Hate sports day

Kids sports day today . Its drizzling with rain. And chilly. Think they finish 11.30 /12 not worth me going home. So I'm stuck for 3hrs with nothing to do apart from eat in a cafe ...although I might end up watching GS sports day after lunch.

Sports days have got boring over the years. It used to be fun . Maybe I'm just grumpy 🤣

3hours is not long enough to go home?? How far do you live from primary school?

Shitmum2024 · 03/07/2024 08:51

45-55 mins depending on traffic bus wait times etc.

frozendaisy · 03/07/2024 10:42

Take a book find a cafe pub enjoy an indulgent 3 hours.

Yeah some people are just grumpy.

I miss sports day the kids cheered their team on, loved racing, got an ice cream after.

Better drizzle, and it's cool surely not cold, at least no sun burn.

If the kids love it you slap a happy face on and make the most of it surely? They won't last forever. Ours are secondary now, we aren't allowed in. Probably for the best but they still like giving us a run down of the/their highlights.

Although could you use money spent in cafe and get a taxi home?

sorry but you spend up to FOUR hours a day doing the school run? 55mn each way times 4?

How does this even work?

onwardandupwards · 03/07/2024 11:01

My dds school don't do sports day at all anymore. Too many children were getting upset if their parents couldn't make it or they didn't win the race ect.

How depressing. There's no hope of kids ever building resilience if they never compete, never lose a race. It's ridiculous.

Sports days are crazy. Volunteer to help them they will love you forever

Emmz1510 · 03/07/2024 12:55

Ours has been a bore since they removed much of the competitive element of it.

KittensSchmittens · 03/07/2024 13:03

I think sports day is a bit rubbish now.

The only good part of our sports day was the one running race the dc did. Every child did a 60m dash against 4 other children, so there was actually an element of competition and a clear winner. Only one child refused to do it, so they definitely are capable.

The rest of the day was a series of comedy events like running backwards over a distance of 10m with linked arms, so all the kids fell over or throwing a bean bag in a bucket 30cms from their feet. It was definitely not sport and no one could tell who won in the end. It was a bit shit tbh.

My dc are in infants, so it's probably ok at their age, but I thought it was noticeably shit for the year 5 and 6s who were obviously capable of much more. It was more like what you'd expect at a nursery sports day.

Yes same here . They used to cheer the winner but also every child would get a sticker for being in the race. So it worked OK. But now the conpetive side has been completely removed

At my grandchildren’s school it was separated into infants and juniors but both on the same day. Infants in the morning with the juniors cheering them on and juniors in the afternoon. There was also a picnic
it was a lovely day

Underestimated4 · 03/07/2024 14:08

Ours has been cancelled twice, my and hubby have arranged it around both work days. Two kids one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Most kid school activities I find draining.

maw1681 · 03/07/2024 14:31

I'm not a fan either, DD's is tomorrow and I have to take a half day holiday from work because it's too long to make the time up. Usually make DH go but he can't take it off work this year.
I get hay fever this time of year and burn easily and really not into sports so not my cup of tea at all!
Of course I will be smiling and cheering and pretending I'm having a great time for the sake of my DD - in year 4 now so only 2 more to go! Parents don't go for secondary school sports day

That the most bonkers timings I've ever read for the school run. Shock

Forget sports day you're doing an olympic sized endeavour daily. Surely there's a better option or a closer school?

WhatNoRaisins · 03/07/2024 14:44

OP do you not have a local school you could send to? Are you one of those people who doesn't drive and yet inexplicably lives rurally?

It isn't just rural
My work is about 4 miles away and people say just get a bus (I live on the outskirts of a city)
If I didn't drive I would have to get a bus in the opposite direction into the city, then back out on another bus, then a walk
Worked out it would take me 2hrs 50 mins which is ridiculous

Lidl is 1.2 miles away. Same thing, no bus there

Not the OP but I do this. A good run is 35 minutes but usually more. There and back and there and back. I work from home though and drive. We leave the house at 7.30 and I am usually home around 9.20. Then I leave home at 3.20 and get home about 5.05-ish. You get used to it. Dcs are 14 and 11 and I have been doing it since DS1 was aged 4.

They are going into year 4 & 5 in September so not to much longer to go.

I just asked DS did you like sports day . He said no don't even know the winners . He said there's no point .

too Late now but for future reference. You can collect them after lunch after they get registered. As they are marked present then for attendance purposes they are there.
then go do something fun like the park etc
