So they want to replace PIP/DLA money with vouchers?

I don't understand it. It is really worrying me.

This payment helps pay for so many things. I doubt these vouchers would cover that, or give the freedom to shop or buy from where you want or need to.

I included DLA because it's really just the child's version of PIP. Eventually, my profoundly disabled child will be an adult and will have to be on PIP

Is there really any truth in this? I can't see any articles directly quoting Labour or Conservative. I might just be in such a worry that I have missed that bit

Apologies if there is another thread on this too. I am happy to get this one taken off if that's the case

Must say I'm quite surprised at the posters who have said about alcoholics being awarded PIP for their condition. My friend's brother is an alcoholic and has applied for PIP twice in the last 12 years and been turned down flat both times.

Jess, at the moment it is a question being asked in a review of PIP. It will be years before the review is completed and likely under a labour govt. it won’t happen. Please don’t spare it another thought.

This is good advice, @Jess199512 .

There is a consultation running, and if you feel up to it you could complete it in your personal capacity. If you can't face it, don't worry because plenty of people, organisations and charities who know the system inside out are completing it on behalf of all of us.

Kandalama · 16/06/2024 22:02

IClaudine · 16/06/2024 13:04

Luckily the Tories won't get in, so the vouchers idea is academic. Labour's manifesto mentions nothing about PIP reform, although they will look at ESA.

The consultation finishes 5 days after the GE.
Labour will not put a halt on it and have said they will review it and are not prepared to make any decisions on PIP before the election.

So the current review is ongoing and recommendations will be considered by ‘whoever’ once it’s complete. No party is ruling out reform.

So they want to replace PIP/DLA money with vouchers?

I don't trust a Labour govt any more than I trust a Tory govt. Both sets are career politicians with their snouts in the troughs.

@BusyMummy001 the actual review will not take years it will be complete in the first week of our next Parliament.

After which recommendations considered

No, the consultation will close a week into the next Parliament. It will take a while to review the responses after that.

Yep, my friend's son is an alcoholic too, and has also been turned down. He is also in the LCW group of UC, so no extra money and has to go on courses.
He is steaming drunk most of the time, and horribly abusive to his family so I have no idea how that decision was reached. He went to a job interview with vomit down his suit.

XenoBitch · 16/06/2024 22:17

It is worrying, but I don't think it will happen. The admin involved would be ridiculous for starters.

That’s basically what I said although I said 5 days after the GE in my first post above which is wrong
it’s 5 days after next Parliament starts, as I said in the first week of our next Parliament…..
Then it’s reviewed.
Based on previous consultations over the years in this area it looks like it could take a year to make any changes deemed necessary.

See Govn website re Green Paper consultation which indicates examples

That's never stopped the DWP from creating crazy admin for AFW.

I am going to stick my neck out here.

A Labour government may reform PIP (although their manifesto concentrates on reforming ESA and the WCA and doesn't mention PIP) but I honestly don't think it would go down the vouchers route. Plus Labour is not intending to cut disability benefits by £12 bn as set out in the Tory manifesto.

We shall see! I do have hope that Labour will not be as wantonly cruel as the Tories.

ETA: Access for work?

Reforming ESA and the WCA is also very anxiety inducing too.
I think Rishi was on about scrapping the WCA altogether and the only people who could claim the new "health element" of UC would be people on PIP. Which is nuts, as many people use PIP to be able to work. And a lot of people on LCWA do not claim PIP... for various reasons.

It is a scary time to be sick/disabled right now.

echt · 16/06/2024 22:55

I'm in Australia, and cashless welfare cards have been used in the past for indigenous Australians and also suggested for recipients of the State Pension. A cashless welfare card was also trialled for some on Centrelink benefits to curb spending on alcohol /drugs/gambling.

A complete denial of autonomy and always instigated by right-wing shits.

All of these are in the bin now, but you get the idea - recipients of benefits aren't to be trusted.

Maybe MPs shoud be paid in vouchers to make sure they don't spend their wages on fags, booze and sex workers?

So are all civil servants.
Or should we ban doctors, nurses and teachers for example from fags, booze and sex workers…🤣🤣🤣 Good Luck with that !

But let’s start with chocolate 🍫

Their expenses should be. And their second home should be halls / HMO like students live in

LadyKenya · 17/06/2024 09:59

Hopefully any overhaul for the PIP, will contain some semblance of common sense. The claimants with life long, progressive conditions etc, should not have to run the gauntlet of constant reviews. It is costly, and in so many cases, completely unnecessary. I know that Gps are already overworked, but surely their input would be more beneficial than having an assessor who knows nothing about the person sat in front of them. That should reduce the number of people who have to go to the tribunal, I would have thought.

As Labour have said they will review the consultation if/ when they are in power no one can say with such certainty it won’t happen.
Unless you are Kier Starmer and you’ve already seen the results which havent been finished yet.

Giving vouchers to disabled or ill people will never happen because .disabled and ill people have different needs because well they are people. There will never be vouchers in place of cash ever.

pointythings · 17/06/2024 12:07

@Kandalama I have more faith in Labour than in the Tories to reform PIP in a way that is helpful and effective rather than punitive. Vouchers are demeaning, punitive and will cost more rather than deliver savings.
