Which lane should you be in? Diagram!

If you were driving from where the red arrow is towards the roundabout, and going straight ahead to where the green arrow is, which lane should you be in?

Context is that I had a collision on this roundabout over 2 years ago, still hasn't been resolved and is now likely to go to court! Other driver claiming they were in correct lane, I believe I was...

See these images show left lane. Good luck

Those images show Roundabouts with painted lane markings. There were no lane markings.

As someone else said, I was taught that in the absence of lane markings, it's left lane to go straight.

But as above, I think there were likely more important factors than lane choice in the accident.

Floralnomad · 17/06/2024 14:56

I would be in the left hand lane

But those images aren't from the Highway Code.

The genuine Highway Code is available online for free, so why use a poor unauthorised copy?

Left here too, however, there’s always drivers that don’t follow the same logic as the majority so I’m always aware and can usually sense when they are going to ‘push in’:

I recon you were in the left and they were in the right and the collision happened but their argument is wasn’t the 12 o clock rule (more like 1’o clock) so they believe they were right by staying in the right lane….

I think that’s why it’s going to court as it’s all on technicalities, despite most people saying they would stay in the left lane.

I also think locals know the score and it tends to be people unfamiliar with the area that end up causing these crashes.

Tell me I’m wrong?! 😜

Peacelily001 · 17/06/2024 15:00

Left lane.
Which one were you in OP?

Penfeatherington · 17/06/2024 15:02

Left lane as the exit road does not have two delineated lanes.

How would you know that before you got to it?

LightSpeeds · 17/06/2024 15:05

Left lane

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 17/06/2024 15:07

I'd instinctively go for the left lane if it's an undeniable straight on, but I'd anticipate there could be someone leaving at the same exit from the right lane as it could appear to be slightly past 12 o'clock as you approach and a driver who doesn't know the roundabout might expect there to be two lanes on the exit.

MigGirl · 17/06/2024 15:09

Left lane, as the roundabout doesn't have road markings. But the highway code doesn't state Must so it could be either or just that you have to give way to traffic from your right.

Really need to know what happened now op. 😕

Willmafrockfit · 17/06/2024 15:10

i think it would be either

Pinkbits · 17/06/2024 15:11

It's 2 in and 1 out but the 1 out is very wide so I can see why people take the right lane on entry and merge on the exit to try and get ahead of traffic.

Xiaoxiong · 17/06/2024 15:18

Agree with @PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich

It doesn't look like a perfectly "straight across" to me either, I wonder if from the point of view of coming into the roundabout it appears that the green arrow is actually more like 1 o'clock or even further over so people think they're actually "turning right" so use the right lane. It's also not clear in the picture whether there are two lanes on the green arrow exit, or just one.

We have one like this near us where "straight across" is actually more like 2 o'clock, and to compound the issue the central roundabout has so much greenery on it you can't actually see where the exits are when you enter. It causes havoc when people come into the roundabout in the left lane to go "straight across" and then start dithering and hesitating when they suddenly realise the exit is much farther round than they expected.

CactusUmbrella · 17/06/2024 15:18

Update to include the roundabout signage!

I was in the left lane. Indicated once past the first exit. Taxi in the right hand lane also tried to exit at same time, driving into side of me/sort of scraping along the side. He did not indicate to show this was his intention, but he's arguing the right lane was the correct lane for straight ahead so did not need to indicate.

There are no road markings on the road specifying which lane for which exit.

Also to say - only one lane on the green arrow exit. No lines/merging arrows to suggest otherwise.

Left lane of course! Unless sineage otherwise. This is pretty basic driving knowledge!!!

theemmadilemma · 17/06/2024 15:20

I would expect him to be found in the wrong then.

theeyeofdoe · 17/06/2024 15:22

CrotchetyQuaver · 17/06/2024 14:32

I would have said either lane and the Highway Code appears to support this
www.highwaycodeuk.co.uk/roundabouts.html

It’s definitely either lane. Unless marked.

LandedSentry · 17/06/2024 15:22

Was it a general taxi or a black taxi? Some general taxis barely know the Highway Code, they are just random people.

Me too.

Aside from anything, he should have been fully aware you were there and backed off rather than trying to overtake on a roundabout exit.

The Highway Code you linked clearly shows in the picture a car going straight as being in the LEFT lane! Follow blue arrow.

sundaysathome · 17/06/2024 15:25

from insurance point of view, he'll be found at fault

It was a general taxi. School taxi specifically, carrying children with additional needs. I had to use my horn to get the driver to even stop afterwards, as he kept driving, and had to force the driver to take my insurance details afterwards as he wasn't interested.

I haven't been particularly arsey about defending myself but obviously my insurance company think I'm right!

well he should have considered where you were going
