We've always said pudding, Lancashire born. Having this conversation with someone who says sweet. Haven't heard it called that in years!

Pudding if it's at home, or dessert if we're out for a meal.

Pudding - Scotland

Unless I'm in a restaurant and then I ask for the desert menu.

Dessert when out or pudding at home - Yorkshire.

I don't think I'd ever use sweet or afters.

NoTouch · 02/07/2024 23:44

Depends what it is. Something with custard is a pudding. Something with, for example, cream a dessert or sweet. Not sure what we are having yet then afters.

Oh now that's interesting because my Irish parents always called it afters.

I thought dessert was more English.

Also had no idea pudding was considered 'posh' as it's factually incorrect if it's not an actual pudding?

No, I'm Irish and nearly everyone I know says dessert now.

My mother did use sweet occasionally. As a pp said I think it's an era thing. I have heard afters used too, very rarely in recent times, but somewhat more often when I was a child (70s).

Pudding is never used unless it's part of the name of a specific pudding, eg Plum pudding, Eve's pudding, Bread and butter pudding.

Or black and white pudding as part of a fry of course!

SplendidUtterly · 03/07/2024 02:30

Pudding. SW.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 03/07/2024 02:39

Pudding, Kent.

Maybe in a restaurant I would say, 'Do you want a dessert?' but it would normally be 'pudding' then too.

wintersgold · 03/07/2024 02:45

Dessert, London. Surprised to see so many saying pudding - no one at all calls it that in my circles

Grew up calling it pudding (NW England) but moved to Canada and had to switch to calling it dessert. The term pudding over here is used to refer to an "Angel Delight" type of dessert.
