What happens to you when you stop breastfeeding

I’ve been either pregnant or breastfeeding continuously for the last 6years. Just wondering what to expect when I stop breastfeeding. Are there any (hopefully positive) symptoms of stopping breastfeeding. Was hoping for more energy but google says migraines and acne 🫣

I didn't notice any major differences apart from my boobs got smaller!

snackprovidersupreme · 26/06/2024 18:47

Each time I've been quite down for a couple of months - I think the hormone shift is major and not talked about enough. It was a surprise to me!

frozendaisy · 26/06/2024 18:48

I was pregnant and/or BF continuous for about the same time. By the end though it wasn't full on feeding just a bedtime suckle.

Absolutely nothing of note happened.

Possible slightly tender boobs for an evening.

Nothing here, but their mood is a little deflated

Your breasts don't leak milk when a random baby cries at the checkout in Tesco's.

YellowHairband · 26/06/2024 18:51

I stopped gradually as DD weaned herself off so I don't know if that makes a difference, but I didn't notice any changes at all, positive or negative.

I was at it continuously for over 15 years and felt no difference - maybe a little nostalgia but physically was fine.

ButtCheeks · 26/06/2024 18:57

I breastfed for 6 years in total too. My youngest fed til he was 4, he was down to one feed a day so I thought I wouldn’t notice much when we stopped. I had a total hormone crash even just dropping that one feed a day! Sadness, lethargy, sweats. It only issued a couple weeks though and then I felt great:)

I actually thought I’d feel great once I stopped because baby won’t be sucking all the energy from me, didn’t realise your moods can be effected.

Other than my boobs never plumping back up like lots of other people report I didn’t notice anything else changing.

Wow 15 years! Hopefully I won’t have any symptoms either

Nothing really for me.
Boobs stayed the same size, no obvious low mood.
I did notice an occasional slight ache in my boobs similar to how it felt earlier on when a feed was due but not linked to anything specific and passed quickly. I think that lasted for a couple of months after stopping feeding maybe.

are yours different sizes? Mine are now but I’m hoping that corrects itself once I stop 🙈

I lost weight with zero effort. I wasn’t one of those lucky people who lost weight whilst breastfeeding, in fact it was the opposite and my body clung onto excess weight but as soon as I stopped breastfeeding it mostly dropped off. So that was a nice bonus for me!

YellowHairband · 26/06/2024 19:12

Mine were different sizes while feeding, and they've evened out, but they are not the same size as each other.
Although tbf they weren't the same size even pre-pregnancy.

BertieBotts · 26/06/2024 19:16

I didn't notice any changes either. DS1 fed until just over 4 so that was nearly 5 years! DS3 is winding down now, so I've been continuously pregnant or breastfeeding since December 2017 - that feels like a long time when it's all added up Shock

They’re not different sizes but when I was feeding they did feed equally from both sides! Does your lo favour one side over the other?

Beginningless · 26/06/2024 19:41

My boobs did plump back a bit but took months. No other obvious change other than getting used to soothing them differently at the times BF would be used for that.

same here- slowly it just stopped. For a while, early morning feed and bedtime feed, then bedtime only, and then just stopped, totally naturally. Nothing 'happned' to me.

I'm similar, I fed for 11 years and didn't feel any different when my youngest weaned.

distinctpossibility · 26/06/2024 19:47

I lost the last half stone of baby weight without trying when I stopped breastfeeding. I'd been pregnant and / or breastfeeding non-stop for 10 years (4 children all breastfed until 2+) I was also surprised to completely lose all interest in breastfeeding - I had been very highly trained in breastfeeding support and even taught peer supporter courses but it was like a light switch, that phase of life was over and I was completely over it.

I also developed weird premenstrual migraines for the first 3 or 4 periods post-feeding even though my periods had returned for 18 months or so. Obviously something hormonal going on but it's fine now.

maw1681 · 26/06/2024 19:51

Nothing much here, my boobs felt deflated for a while but then got firmer again

Yeah she favours the right, will only feed off the left if she’s half asleep lol
