My DS is in Tenerife and was due to fly back tonight. easyJet have cancelled the flight. He is now stuck with no accommodation and the easyJet workers at the airport are not helping at all. What should he do?????

Pay for a hotel or new flight

SkaneTos · 28/06/2024 21:45

How old is he?

Will the airport be open during night? Can he sit on a bench and just wait for the morning?
I have waited in airports during the night, but it was in my home country, not abroad.

Slattern77 · 28/06/2024 21:46

Find him the nearest and cheapest hotel close to the airport, then look into insurance and what it covers/get on phone and rebook flights or whatever from hotel

Does he have travel insurance? If so contact them? If not pay for a new flight or book a hotel nearby.

Appalled at the lack of help from easyJet. Lots of young travellers just left. The phone lines are useless.

Will EasyJet pay for food, taxi etc? He's got no money left

Stay at the airport. Can you send him some money via bank transfer? The airline might provide vouchers for food and maybe a hotel for night

ThursdayTomorrow · 28/06/2024 22:07

Stay at the airport or outside it? Assuming he’s young and fit.

IAmAnAdultHumanFemale · 28/06/2024 22:07

This happened to my ds recently - he just waited at the airport. Was uncomfortable but he managed! Just going through the compensation claim now

DaughterNo2 · 28/06/2024 22:09

He needs to ring his insurance?

Crossingsout · 28/06/2024 22:10

Why was it cancelled? I think if it was weather related, they don't have to do anything.

gettingolderbutcooler · 28/06/2024 22:15

Keep all receipts too. I had a terrible battle when easyjet did this to me in Turkey.

Will EasyJet pay for food, taxi etc? He's got no money left

Transfer him some

BeaRF75 · 28/06/2024 22:26

Either sit it out at the airport overnight, or book a hotel. Surely he has a credit card? He's an adult, he'll be fine, AND come back with a story to dine out on!

NerrSnerr · 28/06/2024 22:33

How old is he? Is he by himself or with friends?

NerrSnerr · 28/06/2024 22:34

He could also call his insurance company to see if they can help

Tequilamockinbird · 28/06/2024 22:34

Transfer him some money to check into a hotel. Or book it for him online.

He should ring his travel insurance too as they may be able to help

This happened to us last year, returning from Tenerife also. We booked ourselves on to a (very expensive) BA flight back the next day, went back to the hotel we had left that day to stay and got receipts for all taxis and food, including the taxi from Heathrow home as the EasyJet flight was to Gatwick.

After initially refusing to pay (seems like their initial tactic is to say no to everything) they paid up in full plus the compensation all passengers were due because of the cancellation. It took a couple of weeks to be repaid.

The easyJet staff at Tenerife airport were not helpful so you do need to sort yourself out. Goodness knows what someone without cash/credit card access is supposed to do though.

GoingRoundInOvals · 28/06/2024 22:53
  1. keep all his receipts for his travel insurance (delayed flight / cancelled flight compensation)

I presume he does have insurance?

  1. he's spent all his money.... so he's used his actual last euro getting to the airport? None left at all for a beer before the flight? Or to buy an overpriced bag of crisps?

really???

no online banking?? A modern teenager who is savvy enough to have a passport and fly abroad? He literally has zero £0.0000 in his account?

Inspirationfailure · 28/06/2024 22:58

Take a deep breath, OP. He is in a safe place, nothing bad is going to happen, it is just an inconvenience. EasyJet will get him home eventually and I would expect them to organise hotels, but even if he had to sleep on airport floor (been there, done that), it’s rally not the end of the world.

bananamum13 · 28/06/2024 22:59

How old is he?

NotStayingIn · 28/06/2024 23:01

Surely he can just use his bag as a pillow and sleep at the airport for the night? Not ideal but jeez, not exactly a huge crisis. Maybe he could do with a few experiences like this so it’s all a bit less of a drama next time.

Bs0u416d · 28/06/2024 23:06

I've slept in train stations, outside train stations and in airports when I was at university, that's surely the worst case? Send him some money or buy ok him a hotel online if you're that worried. No drama.
