Snacks - is this normal or obsessive

I have a difficult relationship with food and over eating and I am trying to lose weight.

I appreciate this is a weird question.

Would you take a snack and a drink if you were going on a longish overnight trip. Away from home for 24 plus hours. Dinner breakfast and lunch provided? Or would you just get something if needed?

I'm going away for work tomorrow. I leave at 4pm on the train and have arranged to see a friend for dinner at 7.30pm.

Next day is hotel breakfast and lunch at the course and then trip home. Can either get something for the train or wait til I get home at 7.30.

FWIW I'm first class on the train so should be a complimentary snack service but it's not guaranteed.

I would normal take a drink and a small snack, maybe just even an apple!

I’d always have a snack with me, but I am T1 diabetic.

mindutopia · 25/06/2024 21:58

I wouldn’t necessarily take something from home, but I would probably buy something in the afternoon for the train. If I’m commuting, I usually eat on the train rather than at home because it saves time. And often the train is delayed and I don’t want to be eating at like 9pm. So yes, perfectly normal to eat on the train but also fine to eat when you get home, but me it would be on the train.

DelilahBucket · 25/06/2024 21:59

I wouldn't take anything beyond my refillable water bottle. If I was hungry on the train I'd probably get a cup of tea.

spriots · 25/06/2024 22:00

I don't usually eat between meals so I would only take food with me if I was travelling during a mealtime.

So in the case you describe, no as I would just wait for dinner at 7:30.

Billyballyboo · 25/06/2024 22:00

Of course not. You don't need snacks and certainly not in that situation.

ArseholeCatIsABlackAndWhiteCat · 25/06/2024 22:01

I always do, just in case . 99% of the time we never eat it and it makes the return journey home. It's part of my need to be (over) prepared rather than issues with food(of which I have many).

Clarabellawilliamson · 25/06/2024 22:02

I would stick a cereal bar in my bag.

fashionqueen0123 · 25/06/2024 22:04

Yes definitely. I’d be starving if I had my dinner at 7.30 and let’s face it the food probably wouldn’t get served until 8? And you hadn’t eaten since lunch! I’d bring a couple of snacks and a drink.

Icanttakethisanymore · 25/06/2024 22:04

If I was hungry as I was actually leaving the house I might grab a banana. Otherwise I’d not think to pack a snack. I’d take a bottle of water though.

if you are trying to lose weight it’s probably more important to take a snack to ensure you don’t end up eating something unhealthy because nothing appropriate is available.

Watchwatchmymysteedsteedgogofarfar · 25/06/2024 22:05

I would def have a snack with me. But I'm the same as you, love food, trying to lose weight. I'm actually obsessed with food. It's so hard :(

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 25/06/2024 22:07

I take tons of drink and snacks on trains because a 5hr journey can turn into a 12hr nightmare. I’ve had floods, landslides, train ahead caught on fire, medical emergency on train, broken down train…

Plus the dining cars aren’t always open or serving anything remotely edible.

You are taking about 1/3rd of what I would take so don’t think it is too much.

ComfyBoobs · 25/06/2024 22:12

Snacking between meals is a relatively modern phenomena and the cause of much unhealthiness. Obviously it’s different for small children but I think we’re infantilising ourselves by adopting the same approach for adults.

Most adults (excepting diabetes, pregnancy etc) should be able to manage between meals. I expect to be hungry by my evening meal but obviously if I’m starving then I’d just get something en route.

So I do think you are being a bit obsessive OP by thinking/ prepping so much ahead of time. You’re treating yourself like a child.

TheFlis · 25/06/2024 22:16

I would always take a snack when doing a long journey, you never know what delays might occur.

sugarisbad · 25/06/2024 22:16

I don't snack,the more you snack /eat the more you need .

JustKeepSwimmingJust · 25/06/2024 22:19

I always do, but I’m a fussy eater and there’s a risk that I might not be able to eat enough at a meal.

But I also carry tissues, painkillers, plasters, a second pair of tights, extra hair pins etc. Because I’m an adult and like to be able to cope with normal minor hiccups in my day with minimal fuss.

Nooneknowsbutme · 25/06/2024 22:21

Snacking is completely unnecessary.

TheHorneSection · 25/06/2024 22:22

No I’d always take snacks. I absolutely hate getting hungry.

TwattyMcFuckFace · 25/06/2024 22:23

No but I'd take a bottle of water

WyrdyGrob · 25/06/2024 22:24

Id shove a cereal bar in my bag, for the same reason as @JustKeepSwimmingJust I feel happier if I have supplies to smooth a minor mishap.

i like to think if there were delays or I’d missed a train I wouldn’t be hangry or having to pay £7.99 for a manky sandwich.

but it would probably go uneaten otherwise.

Youdontevengohere · 25/06/2024 22:24

No I wouldn’t, but if I was hungry I’d buy something while I was out. Generally I’d be fine to wait until 7.30pm from lunch, unless lunch was particularly light or too carby/not enough protein.

thismummydrinksgin · 25/06/2024 22:25

I do, I take nuts so that I can make sure I don't buy unhealthy food x

This. Or as I had on an Avanti train last week, you tap the machine to pay for your food, the server says the machine was glitchy and please tap again, so I did. Then the next day my banking app notified me they had taken the payment twice. Motto: bring a snack!!

SonicTheHodgeheg · 25/06/2024 22:25

I always carry a drink - especially on hot days. I am less thirsty when I carry a just in case drink.

flowertoday · 25/06/2024 22:31

I would take a snack - cereal bar or some dried fruit / nuts and a refillable bottle for water. I always take water on journeys.
I am a snacker , surprised that some posters see snacking as sinful. Some people manage well with two or three substantial meals, some people graze / eat more smaller meals or snacks . Surely both are fine as long ad the food eaten through the day is healthy.

I NEVER take a snack with me anywhere. I'm not diabetic or a child. If I'm going to be out at a mealtime I'll buy a meal out or take sandwiches, but that would be my meal, not something extra. Healthy adults don't normally need to eat between meals.
