Things that made you realise you’re a grown up now

I was watching Geek Girl on Netflix and found myself really identifying with the parents (not least because they’re played by Tim Downie and Jemima Rooper, who were in loads of stuff on TV when I was growing up in the 90’s).

The parents are easily my favourite characters. They look fun.

A few days later I clicked on a targeted ad on Instagram for a dress I really liked. It turned out to be Monsoon - a brand I’d always thought was a bit too grown up for me. I used to look at their clothes and think "ooh, mum would look lovely in that". Looking through the website now and I realise could happily spend hundreds of pounds in there! 😆

It hit me – I’m properly a grown up now.

What made you realise?

(Just a bit of fun!)

I now understand how my pension works and how much I'm likely to get.

The plot of Dirty Dancing seen from the perspective of a mother with a teenage daughter.

Seeing young people out and about, and thinking 'gosh they must be cold with no coat on.'

Buying shoes primarily for comfort, although luckily DMs fit that brief.

Big pants.

Buying a bird table, and now feeling responsible for feeding the entire bird population in the area.

Have a teenage ds but I think pretty much almost every film we watched as kids in the 80s is questionable when viewed from a modern modern viewpoint - particularly looking at you, Pretty Woman and Big! I'm still an 80s film lover though!

Watching wrinkly, flabby, faded Maverick ... You as well eh Tom Cruise?

We were hot back then.

I’m always mystified when people take my advice or respect my opinion. What do I know?
I didn’t exactly intimidate a teacher but they were definitely on the back foot. Felt bad about it for ages.

I have the local council’s report an issue with the street / bin collection / drains / roads web page bookmarked in my phone 🙈

My parents dying.

Wondering aloud why The Young People don't seem to use umbrellas these days.

Sitting on a tiny little chair with my knees by my ears at parents evening

Realising we have a hedgehog in the garden resulted in a garden centre trip (adult in itself) to buy a house, feed and camera

I bought a chicken shape basket for my eggs because I hate them in a box and also a butter dish lol. Showed my sister who is older than me and she called me a granny 😂

Omg I am such a fan of a good butter dish!! I consider them an essential kitchen item but everyone else seems to think this is very eccentric of me. But I will not waver. Spreadable butter is necessary.

I lay in bed fantasising about some of the cashmere jumpers I saw in M&S...

And went online and bought them! This was yesterday and made me feel VERY grown up!

Parents/PIL asking for advice.

Things going wrong around the house and realising I'm the grown up that needs to decide what to do about it and do it.

Oh, and seeing a young chap (late teens/early 20s) a couple of years ago with stunning cheekbones, long hair, leather coat and trousers, lots of silver jewellery, massive New Rock boots... and very kind eyes. 20-25 years ago I'd have got off the bus at the next stop and gazed adoringly at him while trying to work up the courage to talk to him. Now? Aww, he looks like a nice young man under all that. I bet his parents are proud of him...

I remember watching House when it first came out and being fairly appalled at myself for finding Hugh Laurie (in character) slightly attractive. I mean, I loved the character but he was soooo old, like 40 odd, bleughhh, don't be ridiculous. I was about 18 at the time.

A few weeks back I was randomly flicking through box sets and came across House so I watched the first season. I realised that I'm now even more attracted to the character because he's in my age bracket now (in season 1), a totally dateable age for me at nearly 38 and I don't think he seems or looks old at all. I very definitely would, without hesitation 😯 😂

I have such a clear memory of how ancient and decrepit I thought he seemed when it premiered, it's a very odd feeling!

My friends are retiring 😩

I was browsing egg baskets on Amazon last night, trying to decide if I wanted a chicken or henhouse shaped holder. Good God 😂😂

I’m the only parent in my friendship group, one once found a lost child when we were at the park, they then delivered the lost child to me as they all considered me the responsible adult of the group. This also highlighted that none of us are on anyway adult like.

I was walking to the station as a newlywed one day, and thinking how I didn't feel grown up enough to be married... then realised that at work that day, I had a meeting with my department's secretary of state (I'm a civil servant), and suddenly thought 'oh, shit - that's actually quite grown up'

ElmTree22 · 13/06/2024 06:35

Having a window cleaner.

Favourite outing being the garden centre.

pinkgin79 · 13/06/2024 06:39

When I put up a Facebook post asking for recommendations for vacuum cleaners, dishwashers and washing machines!

Mines similar to OP, watching the reboot of Heartbreak High on Netflix. (Australian show for teens, first made in 1994). Loved the show but a different experience to watching it the first time - I related much more to the characters of the Principle, and a grandmother, than the teens.

abouttoturn50 · 13/06/2024 06:54

When the doctor told me she thought it was time to start HRT! 😫😫

I loved the original Heartbreak High. I thought they were all so unbelievably cool. Had a massive crush on Drazic, and wanted to be just like Jodie. Is the reboot any good? Is it totally new and just set in the same school, or is it actually based on the original? Nostalgia 😭

Catsmere · 13/06/2024 08:23

Learning to drive (never needed to in Melbourne).
Organising my mum going into care.
Living alone for the first time in my life. (Kitties excepted.)

It's really good I think! It's not the same characters, it's set in the same school, 30 years on. A few old characters even come back for small parts/cameos in season 1.
