How do you save a table at breakfast? Row with other guest

So you're staying in a hotel with one other person, and breakfast is a buffet where you can choose your own table. How do you save your spot?

  • take turns going up to get food, so there's always someone at the table.
  • both go up together but leave some belongings there, like a jacket or sunglasses.
  • something else to indicate your presence (if so what?)

I had a pretty unpleasant encounter with a horrible man this morning over this, and am wondering who is in the wrong.

Leave your sunglasses if you're both away from the table.

We usually take it in turns

thistimelastweek · 14/06/2024 17:01

Leave belongings on the table.

SoulMole · 14/06/2024 17:01

Take it in turns

IncompleteSenten · 14/06/2024 17:01

It's probably clearer to take it in turns. Leaves no room for doubt.

LikeABondVillanDipshit · 14/06/2024 17:01

I’d probably have something on the table -jacket, glasses or whatever- or leave a person there, otherwise it’s just an empty table that anyone else could sit at. If someone else had sat there in our absence I would have just picked a different table rather than an argument.

Terrribletwos · 14/06/2024 17:01

You quickly go and get coffee and plonk it down with your bag and then go back to buffet.

Indigobird111 · 14/06/2024 17:01

Leave my bag or scarf over the chair, or a book or something on the table.

SisSuffragette · 14/06/2024 17:02

If there's 4 of us then two will go up at a time. If just 2 of us then we leave items on the table

cansu · 14/06/2024 17:02

I would leave aomething on table and go get juice. Put that down and then wandering over to buffet. It is then clear that table is already occupied.

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 14/06/2024 17:02

Either taking turns or leaving something like a jacket on the table should be fine.

I usually holiday solo so I always mark the table with something, much easier than having to decide where to sit once I’ve got my food.

bergamotorange · 14/06/2024 17:02

I'd take turns to avoid issues, but I wouldn't seat myself at any table that had a personal possession on it as that should be enough to indicate someone is sitting there.

No3387 · 14/06/2024 17:02

Leave stuff on the table

KennaThomas · 14/06/2024 17:03

Take it in turns to avoid any confusion

TitInATrance · 14/06/2024 17:03

Leave belongings on table as that’s what I do if on my own.

BigFatSoberLife · 14/06/2024 17:05

Leave stuff or a person at the table

nearlysummerhooray · 14/06/2024 17:06

Just don't all leave table at same time.

CheeseWisely · 14/06/2024 17:06

Leave something low value on the table, a book or a newspaper.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 14/06/2024 17:06

leave belongings an a drink, often a glass of water or juice

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 14/06/2024 17:07

Leave something at the table

HeddaGarbled · 14/06/2024 17:07

We always do the first one - take it in turns.

Fulshaw · 14/06/2024 17:07

Leaving something on the table should v be enough.

If you don’t have anything on you, then either take it in turns or go and get a juice or something to put on the table and go back for the rest.

Barleysugar86 · 14/06/2024 17:07

The table needs to be clearly being used- a single book might be easy to miss, either multiple items or a person.

PCcrisps · 14/06/2024 17:08

I was in a hotel on my own last week, so the challenge is even greater.

I got myself coffee before taking a table then put the coffee on "my" table while I went to get food.

Tara336 · 14/06/2024 17:08

We take turns
