What's your side hustle?

I love seeing the small business threads on Facebook so thought I'd ask on here!

OP posts:

Vinted and ebay selling. Just getting started really but made a few hundred this month.

Snuppeline · 16/06/2024 14:26

I pimp myself out as a consultant un a niche field I have expertise on. I’m fully employed elsewhere in a related field.

Postslikethese · 16/06/2024 14:28

I received some training in a previous role that enables me to provide a training course to other people. I offer it on behalf of my current employer but also offer it evenings and weekends through my own Ltd company.

PuttingDownRoots · 16/06/2024 14:28

3D printing. Once you know what you are doing, and have the equipment it can be quite lucrative.

Do you buy from charity shops etc and sell on? How much time do you devote to oy including packing and posting?

Tootyfilou · 16/06/2024 14:35

@PuttingDownRoots That sounds really interesting. What sorts of things do you print?

Intrigued by this @PuttingDownRoots

Suomynona · 16/06/2024 14:58

@Bbq1 I have bought a few bits from charity shops and car boot sales, but some of it was my own stuff that I no longer wanted. I need a more reliable source of goods though so just getting into buying 'job lots' etc.

I do that as well. I go quite long periods without anything, but when it comes along it's very well paid.

FieldsOfFlours · 16/06/2024 15:45

I sell Printables on Etsy

Cerialkiller · 16/06/2024 15:59

It started as a side hustle but then my real job got rid of me🙄so I'm transitioning to (hopefully) full time freelancing once DD starts school.

I do 3d visualization, rendered environments and design in a niche construction field. Learned a new piece of software for it specifically a few years ago.

This is interesting, aren't their legal issues with printing Warhammer pieces and selling for profit, or are they original models?

@Cerialkiller yes the designers (who we buy licenses off) have to tread a really fine line. Sometimes Warhammer argue with them, and we have to withdraw products.

So its similar pieces, but not exactly the same.

Thanks
I might try it, would be amazing to earn a few hundred a month from it.

I've been doing adult foreign language tuition on the side (on and off) for years. I used to do classes but generally 1:1 now. There's much more flexibility these days because it can be done online.

I don't do it all the time but it's nice to have on stand-by, just in case..

MonsteraMama · 16/06/2024 17:03

I sell on Vinted and eBay.

I trawl charity shops for designer items, they often underprice them so it's easy to make a profit if you have time, and my niche on eBay is rare videogames. People "having a clear out" often donate old games to charity shops having no idea what they're worth. Best find recently was an excellent condition copy of Clocktower on the PS1 which I bought for a tenner and sold for £400 on eBay.

Make an extra few hundred or so a month typically depending on what I manage to find.

Blender. it's free which was the main draw. Lots of tutorials on youtube to get you started. I wouldn't recommend the donut tutorial first, it's worth doing but start with something simpler that you can do in an hour or two to get used to the basics.

If you find it overwhelming to start with that's normal! The meme online is that people download it open it then close it and cry because they can't do anything, even move the view. It gets easier very quickly.

I've been using it professionally for 3 years and only decent at a few features. Modelling and texturing mostly. Sculpting is really fun, then there's animation, lighting etc.

DoAWheelie · 16/06/2024 17:16

I don't do it anymore as I'm too sick to work now.

But I used to record myself playing video games all the way through to the end. Then I'd edit out all the loading screens, and any mistakes like several deaths in a row and add in some text boxes with hints for puzzles that were not very clear in the video. Then cut the video down into smaller episodes and post them on YouTube.

If someone was stuck in their game and didn't know how to kill a boss or finish a puzzle they would watch the part of the game they were stuck on. Sometimes people watched a bit to see if they like the look of the game before buying it, and some watched to see a favourite cut-scene again. I didn't have any voice overs talking like some big YouTubers do.

I would make about £1 per 1000 views and some videos would get about a million views - and each game had about 10-15 videos each. It would take about 2-3 weeks per game to finish.

CJ0374 · 16/06/2024 17:21

I do online surveys, buts its maybe £10 a month, so more like a hobby. I also crochet rugs which I donate to charity/hospices, so don't earn money from it. I have friends though that have side lines other than their main job:

  • Friend works in banking but did a nail and massage therapy course. She does these from home. Her gel and acrylic nails last far longer than the regular nail bars.
  • 2 friends are nurses. 1 teaches CPR/first aid/choking to new parents/grandparents. The other did prescriber training and does aesthetics.
  • My older neighbour puts adverts on next door and the local magazine. He collects old/unwanted bicycles and does them up to sell
  • A school friend teaches yoga online

Quick heads-up just in case anyone needs to know...

If you are selling your own unwanted clothes and stuff on ebay/vinted etc, that is fine, but if you are buying stuff to sell on, then HMRC views that as a business so you need to register as self-employed and you may need to pay tax on the profits.
