Tories suddenly hopeful as turnout seems to be up. They think this might be the mysterious shy Tories rousing from their sleep

https://x.com/NicholasTyrone/status/1808885850442211568

The Tories have sent out a campaign email this afternoon saying they have insider knowledge that turnout is higher than expected. They have concluded from this that they have a, and I quote, “MUCH better chance than polls have suggested.”

Is this like the rumour Susan Hall was going to win?

Voted for Brown in 2010.
And still wonder what would have happened if he'd opted for an earlier GE.

But he didn't. And a second election might have led to exactly the same shit show. Cameron was never going to be able to hold off the hard right loons.

I can't prove it - and probably someone will have some hisotry that disproves it - but I have always felt that an incoming appointed (as opposed to elected) PM would always get a sympathetic vote if they went to the country (there's a phrase that appears to have had it's day ?) as soon as possible.

Both Gordon Brown and Rishi Sunak could probably have still pulled off a win if they had done so. Then we would have had an election in 2013, not 2010, and still be waiting till 2027 for the next.

The only exception is John Major who declined an election, but still won in 1992. Admittedly to some surprise (in my case a lot of lager and a very depressed walk home).

Notonthestairs · 04/07/2024 16:50

"It was a massive mistake. He would have won if he had gone for Autumn 2007. We were gearing up for it at work, then suddenly...no."

What a difference that might have made to us all.

the problem was, the Cameron/ clegg agreement then led to the brexit referendum,

You'll have to explain that to me like I was thick. I'm afraid.

Well after they went into coalition, the brexit referendum came along, Cameron resigned, May came in, had to call an early election because (not to mention the two could cap she imposed) she had a small majority, Johnson then took over, brexit became a shit show, he called an election on the basis of "he could deliver brexit" no one else could. I was on nights in 2019, Remember watching the results coming in and thinking the working class have gone mad, the red wall falling, there we were with another Tory government for five years, then I lose count of the number of prime minsters we had, three in the eleven months my son had been alive I think. In the mean time, pension age has been raised, contracts changed in the public sector meaning now I'm expected to run around up to 67 before I can get my public sector pension... enough For me not to trust the Lib Dem's again anyway, Labour for me. Best tactical vote in my area anyway...

VoteOutToHelpOut · 04/07/2024 16:52

@fuckthetories2

Here you go, Cameron promised the referendum in his 2015 manifesto, nowt to do with Clegg.

Yes, I think Sunak might have just scraped a narrow win if he'd gone immediately. Tiny majority. Then we would have had even more years of the party having a visible breakdown.

So you've based your hatred of the LibDems on your own misunderstanding ?

placemats · 04/07/2024 16:54

The opposition will be the Conservative Party. I look forward to seeing them squirm and further break up as the next five years progress.

Edit to add that the above scenario will help the Lib Dems to become a viable opposition Party' in 2029.

The Brexit referendum came along because the Tories won a majority in 2015! And probably part of the reason for that majority was that Cameron put it in the 2015 manifesto.

I am not defending the Lib Dems decision to go into a coalition, but they had nothing to do with the referendum.

Luckily I knew he wouldn't. No way. One of the few times I am happy to be right about Tories.

VoteOutToHelpOut · 04/07/2024 16:57

God, I am so nervous. Still 5 hours to go.

Notonthestairs · 04/07/2024 16:58

Yep, was just thinking exactly the same @VoteOutToHelpOut

🕰️ hurry up.

VoteOutToHelpOut · 04/07/2024 17:01

Talking about 2015 has triggered me. I remember the horror of that exit poll. Paddy Pantsdown saying he'd eat his hat if it was correct. Ed standing down the next day. Horrible, horrible night.

fuckthetories2 · 04/07/2024 17:01

@SerendipityJane @VoteOutToHelpOut perhaps at a younger age I remember things differently. All I know is raising kids when I have has been a hell of a lot harder than my best mate who raised them 10-15 years before me and my vote goes to someone who understands like Angela rayner. I won't be shifting to Tory EVER, Lib Dem's will have to do some work, other wise I'm Labour, like I said in my area they are the best tactical vote anyway

Edited

There is still scope for them to come 3rd.

The last polling of significance is a few days old, and the LibDems were still advancing.

Worth remembering that Remain were predicted to win on the last predicted polling but the gap carried on narrowing. It's the same here.

Maybe you can have too much of what you want ? My pecking order is

GET THE TORIES OUT (not massively fussed if Labour do it)

then

CRUSH REFORM TO ZERO SEATS
NIGEL FARAGE LOSES FOR AN 8TH TIME
LIBDEMS BECOME THE OPPOSITION

Although if the LibDems do become opposition, it rather solves the Reform issue. They can fight it out with the Tories where no one cares.

This is the first election for me too since losing my DF. I’ve been thinking of him all day on and off. He loved an election. He’d have been giving lifts to the polls all day.

Thinking of having a nap this afternoon. DH is already snoring.

You’ve completely rewritten history there. The referendum had nothing to do with the coalition and everything to do with the right wing headbangers on the extreme of the Tory party. May lost her majority in 2017. None of the last nine years’ shit show has anything to do with the LibDems.

Do whatever you want. Vote however you like. We aren't your husband.

However, don't use shonky "facts" to justify it. That's what other people do. And if you are as vexed about Brexit as I am, you would know that was how Leave won. With no shame and an endless supply of "facts" for their ever-drooling supporters to quote. Sovereignty innit ?

No one on this thread is voting Tory today, be assured of that! Well apart from a few posters who pop in now and again. But not the regular ones.
