Rishi Sunak went without Sky TV so his parents could send him to private school

Honestly this has really annoyed me, apart from the fact it's such crap - he came from a family where his parents were a GP and a pharmacist, it's like he's literally thought of the most working class stereotype and applied that. He's so out of touch and I don't know why this one has annoyed me so much but it really has.

I'm not much older than our prime minister and we didn't have one either, or holidays and not much in the way of any luxury items and guess what my parents couldn't afford to send me to private school despite them working very hard too.

He seems to get irritated by these questions, he would be better off saying ‘I was very privileged and didn’t go without much, however I am aware enough to know that I was very lucky and more fortunate than most. But I can still understand and speak for people because x’y’z.’

Rather than come up with some tripe to make him seem like ‘one of the people.’

I heard a preview of the interview he made this comment in this morning, and whilst I'm no fan of Rishi, he was pressed for examples of what luxuries his parents went without to fund his education. Tbf to him, if he thinks back to his 9yo self, how would he have known other than what was viewed as a luxury/important to him at the time? Context is everything, and I think he's being rinsed on this particular example unfairly.

Is that you Rishi?

number10bus · 12/06/2024 11:54

He's going the way of Ed Milliband in 2005, everything he does and says is ridiculed.

Maybe he needs to retire and get himself a podcast too. MPs always look so much happier once they're no longer in politics.

I’m starting to think he wants to lose his seat & have an excuse to jet off to the States. Nobody’s that inept, surely?!

Marchitectmummy · 12/06/2024 11:54

Its a sentiment that rings true with others though. No matter how wealthy you are, choosing to spend money in one place requires a sacrifice somewhere else, even if its saving more or upgrading holidays or whatever it is.

Is that you Rishi?

And he would have been media trained within an inch of his life to be able to answer this sort of question. No excuse.

A GP and a pharmacist would have been able to send their kids to private school in the 90s

One of the fanciest boarding schools?

Aguably one of the top 3 or 5 in the country (outside of London). equal to Harrow or Eton. Winchester also has a special arrangement with Oxford Uni written into its charter that guarantees 15 places at the Uni for pupils from Winchester

Alltheunreadbooks · 12/06/2024 12:00

He needs to stay off the campaign trail, he's an absolute disaster.

He has absolutely nothing in common with the general population of this country , he is so rich and privileged, which is fair enough but he obvioulsy hasn't even tried to understand how normal people live.

No problem with him being in the top 0.5% wealthiest people in the country, but you need to understand and empathise with ...or at least pretend to ..with those who are not.

This guy can't even do that.

I'm sorry, what?! How is that even allowed?

And is it still used..?

"Is this a channel you would let your wife or servants watch ?"

willWillSmithsmith · 12/06/2024 12:08

I didn’t realise having Sky TV costs multi-thousands of pounds a year, no wonder I don’t have it. What a sacrifice from Mr&Mrs Sunak 👏🏻👏🏻

Absolutely. He’ll be on a flight out of this country before you can say working class.

TheGhostILoveTheMost · 12/06/2024 12:10

I am the same age as him.
We were poor AF, we were a household of 10, both parents claiming benefits.
Guess what? We were one of the first in our street to have sky TV. Parents had fuck all and were terrible at budgeting. We were hungry, dirty but at least we had something to watch on telly to keep us entertained.

IClaudine · 12/06/2024 12:13

YellowHairband · 12/06/2024 11:17

He was a day student.

He gave the sky example when asked about being in touch with the "day to day struggles ordinary people face", and what he'd gone without in that context.

If his parents were scrimping to send him to school he could have surely come up with other examples. "Like many people in this country, my parents made financial decisions to provide my brother and me with the best education. We were fortunate that our financial situation was such that with some sacrifices, like not going on holiday (insert other relevant sacrifice here), they were able to afford a very good school. I'm aware of course that many other people make the same sacrifices and are still not able to afford the things that would give their children such advantages, and that for some people, the things I saw as a sacrifice are not even an option".

He wasn't a day student @YellowHairband . It is only in the sixth form that Winchester allows day students (and girls!) Even that is quite a recent change.

I’m getting so weirded out by this trope of Rishi being brought up with a silver spoon. Why is he being picked on for this? Don’t recall Cameron’s path upbringing being brought up. Any excuse
to berate a brown man.

I mean his parents were hardworking middle class professionals kicked out of East Africa, hardly the Rothschilds.

Imisscoffee2021 · 12/06/2024 12:14

It's this vile Tory idea that if you just work hard enough, pull your socks, you'd be well off too. Margaret Thatcher had a very similar ethos. Completely unable to see their own privilege. Obviously not every Tory voters and ever Tory politician does this but that is the prevailing attitude and it shows in their policies.

Elieza · 12/06/2024 12:15

@iclaudine No time travel involved 🤣

Ok it wasn't called sky tv in 1986 (possible 1987 I can't remember that far back definitely no later though as I moved away) it was some kind of satellite or cable tv or something but it's the same thing, pay for tv that was better than the four channels we in the 'posh' area had!

And they did have a tumble dryer for sure. Not sure about the dishwasher, but this appliances were available in the 1950s

TyotyaKlava · 12/06/2024 12:17

He sounds like Victoria Beckham who said that she came from a working class family whilst was driven to school on rolls Royce 😄 except for the fact that she doesn’t run a country like rishi does

CurlewKate · 12/06/2024 12:19

@Carota I have absolutely no problem with him being rich. I do have a problem with him pretending to have come from humble origins and making it through honest toil and sacrifice.

School was founded in 14th century(!!) as a feeder to New College Oxford and apparently it written into the charter. Obviously the pupils have to pass the interview but you know they will be schooled to do that. just as Eton always have a former master on the Board at Oxford. the fix was in 100s of years ago

this is a good read if you want to know more. but you'll either want to burn the places down or go without SKY tv to get your children in

Are you not old enough to remember the 2010 election?!

Social media wasn't as huge as it is now, but even so there was plenty of focus on his privilege and derision of his dire attempts to be one of the ordinary folk. Call me Dave. Hug a hoodie.

And then using that as a pretext to remove benefits and support so his mates can enjoy low taxes and private schools.

David Cameron is literally the grandchild of a baronet and son of a stockbroker. Rishi is getting more of a rinsing for growing up in the lap of luxury than he ever did. I’m sorry a doctor and pharmacist are hardly members of the global elite.

I wasn't allowed a ' girls world ' either along with Sindy or Barbie dolls.
I often think this is why I'm useless at doing my own hair or make up to this day :(
😂
( it was more cost than anything else , but my mum was suspicious of these 'modern dolls ' )
(What she'd have made of the Barbie film I've no idea.)

Girl's world came with the territory as mum was a hairdresser though she later encouraged us not to take that route (long hours, poor pay). DS has just decided he is into this, and found a brand new one in a charity shop the other day which was a coup as they are not cheap to buy.

I was allowed Sindy but not Barbie on the grounds that her feet were only designed for high heels and that she was extraordinarily well endowed (plastic surgery?). Without having to spell it out mum conveyed to us that she was not to be trusted and was a product of patriarchy.

Sindy was considered to be much more down to earth, as she could wear sensible flat shoes and had fairly modest breasts even if she did have a lift on the outside of her house and had a beach buggy and a horse and trap.

I didn't know you could still get Mr Frosty! I never had one and the trauma is still there beneath my outward success in life.

Puts on Christmas wishlist for DS/Self.
