Anyone know if I can have 2 current accounts?

moneyinthebinthatsmrtim · 14/06/2024 18:33

With a different Bank?

I'd like a separate bank account with a card I can use for disposable spends

I currently bank with Halifax and have a savings account and current account

I'd like a debit card I can use that's with a different bank

Is this possible or is it classed as switching? Feel embarrassed to ask but I am confused because NatWest for example talk about 'switching'

Which I don't want

Yes I have multiple, with different banks.

Just make sure you’re not doubling up
paying fees for things - you don’t need multiple with travel insurance included for example.

HouseofHolbein · 14/06/2024 18:35

I have a current account with nationwide and another with chase. Also opened one with starling but don't use that one.

Lifeinlists · 14/06/2024 18:35

Yes. You can have as many as you like as long as you can keep up with them.

Yes of course you can. I have 4 at the moment I think. What you may not qualify for is any opening perks, because they usually ask for it to be your main account and have a certain amount paid in each month and a certain number of DDs or SOs set up.

stalecrayon · 14/06/2024 18:36

Yes, we have several including one to take advantage of the cash back lots of banks give you to switch.

Sorry, but doesn't that mean you've then switched over your other account?

I thought switching meant going from one bank to the next and just banking with that bank

I have a savings account with someone else but that's just for savings

lol yes who would stop you?

Sprogonthetyne · 14/06/2024 18:38

It's fine to have two but the second one will probably need to be a basic account without minimum pay in

AmelieTaylor · 14/06/2024 18:38

Yeah, it's no problem at all, but SOME banks stipulate you must deposit x per month or have your wages deposited into it, so just watch what their rules are!

BeeCucumber · 14/06/2024 18:38

You may have as many bank accounts as your credit score will allow.

I have an account with Lloyds, Santander and Nationwide. I have a debit card for each one.

Inlimboin50s · 14/06/2024 18:41

I've had a current account with Halifax and Barclays for over twenty years and a debit card with each,so yes it's fine.

dementedpixie · 14/06/2024 18:42

I have a bank of Scotland one that was the first account I opened many many years ago. I also have a joint account with dh with Nationwide. I pay a small amount of money from Nationwide into my sole account every month and tell dh its my running away account 😆.

moneyinthebinthatsmrtim · 14/06/2024 18:42

Thank you

It's just a very basic current account I'm after for general spends, no overdraft needed or rewards account needed

I currently have a Halifax reward account and need to double check why I've got it!

Lots of people have Chase and Monzo accounts for this kind of thing.

Why would this be the case? I have 3 with different banks, none of them are “basic”

thelengthspeoplegoto · 14/06/2024 18:46

I have 2 current accounts with the same bank. Cards for both. I find it handy as I can see everything on one app.

HollywoodTease · 14/06/2024 18:46

Yep. I have banked with Santander for more years than I care to remember, but I opened a Monzo current account (with debit card) last month. It's mostly going to be used for holiday spends as there are no fees and a reasonable exchange rate on loads of currencies.

edwinbear · 14/06/2024 18:47

Absolutely! I have three - one with the bank I work for who pay my salary into it. I then transfer most of that into my main ‘bills’ current account where all my direct debits come out of. Then I have a third, which I transfer my monthly ‘spends’ into for my general fun stuff. Lunches, clothes, hair cuts etc. Works well for me.

Many have a minimum amount that needs to be paid in per month (usually required your wage to go in) or a minimum number of direct debts in order to qualify for certain perks like switching bonuses, reward points, better interest rates, travel insurance, linked savings etc. This is to try and make you use their accountas your main one. However banks also offer a 'basic' account without these qualifying criteria, which usually don't have the additional features. Banks are required to offer this so (almost) everyone can access a bank account, though many don't advertise them or will push the ones with additional features.

As the op probably only has one wage, they can only get it paid into one account (without the faff of moving money around every month), so it would be easiest if their extra account was one without the qualify criteria.

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 14/06/2024 21:28

Just open the account but don't do a switch.
I have 3, 2 of which I use.
It's always useful in the event of card failure/systems going down.

I have more than one current accounts and they don't expect me to pay my salary in, normal current accounts not basic ones

You can have as many as you can open OP, no one's keeping score

DPotter · 14/06/2024 21:32

I have 3 current accounts, 2 in one bank, 3rd in another plus our joint current account.

There were some some accounts a while back that required you to pay your salary into them, but there are plenty of others out there. I use a high st bank and an on line bank

BellyPork · 14/06/2024 21:58

Different bank accounts for different purposes:

Chase for best exchange rates whilst abroad
Monzo for connecting to business account
Mettle for free accounting software
Tandem for high interest saving
Capital on Tap for unlimited 1% cashback spending
Also a Nationwide account but their app is rubbish so it doesn't get used.

Agree with PP regarding redundancy in case of problems with a certain bank/app... And I always carry cash.

jernams · 14/06/2024 23:00

It will be fine. I have current accounts with: Co-op, Barclays, Nationwide, Santander, TSB, Monzo, Lloyd's, Metro. Probably a few more that I've forgotten. I have some savings accounts linked with some of these banks, plus other savings accounts as well.

They are all full accounts with debit cards. All very easy to open (some could be opened with ID verification online without sending or bringing ID to a branch). None of them have any conditions for minimum payments. Some of them are barely used, but all have at least a small amount of cash in there.

TokyoSushi · 14/06/2024 23:03

Yes, I have two, RBS for my 'proper' account and then Monzo for day to day spending, small amounts of savings for particular things etc.
