Things that made you realise you’re a grown up now

I was watching Geek Girl on Netflix and found myself really identifying with the parents (not least because they’re played by Tim Downie and Jemima Rooper, who were in loads of stuff on TV when I was growing up in the 90’s).

The parents are easily my favourite characters. They look fun.

A few days later I clicked on a targeted ad on Instagram for a dress I really liked. It turned out to be Monsoon - a brand I’d always thought was a bit too grown up for me. I used to look at their clothes and think "ooh, mum would look lovely in that". Looking through the website now and I realise could happily spend hundreds of pounds in there! 😆

It hit me – I’m properly a grown up now.

What made you realise?

(Just a bit of fun!)

still waiting for it to happen - although there is a book on the shelf I skipped over recently, as my Dad told me it wasn't suitable until I was an adult - then I thought, hang on! I can read this! I'm nearly 60! ( and yes it did find it quite a difficult read... so maybe I am still not adult enough yet)

My tax bill Envy

The plot of Dirty Dancing seen from the perspective of a mother with a teenage daughter.

Seeing young people out and about, and thinking 'gosh they must be cold with no coat on.'

Buying shoes primarily for comfort, although luckily DMs fit that brief.

Big pants.

Buying a bird table, and now feeling responsible for feeding the entire bird population in the area.

I walked through M&S to get some stuff from the foodhall and thought a top looked nice - I always thought M&S was for old people, turns out I'm now that target market 😂

When DP recently asked me what I want for my birthday… and I said a dressing gown, some big knickers, a basic t-shirt bra and some socks 🙈

Yep this is me!
I also love a potter around a big garden centre.

100% yes to seeing young people and thinking bloody hell put a coat on 🤣
Also when I hear teenagers speak using slang and I haven't got a fucking clue what they're on about 🤣🤣🤣

Slugsandsnailsresidehere · 12/06/2024 14:46

Worrying about the 3Ps: potholes, politics and buying a pension! 😆

Now that I think about it, there has been a growing irritation with young-person-slang for a while now... Lowkey this and Highkey that... calling everyone y'all on social media (though mercifully never in person) even though you're from Birmingham...

Reminds me of when my parents used to tell me off for saying "like" too much.

Oh dear😂

When I realised I hardly knew any recent music and my playlist could have come straight from the 90s even though it was around 2015. Since then I’ve been making an effort to listen to the new releases playlists on Spotify.

As an aside, how amazed would we have been to have Spotify in the 90s? Any music you want, from almost any artist and you can listen to it anywhere!

Oh god pmsl at that😆 I'm from Birmingham and my niece's and nephews do the social media thing and I just really don't get it. Especially the girls puckering their lips trying to look all pouty 🤣🤣🤣🤣

My mum doesn't tell me off if I swear anymore 😂

Omg my mum actually swore in front of me a few months back and I was so shocked!! I mean it was very mild in the grand scheme of things, but still. Wash your mouth out, mother!!

Singing birth certificates for both my children, bills with my name on and weirdly when someone asks me permission for something. I.e can your DS have x ? Or a letter with ‘to the parent or carer of X child’ and I’m still a bit .. oh that’s me! 😂

Oh well I must not be a full adult yet, my dad still tells me off for swearing 🤣 I mean I'm 38fgs!

Having more alcohol in the house than I intend to consume today.

changeison · 12/06/2024 15:27

loving everything in M&S.
Buying underwear and shoes for comfort first, fashion next.
saying no to people and not caring if they like me or not.

Light answer: realising I enjoy hill walking and Radio 4 and that most modern music is ‘just noise’.

More serious answer: losing my parents. That made me feel like a grown-up like nothing else.

VanillaSpiceCandle · 12/06/2024 15:38

Being a parent.

Wearing big mum knickers.

Having to help my parents and in laws with every day things like bills, appointments etc.

CirreltheSquirrel · 12/06/2024 15:57

I was thinking about some of the things I used to do with my mum when I was in my early 20s. I then realised she was the same age I am now.

BashfulClam · 12/06/2024 16:01

I dress for comfort, not style now, when I know it’s going to be sunny I plan which washing I’ll get hung outside and am actually excited about it. We came home from a 3 night break yesterday and I emptied the case and bags straight away and got the washing machine started…i used to think only crazy people did that.

Chypre · 12/06/2024 16:08

Calling my Dad on his birthday, despite me being very cross/disappointed. Coming up with kind words and warmth instead of sulking suddenly felt very "adult", I've felt WISE. Much more adult than council tax and remortgaging make me feel.

Begaydocrime94 · 12/06/2024 16:17

Setting up a business, buying a house with my partner, getting pregnant again. When my first child was born I was barely 22 and no idea how the world worked, it’s taken 6-7 years to get to this stage where I feel like an actual grown up. I also found my first grey hair a couple of weeks ago!
also, not as exciting but the feeling of being ground down makes me feel like a grown up. Years of work and trying to raise a child at the same time has just ground me down tbh. Trying to regain that spark but it’s hard when I’m pregnant, exhausted, work full time and trying to find time to cook tea, tidy the house, help with homework, exercise. It’s relentless and makes me feel a million miles away from being young and carefree lol

TealDog · 12/06/2024 16:25

Was at DS’s friends birthday party and one of the parents referred to DH and I as “DS’s mum and dad”. It made me feel really old.
