What's your side hustle?

I love seeing the small business threads on Facebook so thought I'd ask on here!

I run a children’s group in my local area. The hall is £13.50, I bulk buy supplies and charge £7 per child. It’s quite a good earner! I make about £80 per week.

I forgot! Another friend does proof reading in his own time. He did a course years ago and mainly reviews high school and uni students papers, but has also done ad hoc work for magazines etc.

TeamPolin · 16/06/2024 18:16

I do freelance writing within a particular hobby niche that I'm quite knowledgeable on. It's a very casual thing - maybe one thing every few months. It generally brings in an extra £800 a year.

What do you make? I have the skills for this and cad design. Where do you sell it?

I'm thinking same thing as I can 3d model too and can build things in the right format. Got lots of ideas now!

I've taken a look on Etsy, key chains are common. I was thinking that perhaps people would like 3d models to paint. But it's hard to see what's doing well and where the gaps are. What are you thinking of doing?

TinDogTavern · 16/06/2024 20:32

Airbnb. I live in a big city that hosts stadium gigs/sporting events and doesn't have enough hotel capacity. I have very understanding friends who let me stay over so I let the whole house (very modest two bed terrace, but close to centre). It pays for holidays.

Curlyshabtree · 16/06/2024 20:38

I do stewarding at a local entertainment venue

Charming bespoke lamps or plug in night lights. I'm sure I could design them to break into sections so you can put in an led bulb. I saw an adorable mushroom one that inspired me. Also a while ago I was looking for interesting coin banks for the kids and a guy was selling 3d printed ones where the coin spirals round a tower, they were £40!! I reckon I could make something better and cheaper.

Unfortunately I don't own a 3d printer at the moment. A friend does so would prototype first before buying one.

I do tend to have these crazy ambitions plans that fizzle out though so who knows if this one will go anywhere. I might have some time this week to have a go. I do like sketching. I'm supposed to be writing my book though too, oh and finishing a video for you tube....haha.

He he, good luck. Sounds like some great ideas! I struggle to focus on one thing too.

I received some training in a previous role that enables me to provide a training course to other people. I offer it on behalf of my current employer but also offer it evenings and weekends through my own Ltd company.

Seems like you are taking business from your employer.

Postslikethese · 17/06/2024 07:22

@Apileofballyhoo nope. We don't work evenings and weekends and that's the only time this can be done. Work know. They knew when they appointed me. They're happy. Additionally, it's not part of my job to offer it anymore and I was trained by a previous employer and pay the annual subscription myself.
Not everyone is trying to screw over their employer or keeping things secret.

Quick heads-up just in case anyone needs to know...

If you are selling your own unwanted clothes and stuff on ebay/vinted etc, that is fine, but if you are buying stuff to sell on, then HMRC views that as a business so you need to register as self-employed and you may need to pay tax on the profits.

I believe you can sell up £1000 worth before you need to register

I am a UW Partner, I help people save money on their essential bills.

Couple of customers a month makes me £4-500.

It's dead easy!

Hoping to make it full time eventually as it grows.

Longdueachange · 17/06/2024 08:00

We set up a diversification busienss from our farm when we both worked full time for other people. We reinvested the money into improving the farm buildings and now run a sucessful Ltd company, turning the side hussle into day jobs. Remember to get advice from an accountant, I can't remember the thresholds or timescales, but if you are buying and selling or advertising for customers you will need to declare the income, even if there is very little profit. Our first busienss actually ran at a loss for a few years, because we were reinvesting everything, but we still had to put in accounts.

Starseeking · 17/06/2024 08:09

I've never thought I'd this as a side hustle, but obviously it is!

I'm a Non Executive Director for other companies.

The two current NED roles I have bring in £12k gross per annum, for 1-2 days work every 3 months. Depending on meeting cycles and locations, I either fit a virtual call during my work day, or take annual leave to travel.

As I have finance and risk management skills, I get approached on almost a weekly basis to do more, however my issue is time, and that I have none to spare! The last role which approached me was offering £25k gross.

I fill in a tax return as I'm an additional rate taxpayer, so obviously include this income.

Eventually I'd like to give up the day job, and just maintain a NED portfolio, but I need a few more, paying more, to do so!

I sell on Vinted and eBay.

I trawl charity shops for designer items, they often underprice them so it's easy to make a profit if you have time, and my niche on eBay is rare videogames. People "having a clear out" often donate old games to charity shops having no idea what they're worth. Best find recently was an excellent condition copy of Clocktower on the PS1 which I bought for a tenner and sold for £400 on eBay.

Make an extra few hundred or so a month typically depending on what I manage to find.

Are you not worried about eBay and Vinted compulsory HMRC reporting of private sellers? I used to successfully sell unwanted stuff on eBay but temporarily stopped, as reached the limit after which you are reported.

No not really as I don't especially need the money, so when it stops it stops. I can always find something else to do to bring in extra fun money if I want to, and there are other avenues for selling stuff if I happen across a really good find.

GasPanic · 17/06/2024 11:45

From what I can tell for online selling it is approx. £1700 per calender year OR up to 30 items.

If you sell more than that your details will be given to HMRC by the platform. It isn't something that the platform gets a choice over from what I can tell.

LawlorsNaa · 17/06/2024 12:00

Babysitting. I work as a Nanny during the day and them do ad hoc babysitting when it suits. Next week I have a job for two days (not overnight) and will get 450 euros for 20 hours work.

Gettingbysomehow · 17/06/2024 12:05

Im a full time NHS podiatrist and I do some private work, affordable foot care for people who cant afford £50 just to have their nails cut. I do half a day at the weekend and might expand when I retire in a few years.

You can build a team if you want to, but you don't have to.

I used to do Body shop and Avon and this is far easier as it's stuff people need no matter how much of a recession there is.

I'm not going to tell you to 'PM me hun' or I'll get called all sorts 🤣
