Do liquids still have to be in clear bag at airport security?

In the Uk
I know it's a 100ml rule
But do they have to be in clear bag ?

I work at Manchester airport. The staff still have to do this daily I wouldn't take the risk

Pammela2 · 17/06/2024 20:51

I read recently that Manchester no longer had the 100ml limit. Has this since changed? Is it back to the usual?

It never changed 🙂

@bumpetybumpbump do liquids have to be in one bag ? Or can I just place them in my carry on luggage bag

Mine were in a transparent makeup back in my hand luggage

westcountrywoman · 17/06/2024 21:00

Yes at Gatwick last week. They provide the bags at security.
Friends flew out of Bristol a couple of weeks ago. They could leave liquids in hand luggage.

I'm in Newcastle
All these changing rules are confusing me
We have checked in ,not travelling for two weeks yet so have time to buy clear bags if needs be

No you don't, they have new scanners and can take up to 2 litres of liquid now. They don't even come out of your bag

ivegotthisyeah · 17/06/2024 21:01

We flew through Newcastle June 8th could take 2l of liquids and no items in a plastics bags.
Midnight that night so June 9th changed back to normal rules due to government changing it back for some unknown reason. I can't tell you how amazing it was to take drinks liquids etc through so much faster and easier, literally put out hand luggage in a tray that's all we had to do!
At Newcastle they have the fancy new scanners but government have done a U turn on the new rules!

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 17/06/2024 21:03

It varies by airport and by week

Stinkerantibiotic · 17/06/2024 21:03

I'd assume they are still doing full checks as the govt did a massive u-turn on this last week.

gettinabitwindy · 17/06/2024 21:05

Basically it depends on the airport so you'll have to check yours.

MotherWol · 17/06/2024 21:15

Heathrow T2 last week, liquids still needed to be in a separate clear bag, less than 100ml, and laptop out of hand luggage. Flying back in from Geneva everything had to stay in hand luggage though - it’s very confusing!

MoserRothOrangeandAlmond · 17/06/2024 21:22

Travelled from Newcastle 2 weeks ago.
Liquids in normal carry on but had to be under 100mls.
The only things needed to be removed were laptops

poppym12 · 17/06/2024 21:36

It varies by airport and seemingly each week at the moment.

I'm still using the one clear bag with 100ml limit as I'm used to packing like that now and if it needs to come out at security it's easy to grab.

Overseas airports aren't all set up with the new scanners yet so the usual clear bag placed in the tray will often apply on the way home anyway.

mrstea301 · 17/06/2024 21:52

We flew to London and back in the last fortnight and had to have all liquids in the clear bag. They actually went through my makeup bag and added more stuff to the clear bag, such as powder blush and eyeshadow and pawpaw cream, so it may have expanded past just liquids.

Auburngal · 17/06/2024 22:20

@mrstea301 some make up is classed as a paste. I would put all make up in your clear bag just to be on the safe side

Newcastle has just brought 100ml back in
If you need clear bags then they will have them free of charge

SallyWD · 17/06/2024 22:34

It depends on the airport and the sort of scanners they have. You need to check with what never airports you're passing through.

Fluffypuppy1 · 17/06/2024 22:37

As pp have said, it depends on which airport and terminal. We flew Heathrow T3 fast track recently and they had the new scanners so no need to remove anything from our bags.

NewName24 · 17/06/2024 22:43

It varies by airport, and remember that means it might be different on your way home, as the destination airport might well have different rules, so the best thing is to have everything in containers of 100ml or less, in a clear plastic bag, and then if you don't have to remove them, nothing lost, but if you do, you are ready.

Omg really? It was great in April not having to do that!

Movingon2024 · 17/06/2024 23:04

So yes, from Newcastle you need a clear plastic bag, and no liquids over 100ml.

( they do have spare bags at security though)

and unless govt changes the rules back again before you go….

TruthThatsHardAsSteel · 17/06/2024 23:16

turnoutthelightss · 17/06/2024 20:31

So my understanding is we can have as many liquids as we like as long as they are in a bag and not over 100ml
And they don't need to be removed at security
Is this correct ?

The data I found said up to a maximum of 1 litre and there's a list of what's counted as liquid as well.

Bjorkdidit · 18/06/2024 04:59

It's all over the place at the moment and you have to be prepared for either scenario, especially, don't take anything bigger than 100 ml and don't take more than will fit in the 20 cm square plastic bag otherwise you risk having to throw something away to get through security.

They do have the new scanners at Newcastle, but there's been issues both with reliability (machines breaking down or over half of searches having to go for a rescan) and a few days ago there was a UK wide 'back to the 100 ml and bags' rule that may have now been dropped, but I wouldn't rely on it tbh.

We flew through Leeds a few weeks ago and they also had the new scanners and the Jet2 hold baggage drop off was telling everyone they could take all liquids through without having to take out of bags but then when we got to security the queue was massive (took us 40 mins in the end and they were pulling people out to go through the repurposed fast track lane if they were still in the queue an hour before take off time).

When we got to the front there was 3 new scanners and one old one in use and they made us go through the old style with the under 100 ml rules. Fortunately we didn't have anything above this but I would have been mighty pissed off if I did and faced losing it after being told that I could take it through security.

Yes, this. Don't forget that you might not be able to bring things home again even if you can take them out with you.
