My DS is in Tenerife and was due to fly back tonight. easyJet have cancelled the flight. He is now stuck with no accommodation and the easyJet workers at the airport are not helping at all. What should he do?????

Sorry I did sound rather unsympathetic! It’s shit and EasyJet are so unhelpful in situations like this. Which is shocking. But I just meant, he’ll be fine.

Either sit it out at the airport overnight, or book a hotel. Surely he has a credit card? He's an adult, he'll be fine, AND come back with a story to dine out on!

My daughter was stranded at Split about 10 years ago . She just crashed out and slept on the airport floor…she survived!!

ilovemyspace · 28/06/2024 23:12

If your DS is old enough to fly abroad alone, he's surely old enough to sort out problems without his mum having to post on MN?

No disrespect meant, but people have always experienced problems at airports and people have always experienced problems with flights - not sure what extra- special advice you're looking for on MN?

Exactly this. I wouldn't do that now mind you but it's all good experience!

When easyJet cancelled my flight last year they gave me an option of booking a hotel (I received an email with a link) i had to cover costs of food, taxis etc but when I got home I was able to put in an expense claim, they reimbursed all my additional costs incurred quite quickly - to be fair it was all quite straight forward and couldn’t fault them

MiniPumpkin · 28/06/2024 23:20

My friends and I had a flight cancelled in Malaga by easyJet. They put us up overnight. No questions asked. They absolutely should provide accommodation if they have cancelled untill the next day

LynetteScavo · 28/06/2024 23:21

Either you transfer some money to him to a hotel or he sleeps in the airport like I used to in my late teens /early 20s

adriftinadenofvipers · 28/06/2024 23:23

Check out other airlines - I think I read the other day that Ryanair yes I know they are shite too were putting on extra flights due to all the Easyjet cancellations.

Send him some money if you can - he's young, fit and healthy no doubt and he will manage.

Meant to add- can you transfer money to him which he then pays back when he gets reimbursed? Also, get him to check his emails to see if he might’ve had an option to book a hotel sent to him.

Scarletttulips · 28/06/2024 23:27

Has he been in the app?

They usually send hotel rooms and you accept them on the app.

They then give you a list of alternative flights he can accept.

Is he alone?

What are his friends doing?

BobbyBiscuits · 28/06/2024 23:30

How horrible for him. It's happened to me before. My mum had to buy me new flights and me and my mate sat in the airport miserable for 8 hrs with no money for even a bottle of water! We survived though. I hope you can bail him out and then get the money back from the refund?
Keep receipts and get refund from easyJet once he arrives home.
You can use western union etc to send money if you can't transfer via his bank.

Will EasyJet pay for food, taxi etc? He's got no money left

They should provide food vouchers but he’s better using his travel insurance for the delay clauses in the policy. Use his credit card and keep all receipts.

You'll have to pay then.

Bjorkdidit · 29/06/2024 12:47

Details of his rights here.

ChangeyTime · 29/06/2024 13:12

Like everyone else has said.

He'll need to find a hotel etc.

Put it in credit card and keep all reciepts.

Then can claim either through EasyJet or his travel insurance.

Cover for delays is pretty standard on every policy I've booked.

Bjorkdidit · 29/06/2024 13:25

Well seeing as the OP posted last night hopefully he's home now or soon will be.

But a lesson for everyone, always have a contingency such as an unused credit card in case of situations like this.

DougalsBlueJumper · 29/06/2024 13:52

Please note, you are not allowed to worry about your child once they're past the age of 18. You are not allowed to help them if they get a bit stuck, unless they are at risk of death. You are not allowed to ask other parents - on a parenting forum - what the best course of action might be. Because your role as a parent has now ceased. In fact, you shouldn't even be ON Mumsnet. Try Dontgiveashitanymorenet.

Jeez. Sometimes I hate this feckin place.

(Although admittedly there has been some great advice on this particular thread.)

ChickenDeChick · 29/06/2024 14:46

Hope he is sorted op!

Some harsh messages on here. My usually calm sensible ds19 got stuck in Greece last year after his flight was cancelled. He went into a bit of a flap and needed us to guide him through what to do, we helped him organise a hotel and now if it happens in the future he'll hopefully know how to handle it.

You don't suddenly become an adult with all the answers at 18 and as a parent you don't just abandon all care and responsibility!

YouveGotAFastCar · 29/06/2024 14:47

They won’t immediately pay, no. He’ll be able to claim reasonable costs back, but there will be a few weeks usually.

BusyCM · 29/06/2024 12:43

You'll have to pay then.

And if instead of a 19yo you’re a 35yo in the same situation, what do you do?

fwiw when travelling, I’ve found you get much more support when you’re 30~40yo then when you are 19yo. In the latter case, actually having your rights upheld can be tricky.

Airlines have also git lazier and lazier around actually doing their job - lost or damaged baggage, flight cancelled are assumed to be sorted through insurrance. And airlines are becoming more and more difficult around doing their bits - providing accommodation (NOT expecting people to sort it all themselves and then cross fingers the airline will pay them back), food etc….

Not too sure why you've directed this at me but regardless of whether you go on to pursue recompense from insurance or indeed the airline, someone needs to help the young person out since he has no money. It's all well and good saying the airline should do more but I wouldn't let my child go without regardless of whether they are 19 or 35. Thankfully my family feel the same and would help me out in a crisis and leave nitpicking with airlines to a later date.
