Booked tomorrow for a filling but I have such a sore throat
Feel slightly unwell
Tired and achy
My mouth hurts to even open it
I've waited two months for this appointment
It started 3 days ago and getting no better

Decide tomorrow. Phone the dentist first and see what they say. If they're happy to do the job then go for it. Try gargling with good quality soluble aspirin first.

tbstandsoff · 23/06/2024 11:15

Yeah I will see how I feel tomorrow
I'm starting to get a cough now too which is annoying

gamerchick · 23/06/2024 11:17

Typical isn't it? If you didn't have a cough I would go. They won't see you if you're coughing though. I'm sure they'll have another appointment come Christmas. So frustrating.

A problem with a tooth can cause a sore throat…..

Willmafrockfit · 23/06/2024 11:54

there is normally that sort of questionnaire sent to me, do you then the questionnaire?

Riverswims · 23/06/2024 11:57

Please don't; then we catch it and become ill then give it to our families and miss work therefore pay and school. thanks

BobbyBiscuits · 23/06/2024 11:59

Mine charges a fee if I don't cancel in 24 hours. Hopefully yours doesn't! You certainly shouldn't go with those symptoms. It will be painful for you as well to open mouth that much etc. and the dentist could get sick. Get a GP appt asap for the throat, then once it's cleared go back to dentist.

RedYellowPinkGreenPurpleOrangeBlue · 23/06/2024 12:01

I thought you were actually asking if you should go to the dentist to ask him to give you something for your sore throat. I thought, 'why wouldn't you go to the doctors? That's weird!' 😬 Anyway, clearly I'm stupid... Grin

Tricky one. See how you feel in the morning. But if it's just a sore throat, I don't think there should be too much of a problem. I think the problem is if you you're really severely bunged up, and sniffing and snuffling and coughing. THAT would be a problem. Just a sore throat shouldn't make much difference. The dentist AND the dental nurse always wear masks.

If you have a cough developing that doesn't bode well. As I say, see how you feel tomorrow. Careful though, because many dentists want 24 hours notice for a cancellation, or they will charge for the appointment... Some will charge in full. (Although I do fail to see how this is possible if it's a Monday appointment, and you get ill over the weekend!)

I once went to my dental appointment with tonsillitis. I let them know beforehand and were fine about it. They just used PPE. I think it just depends on practice policy.

tbstandsoff · 23/06/2024 13:03

It's not the tooth causing the sore throat
It's a virus
I feel like I have a cold coming on
My tooth doesn't give me any issues as it's only a small filling

Strepsils were a lifesaver when I had a sore throat with covid. I would phone first thing tomorrow and ask if you should go to the appointment. If they say no then surely that couldn't be considered cancelling could it?

entiredayfighting · 23/06/2024 13:44

Dentist here. Please don't go if you are unwell and have an infectious virus, it's not fair on the staff

tbstandsoff · 23/06/2024 13:47

Does it sound like tonsillitis
The right side of my throat at the back is white with a red streak of what looks like blood
The left on tonsil has white stringy gunk (not dots )
Is this likely to be just a viral throat ?
Im freezing cold even tho it's hot outside ?

Redyellow don’t worry I thought exactly the same!

Kinsters · 23/06/2024 13:54

I would cancel but that's because where I live they wouldn't charge me for cancelling and I'd have a replacement appointment within a week. If I was going to be charged and then have to wait three months for another appointment I'd think twice about cancelling!

You could call them and say you have a cold and you're happy to come along if they're happy to see you. Then it's them cancelling and not you and hopefully you wouldn't be charged.

Readysteadygoo · 23/06/2024 14:01

Yes I would go because the charge is £100 at my dentist and they won't see you again until it's paid. If they choose to not treat you when you get there then at least it wasn't because you didn't go

tbstandsoff · 23/06/2024 14:05

@Readysteadygoo so you can't reschedule appointment without a £100 charge ?
That's ridiculous

Gargle with a salt/water solution a few times today. It'll make it go away a lot quicker.

I took my DD to a hospital dentists appointment when she had a cold (because it took months to get an appointment) they were just happy that I'd forewarned them.

Readysteadygoo · 23/06/2024 14:33

Agree @tbstandsoff if 24 hours or less notice they have a charge of £100 which is often a lot more than the treatment would have been since they are NHS. They don't accept email but may take a voicemail over the weekend if the app is on the Monday. Awful, but I have to be grateful we are lucky enough to have a dentist!

Readysteadygoo · 23/06/2024 14:33

Can you gargle with some warm salt water and see if it eases your throat a bit?

rainingcats · 23/06/2024 14:36

I would phone first thing and say that you have a sore throat / cough and wanted to check before coming in that the dentist was still happy to see you. If you cancel then they could still charge you but if they decide they would rather not treat you then I don’t think they would be able to charge you.

olympicsrock · 23/06/2024 14:40

I’m a doctor - would be pissed of if someone came for a planned procedure with a bug . Agree with the dentist that it’s not fair on the staff.
Guve them the chance wo allow you to cancel without charge. Sounds like you would struggle with the treatment too tbh.
