When do you do your weekly food shop?

Just that really. I'm currently on maternity leave and go myself while DH is at work sometimes with DS and sometimes alone. DH does tell me to wait until evenings or the weekend so he's able to help bring the shopping in but there is something therapeutic to me when it comes to doing a full weeks shop. Is there a certain day or time you go and for whatever reason?

I do online delivery between 4-5pm to avoid tea time and allow for teenagers to be back from school. I'm disabled so they lift it all in for me. I do a shop every 10 days to reduce how often I shop/keep my spend as low as possible. I used to do a weekly one on a Wednesday but in lockdown when it was difficult to get the same slot every week I suddenly was going longer and longer and realised 10 days was my maximum limit due to freezer space. It took some planning at first but now its second nature.

Online delivery arrives on Sunday morning. I'm quite rigid with my meal planning.

thaisweetchill · 23/06/2024 14:43

Fridays after work as OH picks DS up from school so I can do the shop in peace.

Online deliveries on a Saturday morning, or Sunday afternoon.

When I was a sahm, I used to go during the week with the kids. But LOVED it if I could go alone, I'd take my time browsing and it felt like a real treat 😄

Do you have to top up with fruit and veg? I shop every Saturday morning as the cupboards are pretty bare by then. Often do a top up of fruit and veg on Tuesday or Wednesday. Milk is delivered.

Always on line and just sometimes get fresh stuff by going to the shops. I've found the delivery guys are happy to take into the kitchen and help you unload again (after a long pause of not doing this during covid and aftermath).

CoastalCalm · 23/06/2024 14:49

Sat or Sunday , just got back from Aldi

Raggeo · 23/06/2024 14:51

DH usually takes the kids on a Saturday afternoon to do the weekly shop. They all seem to like it whereas I hate doing it. Usually I catch up on housework instead.

notacooldad · 23/06/2024 14:54

We go when we've run out of food, so no set day, time or person for shopping

No we eat the freshest food first.
Use frozen veg, bread, milk when needed.
Batched cooked foods are often second half of the 10 days.
Dried fruit, tinned fruit and longer lasting fruits such as apples are usually last to be eaten (hence a very specific meal plan).
Most other foods such as yoghurts/eggs will most likely have a shelf life of at least 10 days.

On my Sofa!

Tesco delivery nearly every Friday.

Don't generally need any 'top ups' but near pretty much every main supermarket if there's something I want specifically.

UncomfortableSilence · 23/06/2024 15:06

Early Monday morning, it's my day off so I go first thing and get it out the way. DH or I will then do a small top up on Thursday if necessary as I refuse to go at the weekend.

Flubadubba · 23/06/2024 15:07

Online delivery mid-week.

For me it varies, but yes need help with the lifting. So I book it for when there are people here now.

I used to like doing a huge 2am stock up of ambient staples in Asda on my own. So quiet at that time.

TheGirlWhoLived · 23/06/2024 15:08

I do a normal boring shop on Monday (meals, packed lunches, fruit and snacks) and a shop on Friday (fun weekend meals, more fruit, nicer snack things and wine)

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 23/06/2024 15:14

Sunday morning, Aldi (and a quick pop into Booths next door). Dh or I go. No time to do it during the week, and I don't do an online shop because Aldi is so much cheaper!

I think I'd have a mutiny if I tried that. Bannas seem to be a paticular flash point in this house.....

Marshmallowbrain · 23/06/2024 15:16

We usually go on a Sat morning, purely because we've always run out of food by then. We sometimes go on a Friday if we're both wfh so we don't have to take the boys.

Decafflatteplease · 23/06/2024 15:17

Online delivery every Sunday morning plus a top up shop either online or in person midweek

SatinHeart · 23/06/2024 15:17

2 fairly similar sized online deliveries per week, normally Thursday and Sunday.

BreakfastOfWaffles · 23/06/2024 15:27

I have an online delivery early evening every Friday. I love coming down on a Saturday morning to a fully stocked kitchen.

mindutopia · 23/06/2024 15:30

It’s usually home delivery for Saturday so that we have snacks and fresh food in for the weekend, when we’re all home and eating the most.

When I was on mat leave I’d do it during the week (in store) because it was an excuse to get out of the house.

I definitely don’t do it evenings (surely bringing the shopping in from the car is the easy bit!), because I’d rather be home in the evenings and they are already busy enough.

avocadotofu · 23/06/2024 15:41

Our online delivery comes on Saturday morning.

Sheknowsaboutme · 23/06/2024 16:07

10amSunday morning or later on after 7pm mid week.

I absolutely hate going to the supermarket when every other fucker is there with all the kids and gran like its a family day out.

NewName24 · 23/06/2024 16:18

Different things at different times of life.

When we had babies, I used to like going in the evening, when it was quiet and dh could look after dc.

Prior to that, it was more haphazard and we could do things more on impulse.

Nowadays, I work PT and choose to go late morning or late afternoon, when it is a bit quieter, but doesn't break into my evenings.
