How would you feel on 5hrs sleep?

Just being nosy really. Health issues that cause fatigue but I'm like a permanently exhausted night owl
Last night my sleep thing says I had 5hrs 22 mins and of that 52 mins was deep sleep

I'm shattered Grin

5-6 hours has completely become my norm. The thought of that in my 20's was unthinkable and I'd feel horrendous if it ever happened. I'm not sure I've had much more than 6 hours sleep on a regular basis for the last 12 years!

This due to a mixture of kids (they sleep fantastically now though) a husband who is a terrible sleeper who constantly fidgets, thrashes about and talks in his sleep (he chooses to sleep on the sofa a lot because he feels so bad about it), a cat and a dog!

You get used to it, the biggest problem is if I ever have to go on a long drive (over 3 hours I'd say) as I can get very sleepy and have to stop, swap drivers or drink a couple of cans of red bull.

Jessieshome · 03/07/2024 14:12

I could go to bed at 09:30 and would get 7-8 hours, and I do occasionally, but I would never spend anytime with my husband if i did this all the time.

Anything less than 7 hours and I’m a zombie

I'm similar.

Being tired makes me feel sick at the back of my throat and gives me a stomachache.

I'm also very anxious when tired and hungry.

I need 1hr 24 mins deep sleep to be optimal 😂 Ideally 7 hours. Have a read of Why We Sleep.

Poachedeggavocado · 03/07/2024 14:26

5 hours is a good night for me. Ds will usually wake me at 3am or 4am for some reason and sometimes I can get back to sleep, sometimes I can't. Am amazed I do a full days work sometimes.

edwinbear · 03/07/2024 14:31

I also had 5h22 last night according to FitBit with 1h7 of deep sleep. I'm tired today, but working fine. It's pretty normal for me these days, I think I spend too long on my phone before bed. I'd love to get closer to 7h but seem to just wake up at about 5.30am regardless. The cat waking up as soon as it's light isn't helping.

hairbearbunches · 03/07/2024 14:33

For me it's all down to deep sleep, something i'm really struggling with at the moment. I can feel better on 5.5 hours if I've had over an hour of deep sleep than I do on 7 hours where deep sleep was less than 30 minutes. I'm currently averaging 18 minutes a night and am about as much use to the world as a chocolate teapot. It's absolute torture.

Springwatch123 · 03/07/2024 14:34

Tired. Can probably cope if it’s a one-off, but not tepeatedly.repeatedly..

FuglySweaty · 03/07/2024 14:34

This how much I get nightly. I’m a wreck.

WhatNoRaisins · 03/07/2024 14:35

Deep sleep affects me. In fact 5 hours of sleep with one hour of it being deep sleep is better than say 7 hours sleep with 10 minutes of deep sleep.

ThePoshUns · 03/07/2024 14:37

I could cope with it for a few night but would struggle in a regular basis.

LividLoved · 03/07/2024 14:39

I'm another with terrible deep sleep.

The other night was FOURTEEN MINUTES.

Certainly my average deep is well below an hour on a 7 hour night.

My sister, on the other hand, can function normally on five hours sleep a night, but she's getting two hours deep as standard in that.

WhatNoRaisins · 03/07/2024 14:39

I don't know if it's the light evenings but my deep sleep levels have absolutely tanked in the past month or so.

Iseeyoupekingduck · 03/07/2024 14:40

5 hours of uninterrupted sleep would be amazing, some night I can be up every hour.

spikeandbuffy · 03/07/2024 14:40

Think everyone's replies say that I need to sort it! I'm too tired to cook, too tired to exercise and feel wrecked after work but then can't sleep
Don't feel as much of a wimp now

Fine and normal I have a 2 year that still wakes three- four times a night so 5 hours sleep if uninterrupted sounds devine

Same. Haven't slept a full night since autumn 2019 , before my first pregnancy! I've aged well over a decade in that time and diet has gone to (chocolate) pot.

Youngest is one now, I'm hopeful they'll start sleeping through soon (and by that I mean within the next 12months) so that I can sleep 🙏😆

TruthorDie · 03/07/2024 14:49

It could have been worse 🤷‍♀️. Toddler twins and my health bring feast often means it’s below 5 hours. I miss the days of 7.5 or 8 hours sleep

It is absolute torture, isn't it? I feel for you. For me it's like having permanent jetlag, there's a residual buzz and a wired feeling coupled with absolute exhaustion and an inertia so overwhelming it's like being paralysed.

And yet, I've had two separate periods now in the last year where something changed (God knows what, because if I knew I'd bottle it!) and I got 1.5 hours of deep sleep a night for around 10 days each time and then back to 15/20 minutes again I've registered no deep sleep at all more than once. With the lovely deep sleep I got during those two periods to say I felt like a different person was an understatement.

Have you tried anything that's made any difference at all? I went to a sleep clinic and the very helpful consultant told me to throw my Fit Bit away and then asked if I might be depressed. I bloody well was after that consultation.

Xmasbaby11 · 03/07/2024 14:54

I would be tired at first and then again late afternoon. I could function fine but wouldn’t enjoy it!

fieldsofbutterflies · 03/07/2024 14:57

Tired and a bit grumpy, but I could manage fine as a one-off, especially if I could have a decent coffee during the day and an early night.

If it happened several days in a row I would feel pretty horrendous.

andtheendwasgone · 03/07/2024 15:06

5 hours sounds like a bloody dream I would love it and probably climb a mountain. Currently have a newborn and a 1 year old so haven't slept longer than two hours at a time for what feels like 1000 years

sarahc336 · 03/07/2024 15:07

After dd2 being a terrible sleeper I feel 5 hrs is luxury 😂😂😂😂😂😂

itschemical · 03/07/2024 15:07

Amazing! I manage no more than 2/3.

I reckon the wake up is worse than lack of sleep sometimes
It says I fell asleep at 1.38am and was awake at 2.43am bloody cat then slept 3.07am - 7.20

I'm feeling surprisingly spritely after going to bed at 3am and getting up at 5.30am. That's not to say I've not hit a few walls during the day! But that is very much a one off for a special occasion and I will be heading to bed as soon as I can tonight.
