I have the same dilemma

I was thinking of watching the exit polls at 10 pm then sleeping until 4:00am but I'll miss all the good stuff then.
I think I'll get up at 3:00 am having recorded it so I can watch the big hitters losing their seats.
I won't need an alarm, I'll be too excited.

We will see 😂😂😂

I'm vote counting so I'll be up until it's finished. Depending what time that is, I'll stay up for a bit when I get home, always a good night. Gotta do the nursery run at 12 so I'll have to get some sleep but it'll be an interesting night.

How do you keep count and not miss them? I've always wondered how it works.

BloodyAdultDC · 02/07/2024 14:41

I'm flying halfway around the world on Thursday, by the time I arrive it will already be Saturday morning so will have missed all the fun 😊

Kinsters · 02/07/2024 14:49

I live 7 hours ahead of the UK so will enjoy seeing the results start to roll in from 6am local time!

BitOutOfPractice · 02/07/2024 14:52

I’ve booked Friday off so I can watch the results for as long as I like.

I have booked a meeting in for 2pm though so I’m not entirely joining the ranks of the feckless.

Bertiebellender · 02/07/2024 16:28

The PM and Tory MP’s are a bunch of self serving, corrupt, vacuous individuals who are working for their own interests, building out their network with backhanders and dodgy contracts. To further themselves when they continue with their real careers.
They’ve destroyed this country.
But do you really think that their type don’t exist within Labour too?
Does anyone actually want a country ran by Kier Starmer?
None of them care about “the people”.
The whole system is not democratic and the outcome doesn't represent the wishes of the people.
I don’t know why you’re so bothered.
Nothing will change.
It will probably get worse.

We don’t need another Party of out of touch pricks to rule over us.
We live in 2024, we need a whole new system. With real democracy.
I say get rid of the lot of them, parasites!
Start from scratch with real people and accessible voting systems with direct relational results.

The whole thing is a circus! They’re laughing at us.

Droolylabradors · 02/07/2024 16:31

I assumed most people stayed up to watch a general election! In our house we also stay up for the US election and we stayed up for Brexit!

Irrespective of the result.

We have a count down to the exit poll. I'm planning to sleep from 10.15-3 and the get up for the big ones.

Julimia · 02/07/2024 18:01

The electorate are vey fickle you know and a large majority also have amnesia.!!

Curlygirl06 · 02/07/2024 18:13

Thatsallfolkshaha · 02/07/2024 14:03

How do you keep count and not miss them? I've always wondered how it works.

Every box that comes in from the poll stations are opened and verified one at a time, as in if the poll station says there's 150 votes in there, and that 150 votes were cast, we first check that there actually is 150 votes in there.
Each box is then sorted into candidates, and counted separately, so 50 votes for this candidate, 40 for that one, 60 for the other. They should total up to the original figure already checked.
If neither of these procedures agree, either the verification or the actual count, we keep checking until it's right. The clerk in charge of that table writes down the number of votes for each candidate on a master list, we then open another box and start again. (The votes just counted go back into the box they came in, in case we have to recheck that particular box again).
When all the boxes are verified and counted, and all figures put on all each table's master list, all master lists are added up, checking that the numbers agree then the result is given to the presiding officer to announce.
Tables are kept separate so there's no chance of table A's votes sliding accidentally into table B.
Anyone else have any questions I'm happy to reply.

I'm not expecting massive changes overnight personally. I disagree that people are living beyond their means. Have you seen the cost of rent, council tax, energy, food lately? Many people can barely even afford the basics.

Inflation down to 2% , energy prices coming down. With regards to basic goods , food etc , it won't come down to the price it was due to brexit. Imports / exports cost more now due to all the red tape and documentation required. Also Europe are charging us more now for goods due to this and no government can change that. Surely your increase in wages will cover this increase.

Thank you, it's something I've always wondered about because I'm useless at keeping count and not skipping numbers.

What increase in wages? I’ve not had an equal to or above inflation pay rise ever in my working life 😂😂😂

And RENT is not coming down. Rent has doubled over the last 10 years, wages haven't doubled.

It's like lots of little amounts adding up to one big amount, then you get the result! Occasionally there is a discrepancy, and if we can't resolve it eventually we ask if the candidates are happy for us to continue. I've been doing this for years and I've only known it happen once- we were one voting paper short, never found it.

MgW1 · 02/07/2024 19:56

Mortgage rates and a lack of rentals ? Lot of landlords selling up due to increase in tax ( which will increase more under labour) as tenants have a lot more rights these days which yes Is obviously a good thing but for landlords is more hassle than it's worth. Also due to lack of houses and people finding themselves in a desperate situation , a bidding war can occur. Don't get me wrong , this current government has been a shower of shite and but realistically , Labour won't ne much better, and the more I've looked into it , potentially worse but it's nailed on they will be in so let's see. As far as my vote goes......... ' better the devil you know!!!!!'

RoseberrryTopping · 02/07/2024 20:28

I totally agree with @Hummingbird75

We need a labour government every now and again to remind us why they are so terrible when in power. I understand people want a change (and I do too) but honestly, Labour will be a disaster

Whether they're as much of a disaster as the Conservative Party remains to be seen of course!

TheAlchemy · 02/07/2024 20:42

I have been under this tory government for the entirety of my adult life now and how some of you can look at the state of this country and think “yep that’s absolutely the best we can do I’ll have some more of that.” Is really truly beyond me. I will never ever understand it.

Edited

It is unlikely to get any better and could get worse even with a labour government , your life won't change. It will take several generations to truly recover from the effects of Brexit. Change is good , it will be interesting to see if Starmer puts taxes up by the end of because he has promised not to increase them for ' working people' or those that fall under the higher tax bracket.

Lifesd · 03/07/2024 00:08

I’ll have a ringside seat from other side of the world and will be getting up as the polls come in. Agree with every word you’ve said @Hummingbird75 - one of the reasons we have left is despair at the political prospects of the country. It will be v interested to watch what happens after the gleeful “tories are out” euphoria subsides. The ones who have lost their seats will be absolutely fine and continue to live comfortable lives off the back of dodgy contracts they prob secured in government whilst the reality is there is a good chance things stand to get considerable worse and we could see a swing to the hard right or left when people become even more disillusioned.

I am expecting a hung parliament.

No chance.
Labour will have a massive majority.

MgW1 · 03/07/2024 07:00

Just remember ( mainly those who are complaining about rents and cost of living) labour are going to tax pensioners STATE pension! For a lot of elderly people , that is the only money they have!

They will get the same tax free personal allowance as everyone else presumably?
