Cow rammed by police

I am absolutely gobsmacked by this - Surrey Police ramming an escaped cow to the ground and then trapping it under their car - what in the name of actual fuck were they thinking? It looks to be a young cow too. Just horrifying. (The video is distressing so watch with caution)

A bloody big dog is more dangerous. Calves don't bite. And they're pretty easy to calm down with food generally.

I was never particularly a fan of the police, now I genuinely hate them. I'm sorry if there are any serving police officers on here, but this is the last straw for me, and you're not going to win back my respect and trust at all easily.

The animal was frightened and confused, and the police decided in their desperation infinite wisdom to ram it and pin it under their car?! Sorry, no. Just no. It's a waste of taxpayer money to even run this through the IOPC, just sack them and bar them from reapplying.

ONE policeman did this, and lets hope he is prosecuted

The driver isn't necessarily the one making the decision on what to do tbf! If it's been going on for several hours, it's likely a decision being forced by superiors

And every last person involved should be held to account

I presume the police carry nuts and a harness

The outer Met boroughs have a grab bag for loose horses with a head collar or two plus a small amount of nuts . There’s not enough room for everything though , it’s bad enough trying to fit in the defibrillator , first aid kits , cones, bomb kit and shields into an Astra.

And FWIW , there are plenty of officers who are appalled by this . I would NEVER have done this . Never .

are you a police officer? If so thankyou for the job you do, and also can you give us any reassurance that these people who did this will be held to account? Thank you

plominoagain · 15/06/2024 21:14

I am , yes .

They’re not my force , so I don’t honestly know , but they would be if they were in mine, despite the opinion most have of us. I would like to think so, because in my opinion I don’t believe this to be either proportionate or necessary . We would never have dealt with it like this .

Time was off the essence what would you of done that cow could of bolted at any moment into causing a serious accident

I doubt the cow would of listened if you asked it to wait for a vet or farmer to arrive

do you have any idea how dangerous an out of control wild animal can be cows have crushed and killed people

Edited

They didn't just roll up and hit it with the car , they'd been trying to catch it for hours apparently

It wasn't bolting anywhere was it? They'd blocked it in

Labtastic · 15/06/2024 21:17

As a mood lightener, this made me laugh. Just as a response to the people implying a lone calf trotting down the street might have killed someone.

Unspeakably cruel.

Labtastic · 15/06/2024 21:23

No one is suggesting that the cow should have been allowed to live a new life on the streets of London. There's just a wide chasm between "catch the cow, with the help of people who know how to catch a cow, that you've had hours to contact and, "mow the cow down and pin it under the wheels of a large car." Let's be reasonable about this.

Thank you. I know that like you, there will be plenty of Officers who can’t stomach this and would never dream of doing it. My husband is job and if he was in any way supportive of this I would be questioning the future of our marriage.

Absolute shocking decision from the police today but fucking hell- that's such an extreme statement. Please never ring them when in need because if they're that bad, you won't ever want them to come to your aid will you.

From what I keep seeing of them lately, you’re right I wouldn’t.

Onabench · 15/06/2024 21:48

If anyone hasn't watch the video, I don't recommend it. It is brutal, that poor animal. There must have been better ways to deal with this, other methods.....I can't even imagine deciding on this course of action, even as a last resort

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 15/06/2024 21:49

My solution would have been: look around for a nice grassy garden with secure fence. Knock on door and ask owner’s permission. (Repeat if necessary). Calmly herd cow into garden. Shut gate. Call vet.

user1471556818 · 15/06/2024 21:52

Absolutely disgusting behaviour to think that was the best solution beggers belief .
I really hope they are dismissed

PithyLion · 15/06/2024 22:12

I did try and catch a runaway sheep recently. It was tricky and I have no real knowledge or experience. But two of us managed to gently chivvy it into a safe area and contain it.

IClaudine · 15/06/2024 22:54

Even James Cleverly has condemned this. First time I have agreed with him.

DBSFstupid · 15/06/2024 23:17

FFS. Couldn't they have tranquillsed it instead.

Willmafrockfit · 16/06/2024 05:31

such an awful thing to do

SerendipityJane · 16/06/2024 08:49

The best use of police resources and training in this situation is the bleeding obvious "go and fetch a farmer and get him here on blues & twos". But even then I can't see the urgency.

I live in a suburb of Birmingham, and there are at least 3 farms I know of within 15 minutes drive,

LynetteScavo · 16/06/2024 09:37

It's such an illogical way to deal with the situation! What was this police officer thinking?

ThisWittyLurker · 16/06/2024 09:59

Disgusting I pray you loose your job

Willmafrockfit · 16/06/2024 10:45

they must have been very Townies inexperienced in the matter of farm animals.
many of us would not know what to do but the obvious solution is Call a Farmer, or a Vet.

who are you talking to?

F0XES · 16/06/2024 10:52

Cows wander around the streets of Mumbai and Delhi quite happily not causing trouble!
