Has anyone watched this on Netflix?

It's about the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.

There's so much wrong with it I don't even know where to start. They get paid virtually nothing but are required to completely commit (because the role is a privilege), are held to unrealistic beauty and weight standards, ruin their hips and feet by the time they are in their early twenties, the list goes on.

It shows how backwards the USA are as a country in terms of their treatment of women that they think this is OK.

By culture I mean the pageantry

DallasCC · 25/06/2024 14:10

'Global ambassadors for the brand'

Literally no one outside the US knows or cares about the DCC

How come the men on the judging panel had the most to say about the girls?
Oof it's so brutal, the level of athleticism is amazing and they should be paid much more. But I'm so so glad we don't have this culture in the UK although I do see it seeping in somewhat

I don't think pageant culture is seeping in here, is it? Nooooooo

Oh I need to watch this!

MisterMagnolia · 25/06/2024 14:16

I was going to say the same OP. Imagine performing moves (jumping and landing in the splits over and over), so you end up needing a hip replacement at 24! And the poor wage because, 'it's not for the money, it's about doing something you love' whilst the men get paid millions for doing something they love, but without the need for a hip replacement.

Also, that really sweet christian naïve one who is engaged to a total wet fish, just because he was prepared to take things very slowly and keeps telling her that it's God's plan, but apparently wasn't God's plan for him to get job interviews. I just wanted to shake her and tell her to go out, enjoy the world and find herself.

He didn’t seem to be bring much to the table did he? Didn’t help that he looked like a potato either.

Savemysweets · 25/06/2024 14:25

I watched it, I mean it’s not a life for me but if girls want to do it then it’s their choice. I’m sure dancing on the pitch is a real high & they feel like mini celebs walking around town.

DallasCC · 25/06/2024 14:26

It's like a weird cult

DallasCC · 25/06/2024 14:26

I'm getting quite invested in how much I hate Kelli and Judy

I think many injuries happen to football players, most have a short career. I can’t get worked up about how much they or footballers here earn, if people don’t want to pay, don’t watch.

But they've been brainwashed into thinking that it has to be that way, that they have to accept the low wage and the cracked hips
where is the health and safety and duty of care? Shouldn't they be entitled to fair pay and rights?

Savemysweets · 25/06/2024 14:31

She was delighted (because she’s been set to ‘delighted’)

😆

DallasCC · 25/06/2024 14:32

It's the brainwashing that's the issue

But accidents happen in any sport, it's a part of the game and the kit and rules attempt to minimise injury. Yet here girls are forced to perform unnecessary moves which are known to cause serious debilitating injury. At least the men, if injured can retire on their earnings.

What makes you think they are brainwashed & don’t go in with their eyes open?

Dancing/sport as a career is incredibly competitive & generally full of injury. What are the H&S rules they are breaching? Does the pay not comply with employment law?

Savemysweets · 25/06/2024 14:35

Nobody is forced to perform the moves though? Lots of dancers need surgery at some point as it takes a toll. Plenty of sportspeople don’t make enough to retire comfortably after an injury.

Savemysweets · 25/06/2024 14:37

There are plenty of women in Texas who don’t want to be a DCC so I think it’s wrong to say the culture encourages it. As pp said Love Island is not representative of anyone I know.

Savemysweets · 25/06/2024 14:39

Many of the girls were well educated & intelligent. They have other options but want to do it.

Upinthenightagain · 25/06/2024 14:44

Presumably they get a great deal of status from being a dcc so even if they’re not paid well they’ll be getting followers on instagram etc

MisterMagnolia · 25/06/2024 14:47

I've just looked up Reece online and this is her bio on the DCC website! It's bizarre. It's so inane and like something a child would come up with. Do we really need to know her favourite popcorn or what her dog's called. Many of these women have so much more substance to them, yet are encouraged to revert to a childlike state. That makes it all the more perverse in my view. Dress them up like blow up dolls and overtly sexualise them, whilst simultaneously make them appear as childlike as possible. It's so repressive....and yet so fascinating.

Why has Victoria got a ridiculously small single bed? She's 24

pandasorous · 25/06/2024 15:03

I find the whole concept of cheerleading (pretty girls dancing in skimpy clothing to cheer men on) disturbingly misogynistic.

I think the directors were trying to belittle her by interviewing her on her single bed. It made her look like an overgrown child. The scene where she was trying to film a TikTok for her birthday at home with just her mum and her sitting eating cake was sad very telling and sad as well.

DallasCC · 25/06/2024 17:10

I hope she did more for her birthday than eat Guilt Cake

TemuSpecialBuy · 25/06/2024 17:12

I nearly started a thread about this outlining all these points.

The psychological warfare waged against these women and girls is nothing short of outrageous

Also really strong cult vibes!!!
