Nice

Sadly, not the city in the South of France, but the use of the word:
I'll make a nice cup of tea/cake
Have yourself a nice sit down
I was wearing a nice blouse

No-one is going to say "i'll make you a horrid cup of tea, or admit to wearing an ugly top, so why use it?
Habit?
Just something we say without even registering that we say it?

Answers on a (nice!) postcard please!

Force of habit (annoys me intensely though especially about the tea)

ThunderQween · 16/06/2024 08:24

It's cos a cup of tea is nice. Not coz you'll have a nice version of it

PithyLion · 16/06/2024 08:25

its fine, it is part of the language, it tells you about the tone and mood of the message. I can't see an issue

Lurkingandlearning · 16/06/2024 08:30

Interesting. I think it describes how the person feels about the tea, the top etc.

A cup of tea can be meh, but a nice cup of tea, to me involves taking time and relaxing with it. A nice top is different to other tops because it makes me feel good when I wear it.

Perhaps, for me “nice” is shorthand for those feelings

LakeTiticaca · 16/06/2024 08:33

A cup of tea is nice
A sit down is nice after a long walk
A nice blouse makes you feel good
That is all.
As you were.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 16/06/2024 08:38

There's nothing wrong with nice.

A really nice person
I really nice experience

Both things I'd say would make someone feel warm, fulfilled and happy.

It's different to amazing. That's something that would blow your socks off and leave you feeling quite overwhelmed with joy.

An amazing meal cooked my a Michelin starred chef.
My experience watching the Northen Lights was simply amazing.

Amazing doesn't happen as much as nice.

Both are good. Neither are bland or meh.

Nice is a perfectly serviceable word that absolutely has its place in our language and vocabulary.

Not raised as an issue, this is chat not aibu (!), rather curiosity as to why it is such an ubiquitous word!

Also see lovely.

Lovely cup of tea
Lovely sit down
Lovely blouse

Or you could also use the word smashing.

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 16/06/2024 08:41

On a slightly related topic, are Nice biscuits "Nice" as in the French city or "Nice" as in something lovely?

Just to clarify, this is not an aibu post! Curious is all!
But what if you announce you're going to make a nice cup of tea and it isn't?!

Summerfreezemakesmedrinkwine · 16/06/2024 08:43

Do you want a cup of tea? - Functional

Would you like a nice cup of tea? - It looks like you need some company or comfort, but let's call it tea.

Scousemousey · 16/06/2024 08:44

They're like comfort words aren't they.
I'm sitting in the kitchen with a nice cup of tea and the peace and quiet is lovely.

PS. Nice in France - not all that nice.

pictoosh · 16/06/2024 08:48

It's a basic expression of comfort and enjoyment at the thought.
We are expressive creatures, what's wrong with it?

pictoosh · 16/06/2024 08:49

Just something we say without even registering that we say it?

Well yes, for the most part.

ReplenishMyCoffee · 16/06/2024 08:50

Reminds me of one of my favourite books

Nice
Scousemousey · 16/06/2024 08:51

Ha ha. And biscuits generally. Biscuits are really really really nice!

PS. Nice in France - not all that nice.

I vehemently and fundamentally disagree!! I love it, along with all the medieval towns along that coast and inland
YABU!

I suppose my opinion is coloured by the experience of being mugged there and the attitude of the police. 🤷
Other lovely French places are available.

I concur. It is one of my Mum's favourite places and she's often hard to please.

So sorry to hear that, scouse Flowers

AmelieTaylor · 16/06/2024 09:03

Our language is full of daft 'fillers' that actually make NO sense. If someone asks if I'd like 'A nice cup of tea'. I'm very tempted to say 'No, I'd prefer a horrible one please' 🤣🤣

but I mostly manage to control my urge 🤣🤣& I'm JUST as guilty!! I'll go for a nice hot shower!
