Sick son - need advice

NeedHelpWithSickSon · 17/06/2024 02:51

DH and I have been out tonight and I got a stressed phone call from my son (18) who was being violently sick in the toilet. He then said he was OK.

Now it is 2.50am and he has just been violently sick again. He has eaten a whole pizza (salami and Nduja which is a pork sausage) which he cooked from frozen as per instructions.

As said he is being really sick. I am really worried to death as he is being sick and he also has 3 A’levels papers this week.

What can I do for him right now, and…help. What can I do?

I think he has food poisoning though.
if it’s salami and that Nduja could that be really dangerous?

OMG I called 111 as he is really ill to get some advice and ended up telling the person on the other end of the phone to just forget it. They had the worst attitude I have ever encountered, yawned the whole way through and was really offhand with me when I was answering the questions like it was some massive inconvenience to them. I get that they have to ask loads of things to establish what the matter is, but I just got to a point where I felt like I was in the twilight zone and it wasn’t helping so told them to forget it.

I’m an emetophobe so this sort of thing really stresses me out, but if it’s food poisoning you really just have to let it run its course. Get him to sip water to keep him hydrated. Fingers crossed he’s feeling better in the morning.

stressedespresso · 17/06/2024 03:42

You don’t need to do anything right now, he has only been sick twice. Treat him like you would with any other D&V illness - small sips of fluid to rehydrate him, preferably something with electrolytes. Given that he has A levels to sit this week I’d get in contact with the GP in the morning so that you have solid evidence of the sickness for the exam board

NeedHelpWithSickSon · 17/06/2024 04:23

I’ll try and get him a GP appointment if he’s sick again. I need him to stop being sick.

I’m so upset. He’s worked so hard and he’s been up all night.

My DH is blaming me for buying junk.

What can I get him to stop being sick and what’s good to rehydrate?

Also I just can’t believe how unbelievably rude and unhelpful 111 were. I can be stroppy at times but I was just incredulous at how they acted and just very calmly said, look I’m calling as my kid is projectile vomiting up the walls and I need help. This really isn’t helping so let’s just leave it here. I’ll phone the doctor at 0800. Then she started arguing with me.All this at 3am.

You need to stop panicking & over reacting. He's been sick twice. Keep him hydrated, sips of water but there's nothing you can do to stop him being sick. If he's ill he's better getting it out of his system.

pinkgin79 · 17/06/2024 04:32

If it's food poisoning or a bug you have to let it run the course unfortunately. As pp has said small sips of water to keep hydrated

Kedece2410 · 17/06/2024 04:33

To be fair to 111 there's not much they can do for vomiting.

Why on earth is an 18 year old projectile vomiting over the walls though. No matter how bad he feels he should be capable of vomiting into something.

There's going to be little your GP can do at this stage when it's only been a few hours. They'll probably just tell you to let it run it's course & make sure he keeps drinking

NewYearNewMeMamma · 17/06/2024 04:33

It's a bug or food poisoning, none of which warrant a gp visit and potentially spreading a load of germs around. Like others said, treat it as any other D&V scenario and he just needs to ride it out. Better in than out as they say.

NeedHelpWithSickSon · 17/06/2024 04:37

I’m panicking because he’s got 3 A’level papers starting Tues and I’ve had no sleep.

If it was any other week I wouldn’t be freaking out

Most of these bugs pass in 24 hours. Give him frozen ice lollies to suck on, lucozade and just let him rest. He’ll probably be fine by Tuesday.

Overthebow · 17/06/2024 05:02

There’s not much you can do if it’s food poisoning unless he’s unwell enough to be admitted to hospital. You just have to let it run its course.

crumblingschools · 17/06/2024 05:02

You should talk to the exam officer at school too to get their advice.

NeedHelpWithSickSon · 17/06/2024 05:08

Thx everyone

There is definitely quite a nasty sickness bug going around at the moment, several of my family and friends have had it in the past week but nothing a doctor can do to help. It will pass on its own, usually within 24 hours.
Not sure what you expected 111 to do really.
Hopefully he has stopped vomiting by now (up the walls, really?) and you could get some rehydration sachets in the morning the chances are he will be fine by Tuesday.

LostSightOfLife · 17/06/2024 05:23

First you said he was being sick in the toilet then you say it’s all over the walls. Which is it? Maybe that’s why 111 were difficult if you couldn’t keep the story straight.

Has he lived with you his entire life? I seriously can’t believe this is the first time you’ve had to deal with a sick child. He’s been sick twice. That won’t kill him. Just give him sips of water and some dry crackers or toast when he’s finished being sick. He’s 18 and was home alone. Any chance he’s been drinking alcohol?

bramblesbig · 17/06/2024 05:23

I know it's really hard but try to calm down op.

He will be ok, he's only been sick twice. Small sips of water to keep him hydrated, ice lollies are good if you have any.

Then you really just have to wait for it to pass. No point in going to the gp and further spreading the germs.

Speak to school first thing to give them a heads up but hopefully he'll be feeling a bit better by tomorrow

Go have a cuppa and take a deep breath

Applepencilplant · 17/06/2024 05:27

Lucozade sport is good for rehydration.

WaitingfortheTardis · 17/06/2024 05:36

There's nothing 111 or a GP will be able to do at the moment. Hopefully this will pass by this afternoon and he can have an early night ready for Tuesday morning. Make sure he drinks plenty, he needs to take small sips not gulps, and gets plenty of rest. Plain foods to start with like toast with no butter etc. If he keeps being sick all day and really is too ill on Tuesday then he'll just have to take the resit papers. It will all work out though. I hope he feels better soon.

NeedHelpWithSickSon · 17/06/2024 05:37

When I found him he was hanging over the toilet bowl. There’s sick on the bathroom door, a bit on his bed, and on the bathroom floor.

He’s not been drinking or taking anything. He got sick about 4 hours after eating a pizza. I don’t think he’s got a bug, I think he’s got food poisoning.

I have had sick DC but never this violently ill.

He’s asleep now. I’ll just let him sleep as long as he wants to. I’ll go to the shop and get some things.

He’s done loads of revision so I’m going to tell him to just sip fluids and sleep.

WaitingfortheTardis · 17/06/2024 05:40

What makes you think food poisoning though? I think it would be too early to tell. It sounds very much like the sickness bug that has been going around dd's school recently.

Pontipinecity · 17/06/2024 05:42

Poor you we have exams here too and this would also panic me. I hope he’s ok and can just rest enough to feel ok to take his remaining exams.

NeedHelpWithSickSon · 17/06/2024 05:43

Ok, maybe a sickness bug.
It’s just that he was the only one to eat the pizza, then 4 hours later he was violently ill
