Does this look like the start of shingles?

DD16 has felt absolutely exhausted the last week, put down to GCSEs. She felt generally a bit unwell yesterday and went to work, came home and out herself to bed and slept for 4 hours

This morning she's woken up with this very itchy rash. Just on the left side of her neck/chest and nowhere else

stress and poor diet can trigger if latent

but doesn’t look like shingles to me in any event

Shingles doesn't cross the midline and usually follows a single line or very narrow band of blisters. That rash does look as if it does cross the midline of the throat/upper chest. It could still be a viral rash, or something else. Shingles isn't normally itchy - the blisters tend to be very tender and painful to touch.

MollyRover · 16/06/2024 09:24

Is she having a reaction to her necklace?

zingally · 16/06/2024 09:33

Not really...

Shingles tend to form in a straight-ish vertical line down the back.

Could be something viral, or she's been bitten by some nasty little critter!

Oh how interesting. Her diet hasn't been the best these last few weeks during GCSEs!

Just going against the grain, I had shingles less than a year ago and it looked just like this. And you can get it absolutely anywhere. She should see a doctor as if caught quickly they can prescribe antivirals.

Yes this shingles doesn't always line up I think you should get her seen today I think but not positive that pharmacists can diagnose and prescribe antivirals

Chocolateteabag · 16/06/2024 09:59

I had shingles at 14 - started looking like that (sorry)

But could also be a stress reaction (does she spray perfume there?)

bettybadger · 16/06/2024 10:16

My DS had shingles recently. His rash was itchy rather than painful & he didn't feel particularly unwell with it, just a bit hot.
A pharmacist may be able to confirm, though ours wasn't sure & sent us to GP - they confirmed & prescribed antivirals.
Does the rash look like tiny blisters? DS rash was just on one side but not in a line - at worst point it spread from armpit to halfway down torso.
It's worth having it checked by a professional. Keep the rash covered in public till you know what it is.

AngelDelightButNotStrawberry · 16/06/2024 10:17

I’ve had shingles and it looked exactly like this, it doesn’t always follow a line.

Mabelface · 16/06/2024 10:26

Yup, looks like shingles. I'm the one in my family who gets asked this and so far, I've been 100% right!

There is also the possibility that it may be chickenpox if the rash starts to spread. You most definitely can catch it more than once.

Clarice99 · 16/06/2024 10:32

Another one going against the grain @Shinglessos I think it does look like shingles. DH had it recently, and his rash, at the beginning, looked just like the rash in your photos.

Do you have a local NHS walk in centre?

Yes mine looked very similar to this too, only on the side of my torso. Very itchy and sore at the start! Worth seeing a pharmacist maybe see what they think?

Tel12 · 16/06/2024 10:40

DH had shingles a couple of years ago. It initially looked a bit like nettle rash. The area was painful before the rash appeared. Your DD has age on her side so hopefully won't be too bad whatever the cause. Definitely up the fruit and veg. I'd phone 111, if it is shingles they can arrange for antivirals.

Fullofconfusion · 16/06/2024 10:42

When I had shingles the area felt sore for the first 24 hours, like achey muscles type feeling. Then a rash came up although mine was the typical in a line and quite red. The blisters didn’t appear for another 24 hours.

I think everyone is different.

pharmacists can now diagnose and give medication for shingles I think (please someone correct me if I’m wrong). I had to go to the GP as I was pregnant so pharmacist wouldn’t have been able to help in my situation.

Mine was excruciatingly painful so I hope for her sake it isn’t.

Mrsredlipstick · 16/06/2024 10:43

It does look like shingles. I carry the virus so cannot be vaccinated. Stress brings it on. No mixing with pregnant ladies if they haven't had chicken pox. It can effect the eyes. Be vigilant for that as it's very serious.
Try the pharmacy, it clears up quickly.
Just out of intetest does your daughter have warts? It's the same virus. I had them in my youth.

beetr00 · 16/06/2024 10:52

Folliculitis @Shinglessos?

Does she carry a bag over that shoulder?

Bellyfullofbiscuits · 16/06/2024 12:16

A pharmacist would be to diagnose.

Sandwichgen · 16/06/2024 12:53

I think it’s shingles

Cocolapew · 16/06/2024 12:58

Yes, looks exactly like mine when I had them.

RagzRebooted · 16/06/2024 13:02

I think it does look like shingles. Some pharmacies can treat that now, but you'd need to book in via 111 online to find somewhere on a Sunday I think. Not sure they do under 18s.
The sooner you start antivirals the better though, so get checked today if possible.
