Cow rammed by police

I am absolutely gobsmacked by this - Surrey Police ramming an escaped cow to the ground and then trapping it under their car - what in the name of actual fuck were they thinking? It looks to be a young cow too. Just horrifying. (The video is distressing so watch with caution)

You’re right, they should have let it cause a fatal traffic collision instead.

LadyWiddiothethird · 16/06/2024 15:38

@Onceinawhilesaidi What an idiotic comment! How would that have happened when other police officers had shut the road?apparently they were shocked at what their colleagues did!

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 16/06/2024 15:39

What was required was a cowboy with a lasso!

AhBiscuits · 16/06/2024 15:44

It was a fucking calf and not a danger. I grew up on a small holding and we raised plenty of cows over the years. Shooting it would have been 100% better if they really had to take it down.

This is just silly - livestock are moved around on roads all the time in the countryside - twice daily if it's a milking herd. The only fatal collisions occur if drivers drive like morons.

Marrta · 16/06/2024 15:58

I agree with pp that people that eat them have no high ground here but yes that was a shame for the little cow

Pippippip2024 · 16/06/2024 16:00

Cows are actually one of the most dangerous animals in Britain!

This is mostly down to mother's with calves though isn't it? Not the calves themselves?

Did you see it? It was a baby.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 16/06/2024 16:25

Will there be an investigation of the footage before this ( there will be camera evidence either Police / DashCam or Ring ) where they are claiming this cow/calf damaged cars and was in a dangerous situation?

That will show a lot of what went on before .

What speed were they doing in order to hit this animal and send it tumbling so far down the road - you can see it beside a car , there's a large space then another car and it rolls beyond this .
That is a hell of an impact .

bengalcat · 16/06/2024 16:29

BBC says it was 10mins his old and called Beau Lucy - how sweet

Pippippip2024 · 16/06/2024 16:31

I’m sad for little cow. Hope it’s ok! But I wonder what led the police to to that.

Idiots. It's really not that difficult to round up cattle. I have previously herded cattle off the A52 on my way to work. I stopped all the traffic, got out my car, shoed them back in the field they had got out from and tied up the gate with twine. Interestingly no one else got out of their cars to help me. The man behind me apologised and said he was scared of cows! I'm not a farmer btw and I was wearing a smart dress and boots at the time.

Town speed limits are 30mph unless your driving a toy car that's a whoops sorry here's my insurance details crash!!

Lopine · 16/06/2024 21:47

So cruel and lacking in common sense.

I read that the incident had been going on for some time before the collision. Had the police tried to contact anyone with cattle expertise? RSPCA inspector, vet, farmer?

TryingToSeeTheFunnySide · 16/06/2024 22:01

I'm so upset about this. The poor poor creature 😔
I grew up in a rural area, and it wasn't uncommon to encounter cows, and other farm animals, who'd strayed from the herd, and were wandering lost in the road. We'd just get out and herd them back into the field. No biggie. They're gentle beasts mostly.
Apparently this poor creature was running up to people, probably asking for help.
I despair at humanity sometimes. I really do.

SerendipityJane · 16/06/2024 22:04

I despair at humanity sometimes. I really do.

Not all humanity, surely ? Just thick lazy police offices.

I see the driver has been removed from duty. Which is only proper if they acted alone. However, if it turns out they were following instructions ...

Unless "just obeying orders" is now a defence ?

Labtastic · 16/06/2024 22:17

"Efforts were made to contact local vets without success"

Sorry, this just screams absolute bollocks to me. I have never, ever contacted a vet out of hours and not been directed to the on-call vet. There is always 24 hour cover for vets. Any animal owner will know this statement of theirs can't be true. Some serious incompetence is being covered up.

Also "efforts made to identify the owner". The calf was just trotting around. Anyone that got close enough would have been able to see her ear tags, and the owner could have immediately been identified. God, this has made me so furious!
