How many fans have you had on in the House today? 🙂

Ofgs it didn't even hit 30 in most places. It was a pleasant summers day (finally). If we get another 40 heatwave, fair enough. Tubes/trains I have sympathy for the commuters, I know it gets unbearable very quickly. But otherwise, just open the windows and drink plenty!

It only hit 25° here and I’m still sat basking in my air con.

You do all realise all your electric powered cooling mechanisms are making global warming, and hence the current climate heating, worse.

It’s odd, people seem so much more aware of climate change, their carbon footprint except when it comes to air con! 😁

Oh, I know. My air con costs similar to a tv to run so uses a similar amount of energy.

It wasn’t a pleasant summers day here - hot, humid and sticky! Tomorrow looks better though.

Yes?

Yep as is the fridge freezer in my house, my garage 😂

EyeOop · 26/06/2024 22:39

I’ve never seen a fan in someone else’s house and I don’t have any in mine, I’ve only ever heard about people having fans on MN, I mean I’m sure they do exist. But where do they all live on the other 360 days of the year they aren’t needed?

HundredMilesAnHour · 26/06/2024 22:42

One in the living room - which isn't usually needed but I had to close all the windows as the neighbours were having a BBQ and the smoke was blowing in.

In the loft.

They’re not that big! Ours live in our wardrobes/garage.

Yes?

I presume you live off grid in a mud hut and are currently powering whatever device you made this sanctimonious little post on by running on a giant hamster wheel to generate the electricity?

Yes?

Xmasbaby11 · 26/06/2024 22:46

We don't have any fans at home. our house doesn't get that hot even in summer as it's a shady, draughty Victorian house, freezing in winter but nice and cool in summer! It reached 23 in the downstairs rooms today which was OK for me. The bedrooms were probably warmer but they have cooled down by the evening.

I'm in Yorkshire.

Yes.

The British people using a fan in summer is fucking the planet..

Not the celebs using private jets.
Not the musicians moving masses of instruments and kit all over the world.
Not china pumping out pollution.
Not Americans in their cars that get 5mpg.
Not the endless amount of Mumsnetters that run their washing machines three times a day because they only wear clothes once and they have to be pit on an intense wash with water, electric, powder and softener

No no no... It's me,
with my fan in in summer.

Sorry everyone.
Sorry

DumbassHamsterSitterPerson · 26/06/2024 22:56

Four. Not all the same time as we switch between the ceiling fan in the lounge and the pedestal fans in our bedrooms based on which room we're in.

Edited because for some stupid fucking reason if I type '4' MN decides I actually want 1 as a bullet point.

ShiftySquirrel · 26/06/2024 23:05

None, but it's not too bad in our house, 24 downstairs.
Triple glazing helped as did opening the windows on the north side as soon as I got in from work.
I did let a hornet in though!

Work (school) was hot and sticky though. No fan or aircon.
Much, much worse for the kitchen staff though, poor buggers!

Normallynumb · 26/06/2024 23:18

Tower fan in my living room.. Mainly for the dog
Have bedroom window open now

Installed air conditioning earlier this year. Best money I've ever spent, annoyed with myself for not doing it years ago! Meaco fans are very good, lovely flow and really quiet considering. I'm a big fan of that brand (pun intended)

me too. I moved house a year ago and made the decision to have air-con installed. Just in my bedroom and in my downstairs study. life saver. I think we will see more people in the uk installing it with summers getting warmer.

having said that, I haven't needed it much in the daytime, it's been fine with the windows open. but at night when I close the windows, it really helps.

Summertimer · 26/06/2024 23:23

we have them in the bedrooms. It helps a bit

OdeToBarney · 26/06/2024 23:28

BatshitCrazyWoman · 26/06/2024 21:29

I've been in the office (and on non-air conditioned public transport) today. Several fans on in the office (no air conditioning, was 28° inside). Jubilee line was hotter than Hades, ditto the train, so I have a small hand held fan for trains. Currently in bed (very early start) with the fan on me.

I genuinely thought I might pass out on the northern line and then a southeastern train tonight. There was no air 😩

QueenBitch666 · 26/06/2024 23:28

None. I'm loving this heat 😎

Bluemincat · 26/06/2024 23:31

None. I love this weather. I spend most of the year freezing cold and hating it so I love the few weeks each year we get of hot weather. Also makes me feel like I'm on holiday.

Garlicker · 26/06/2024 23:34

Three, two of them on at the moment. I acquired my love of fans when living in the tropics - AC gets too cold and smells funny. If I need extra cooling, I spray myself with water and evaporate in front of a fan. On very hot nights, I sleep under a damp sheet.

It was 30° here today. Tomorrow's forecast to be 17°. Why can't it just be 20° every day and 13° every night?!

mrsfollowill · 26/06/2024 23:35

We have 2 tower fans and 2 desktop type ones and they have been in use the last 3 days for sure, Came back from a week in Europe (30c every day) where we stayed in a lovely airconditioned apartment. Bedrooms set at 18c 24/7 so was blissful to sleep with just a light sheet. Very humid in my part of Yorkshire tonight so looking forward to tomorrow night with temp 11c instead of the 21c I have at the moment Grin

Roryhon · 26/06/2024 23:37

Our house is 300 years old, cold and damp in winter, but perfectly cool in a heatwave! But I do have a fan at night if it gets much hotter.

Boriswentcamping · 26/06/2024 23:39

Our bedrooms are currently 28 degrees despite my best efforts to cool the house.... i.e opening windows in the morning to allow the cold air in and then closing all the windows and curtains whilst the sun is shining to keep the heat out. It's pretty rubbish as I have to sit indoors in a dingy dark room, but I have a new build house that overheats.... it's great in winter though!

I have a meaco fan running and it's helping! I love it - It's very quiet and energy efficient and we are with Ecotricity anyway so 100% renewable. I probably use less electricity in hot days as I can't put the oven on or use a hairdryer etc as it generates too much heat.

It's too hot to sleep though and I'm looking forward to it cooling down.

People who don't need fans maybe have cooler houses anyway?

Luckingfovely · 26/06/2024 23:43

Three going at the moment, and I'm absolutely aware of how much energy they use, and am comfortable with that given the broader aspects of my life.

If you need to worry about something, it might be how much I'm depleting the EU Rose Wine lake in this weather: the sun makes me do it!

WhereIsTheHare · 26/06/2024 23:43

I work at home, upstairs. Outside it got up to 28C today. Despite all the opening and closing windows and curtains at the appropriate times, inside it stayed at 22C downstairs, but my office was 29.5 when I finished work. It’s way too hot for me even with a desk fan going. Our bedroom just now is 26.6C, which is much too hot for me to sleep. We have a single tower fan running on a timer, so it will go off in a few hours. We have so much loft insulation that all the hot air rises to upstairs and then just sits. You can feel the wall of heat as you walk up the stairs. I shall be awake v early and open up all the windows to let the hot air out and what should be much cooler air in.
