is because they've spent it on non-essentials.

And you have money because you've managed your budget responsibly. So it doesn't mean that you should use the money you've saved to shore up your own finances to fill the holes in theirs made by them spending more freely than they should have.

DustyMaiden · 03/07/2024 21:17

I agree in reality you don’t get it back.
scenario 1 - she borrows £20 never gives it back, you are £20 down.

scenario 2 She borrows £20 , pays it back, borrows it again. You are £20 down. What’s the difference? You feel like you got it back.
