Snacks - is this normal or obsessive

I have a difficult relationship with food and over eating and I am trying to lose weight.

I appreciate this is a weird question.

Would you take a snack and a drink if you were going on a longish overnight trip. Away from home for 24 plus hours. Dinner breakfast and lunch provided? Or would you just get something if needed?

I'm going away for work tomorrow. I leave at 4pm on the train and have arranged to see a friend for dinner at 7.30pm.

Next day is hotel breakfast and lunch at the course and then trip home. Can either get something for the train or wait til I get home at 7.30.

FWIW I'm first class on the train so should be a complimentary snack service but it's not guaranteed.

I would normal take a drink and a small snack, maybe just even an apple!

I would take a snack - cereal bar or some dried fruit / nuts and a refillable bottle for water. I always take water on journeys.
I am a snacker , surprised that some posters see snacking as sinful. Some people manage well with two or three substantial meals, some people graze / eat more smaller meals or snacks . Surely both are fine as long ad the food eaten through the day is healthy.
Mumsnet is headquarters for the food police ...

Not sinful, just unnecessary.

TippedOverTheGravyJug · 25/06/2024 22:37

I take snacks for a 2/3 hour trip to the park. Don't always eat it but if I don't I suddenly feel ' starving ' and its all that I think about

Drinks, we'll I never leave the house without one , even school run I have one in the car. It's an anxiety thing I've always had since a kid. That's just me

Tarantella6 · 25/06/2024 22:39

I'd probably have something at home before I went, spend the train journey cursing myself for not taking anything and then buy something for the journey home the next day 🙃

As pp say you're better off taking an apple or banana than getting really hungry on the train and buying a Mars bar.

stichguru · 25/06/2024 22:40

I would most definately take a snack. If you are trying to lose weight I think taking a sensible snack that's fairly healthy and you enjoy would be very sensible. If I were me, the Kitkats or Twirls in the overpriced food trolley would yell at me if I didn't!

JamShedOccupant · 25/06/2024 22:42

I wouldn’t think you’d need a snack if you’re having breakfast, lunch then the train home. First class normally have complimentary drinks and I’d normally have water or tea until eating at 7.30.

YellowHairband · 25/06/2024 22:45

After getting stuck for hours on a train that was going nowhere (and wasn't selling food) I always put something in my bag if I'm going on the train.
If I'm on a long-ish journey I like to have a bottle of water and a banana or something.

bryceQ · 25/06/2024 22:46

I don't carry snacks with me. If I got to the station and I was unusually hungry I'd just grab something or if you're first class you will get stuff on the train. Sometimes it's a proper meal depending on how far you're going.

kitsuneghost · 25/06/2024 22:49

I would take some nuts and an apple in case I get hungry.
If I get home at 7.30 without anything I would likely binge.
Let's face it, home at 7.30 realistically means dinner at 9.30.

Q124 · 25/06/2024 22:49

I always take snacks. I can't eat big meals so am a grazer and eat little and often.

QuestionableMouse · 25/06/2024 22:50

I carry snacks with me, but I can't eat gluten and it can be difficult to find anything safe to eat while travelling. Also have migraines if I don't eat so in the worst case of getting stuck on the train with no access to safe food I'd be in trouble.

Take something portable - you don't have to eat it.

Heelworkhero · 25/06/2024 22:52

You don’t need a snack.
Snacking will almost certainly be contributing to your weight gain. Unless you’re missing a meal per 2-3 snacks you’re eating. Which is unlikely.
this obsession with snacking is so unhealthy.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 25/06/2024 22:53

I carry snacks but it's a carrot and a stick of celery, possibly plus some nuts. I worry about getting hungry and I like eating on the train.

MeinKraft · 25/06/2024 22:54

Billyballyboo · 25/06/2024 22:00

Of course not. You don't need snacks and certainly not in that situation.

Not even a massive salad? Sad

Lottle · 25/06/2024 22:57

Sometimes I just have to read the word "snack" and I feel so full I can't eat for hours.

KohlaParasaurus · 25/06/2024 22:58

I'd always have some emergency food and drink with me if I was going on a journey lasting more than a couple of hours. Something non-perishable like an individually wrapped flapjack so that it doesn't matter if it stays in my bag or in the glove box of my car for weeks without being eaten.

Notmollybutdolly · 25/06/2024 23:01

Personally any train journey I go on that’s over , say, 45 mins I go into M&S and get myself a nice m&s buffet. Always a bottle of water, a mozzarella and pesto wrap, maybe a crisp? Sometimes a Cappuchino bar. Oh and also I would grab a coffee to drink on my journey too. Love a train journey.

S0livagant · 25/06/2024 23:03

No, I'd take something if travelling over a mealtime to avoid having to buy something more expensive or that I don't really want. Fruit and water is a good idea if you might buy something like chocolate or crisps otherwise.

Moveoverdarlin · 25/06/2024 23:04

I wouldn’t take anything.

persisted · 25/06/2024 23:06

A train journey requires a bottle of water, a snack and a book to read. I won't necessarily want them, but am happier for having them when I end up stuck for hours and there is nothing convenient, or it costs a fortune.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/06/2024 23:14

I'd have something like a Fulfill protein bar in my bag in case the train was delayed - food options on the train are likely to be carby rubbish. I'm not that fond of the bars so I wouldn't eat it gratuitously.

thedendrochronologist · 25/06/2024 23:26

Divisive!

Some very strong opinions on my weight and why I am overweight and a why I am gaining weight which is interesting!

Snack people you have won my heart today you are all much nicer than the "you don't need a snack that's why you're fat" people.

I'm going to take a light healthy snack and a can of unhealthy Coke zero.

Mummyofbananas · 25/06/2024 23:28

I'm a grazer and get dizzy if I get hungry so I'd take snacks, plus it's better to take something healthy than end up buying overpriced junk.

DietCokeandHulaHoops · 25/06/2024 23:31

Honestly a title like this brings out the competitive under eaters.
Yes I would bring (or buy) a snack. You might get delayed on the train, you may have a very long day combined with an early dinner and be ravenous back in the room etc.

if you don’t need it - fine, but sitting in a hotel room at 11om starving isn’t anyone’s idea of fun.

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 25/06/2024 23:35

Yeah, I take a drink and a snack on train journeys. Just this weekend my train was delayed, and had no catering/shop for a 200 mile plus journey because Avanti are shite. And that's not at all uncommon

StripedTomatoes · 25/06/2024 23:39

I would take several snacks in that scenario, just in case. I always have snacks with me.
