I have the same dilemma

I was thinking of watching the exit polls at 10 pm then sleeping until 4:00am but I'll miss all the good stuff then.
I think I'll get up at 3:00 am having recorded it so I can watch the big hitters losing their seats.
I won't need an alarm, I'll be too excited.

I can think of a million other better reasons to have a sleepless night.

SallyWD · 02/07/2024 07:31

I'm very excited about these elections but really couldn't function of I stayed up half the night! I'll wait to read the headlines the next morning.

I'll be glad to see the back of the Tories but I certainly won't be giving up any sleep!

Hummingbird75 · 02/07/2024 07:50

You are that bitter as to stay up to see others sad? Jesus what has this country come to. I feel sorry for you, how miserable does your life need to be before you become like this.

Hummingbird75 · 02/07/2024 07:51

Have you considered for a nano second this might not go the way you expect?!

Thatsallfolkshaha · 02/07/2024 07:58

Last time labour got this cocky the Tories won

Well yeah, 15 years of this crap and so many people suffering tends to make people bitter.

What is going to happen to these bitter people when they realise precisely NOTHING is going to change, and in fact things could become even worse??

I am seriously concerned about this, as all of this faux hope floating around is just to get Sir Keir into power, it will not result in any meaningful difference to anyone's life!!! People seem to want to a scapegoat to blame, and that is understandable, but soon enough the hard reality is going to sink in.
People are living well beyond their means, the country is living well beyond its means and there is a hard correction taking place, and this won't stop regardless of the party of government.

Regardless of what you think of the tone of the OP, there is really nothing to suggest that Labour will actually lose. It would be a staggering failure of every single bit of polling that's been done for months.

Obviously nothing is totally guaranteed, but I don't think OP is wrong for being pretty certain of a labour victory.

I'm not expecting massive changes overnight personally. I disagree that people are living beyond their means. Have you seen the cost of rent, council tax, energy, food lately? Many people can barely even afford the basics.

Council tax is high to pay the increased wage bills in our public sector due to the increase in minimum wage. The increase in minimum wage has universally put up the cost of living to account for the rise in minimum wage.

Iliketulips · 02/07/2024 08:33

Will probably see the first few results come in and then go to bed. I usually go to the toilet in the night, so I'll have a look on my phone how it's going then. We don't normally declare our local result until 6-7am, so I can wake up to that.

Blackhorse32 · 02/07/2024 08:34

I watched when Tony Blair became Prime Minister, but that was because we were uni students and had come back from a club so hadn’t gone to bed. Don’t intend to watch this time, have work on Friday.

The concept of 'basics' has changed beyond all recognition.
'Basics' did not used to include Netflix, Costa Coffee, Sky TV, annual holidays for everyone including those on benefits, takeaways were exceptional but are now the norm. People expect a great deal more than they did - that has changed - agreed.

No one anywhere in this country is going to feel any 'better off' under Labour. The public services will remain the same, as there isn't the money to change them (as Labour have pointed out themselves) Not sure what you are all expecting, but more of the same with a bit more of Angela Rayner is the most likely outcome if Labour win.

The south east will turn into a concrete wasteland if Labour has their way with the house building proposals.

Yes I am bitter. I recently lost my husband to cancer and I nursed him while he waited 4 months for his MRI scan. Could getting it sooner have saved his life? I will never know.
But I do know that for 14 years the torys have driven the NHS into the ground with underfunding.
Will I weep for them when they loose their jobs? Hell no.
They'll be alright picking up their cheques from PPE contracts they gave to their friends while they walk straight into well paid jobs with their cronies.
So yes I am bitter.

Aint that the truth! The whole country is going to be a concrete jungle because there is no immigration control plan whatsoever with Labour. Kiss could goodbye to greenbelt and green spaces. It will be a free for all.

I am very sorry you have lost your husband and it is has impacted you. I can see how this would colour your view of life in general.

The NHS has no chance under either party, but no one can bring themselves to be honest about that.

It is the elephant in the room. It is mathematically impossible to continue funding 70 million patients that are ageing as rapidly as we are. It is not personal, but fact.

Sorry you have been through that. I have challenged each ot my local candidates on the NHS question and none have come up with a satisfactory answer. They all said more money, when I pushed about where are they recruiting the workforce from I got waffle about removing managers. I asked about expanding university and training places and no party could answer if this was likely. I asked about contractually obligating graduates to work for the NHS for a period of time, no one could commit to an answer.

NOTHING is going to change thats why.

Some parties are lying or at least letting the falsehoods live on that the public services are going to be improved etc etc after the election. I can't believe anyone is still imagining they will, when Labour themselves have said they won't be investing any more in the NHS, social care etc.

YouknowIknowbest · 02/07/2024 13:04

Sadly if you think Labour are the answer, you are in for a huge shock. I am truly sorry for your loss, however one of the main reasons waiting lists in the NHS, schools and housing are so high is because of uncontrolled and illegal immigration. The funds and infrastructure are being diverted away from core sectors to accommodate and maintain people who are completely dependent on the state and once Labour are in power (which they undoubtedly will be), things will only get worse.

Before I’m accused of being a right wing EDF follower, I’m bang in the middle of Centrism on the political spectrum and have voted Labour/Tory and Lib Dem in the past based on the policies of their respective times. However, it’s now at a point where it’s fundamentally shifting the demographics of this country and whoever gets elected needs to prioritise border control as soon as they get into office.
