Imminently about to live alone fro the first time at the grand old age of 39 - no kids so just me and that cat.

Trying to put a positive spin on it so please tell me why it's great!

When you tidy the house it will stay tidy.

You can have friends round if you want or have the house to yourself whenever you want.

If you go to get a certain food/ drink item it will be there and no one will have eaten it.

Depending on your budget you can decide how hot/ cold the house is and not have to put up with someone putting the heating on or off when you don't want them to.

Jellytotsandwinegums · 26/06/2024 18:28

You can walk around in your knickers.

Didsomeonesaydogs · 26/06/2024 18:29

Nobody to answer to,
I can fall asleep listening to podcasts without having to wear headphones,
Never have to justify why I’m sitting down doing nothing,
Can cook and eat what I want without taking anyone else’s preferences into account,
Everything is always as I left it and nobody else ever hides moves my stuff,
House stays tidy,
Pure freedom, I love it!

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 26/06/2024 18:30

The peace.

That I can do whatever I want whenever I want.

The peace.

That no one eats my food

More peace.

You can walk around in your knickers.

Ohhh this is EXACTLY what I came here to say!

And, like @Daisy12Maisie says, when it’s tidy it stays that way, but also, when you have a project spread out all over the floor or table, it ALSO stays that way. My dining table is covered with photos at the moment and it’s fine!

BestestBrownies · 26/06/2024 18:32

You won't have to listen to the fucking TV all evening and then have it keeping you awake for several hours once you've gone to bed.

If you do decide to watch something one day, you can catch up on an interesting foreign language film/series instead of suffering through some utter shite with loads of explosions/screeching tyres/screaming/bullets firing and a farcical, predictable plot with cheesy dialogue.

Cellotapedispenser · 26/06/2024 18:33

In my whole life, childhood and adult, I only had one single year of living alone and it was bliss. Other times I was with family, house share or living with boyfriend or now DH and mucky children.

That year was amazing. I could decorate every room however I chose. I could paint walls in lovely fun pastels without having to agree with someone. Choose all the pictures and curtains. As pp already said, when you tidy and clean, it stays tidy and clean. I could eat random pick and mix meals without it needing to be a full on bloody dinner. Taramasalata, crisps and cucumber with white wine. Good enough.

I could take long baths reading a book without anyone needing anything.

I could go out without needing to be back at a certain time or explain where I was.

Can you tell I bloody loved it :)

MeAgainAndAgain · 26/06/2024 18:36

And no one eats the last of the whatever and fails to tell you.

You get priority with music, tv programmes etc.

Bad stuff (I feel obliged to add this as a balance) is that I find it is very easy to slip into my natural reclusive ways but this isn’t good for my mental health. So I have to actively seek out things to do and people to talk to, in a way that if I lived with someone and spoke to them I wouldn’t have to. And, reading that last sentence back, well done if you understood what I meant 😂.

Bonjovispjs · 26/06/2024 18:46

Can stay in my pyjamas all day and no one sees me.

Can be as messy as I like.

Watch what I like on telly at all times.

No one farting and snoring next to me in bed.

Don't have to please any other fucker.

Can decorate as I wish. Choose a colour scheme I like. My home my rules.

doyoulikemyyams · 26/06/2024 19:13

Literally everything. Everything is your way, exactly as you like it, whenever and however you want.

I'm about to go from 5 years living solo to moving in with a partner, and I'm nervous about the other way around!

NotAgain1963 · 26/06/2024 19:23

No one else being in the toilet/bathroom when I need to go in there. And I can take as long as I like once I'm in there.
Tidying up before you go out knowing that it will still be tidy when you get home.
Can buy food and know that no one else is going to help themselves to it.
Can have the heating on/off as I please without having to take anyone else into consideration.
Nobody moving hiding my stuff.
If I'm not feeling great, not having to be cheerful for the sake of others.
Being able to listen to my radio without earphones in the small hours when I can't sleep and not worry about disturbing anyone.
Not having to listen to anyone snoring when I'm trying to get to sleep.

TheZenOne22 · 26/06/2024 19:27

I absolutely loved living on my own. I’ve got an 18mth old baby sharing my space now but before then for years it was just me.

some of the things I love from the top of my head:

  1. able to decorate and furnish the place how I want
  2. Only have to tidy up my mess and cleaning is easier
  3. have people round when I want, don’t have to ask/tell someone else plans
  4. can be as loud (within reason - still have neighbours) or as quiet as wanted
  5. not having to sort out joint household finances
  6. all the living spaces are yours
Mairzydotes · 26/06/2024 19:57

I'm slightly envious of people who live alone @CleanShirt .

I'm so much more productive when no one is around. I'm tidier , I sleep better. I like doing everything on my terms .

All the best for your next chapter.

arethereanyleftatall · 26/06/2024 19:59

Every thing.

Every. Single. Thing.

Peace.

No negativity AT ALL.

UpUpUpU · 26/06/2024 20:02

Everything! A cheeky favourite of mine is being able to fart whenever I like 🤭

Ted27 · 26/06/2024 20:03

All of the above

Plus no one puts empty packets/bottles back in the fridge/cupboard

Livinginaclock · 26/06/2024 20:05

Do whatever you want, whenever you want, and get more cats, I have three!

ScottBakula · 26/06/2024 20:13

All of the above !
Particularly been able to ;
Decorate how I want
Eat what I want and when
Go home / out when I want
Listen to my favourite music on repeat aallll day
Go to bed really early or stay up untill stupid o'clock.
( note to self don't do this when you have to be at
work at 6am the following day)

GOODCAT · 26/06/2024 20:16

I would have agreed with everyone else that you can do whatever you please, whenever you please.

I see you have a cat though, so you can do whatever you please, whenever you please, provided you keep the cat happy!

You also get the added bonus of not sharing the cat with anyone else or worse the cat preferring someone else!

Justcallmebebes · 26/06/2024 20:25

Well I usually have my DP but he's abroad for 3 weeks so I'm alone and so far it's great:

Bed to myself. Bliss
Eat what I want when I want
Can slob watching really crap TV
No football
Can read in bed without him moaning
Less washing and housework in general

He's only been gone 3 days so the list may get longer

Ghostlygirl · 26/06/2024 20:29

If you have to get up in the night you can put the lights on and don’t have to be quiet.

Songlines · 26/06/2024 20:43

Every. Single. Thing.
I love it, even having to sort out things I think I can't manage because the feeling of satisfaction when I do it is off the scale.

ArcticBells · 26/06/2024 20:46

OMG there is so much to love - your own space to do whatever you want or don't want to do! The sky's the limit!
