Rishi Sunak went without Sky TV so his parents could send him to private school

Honestly this has really annoyed me, apart from the fact it's such crap - he came from a family where his parents were a GP and a pharmacist, it's like he's literally thought of the most working class stereotype and applied that. He's so out of touch and I don't know why this one has annoyed me so much but it really has.

I'm not much older than our prime minister and we didn't have one either, or holidays and not much in the way of any luxury items and guess what my parents couldn't afford to send me to private school despite them working very hard too.

The one person I knew whose son won an assisted place to an Independent school was most definitely not working class.

This didn't apply to Sunak though - his parents had done well for themselves and chose to educate their sons privately, but not daughter.

"He came from prep school with a thirst for knowledge, he studied PPE at Lincoln College that's where Sky, caught his eye"

I said, "Pretend you got no money."
And he just laughed and said, "Oh, you're so funny."
I said, "Yeah
Well, I can't see anyone else smiling in here,
Are you sure?"

That's interesting; I didn't know that they chose to privately educate the sons but not the daughter. It is very typical, traditionally, for Indian families to favour the sons. Destructive too.

Destructive ? Comes with the "Approved by Farage" stamp of approval.

I'm not clear what you mean here, @SerendipityJane

Not just Indian families - I know white families who have never lived anywhere else but England privately educating their son(s) but not the daughter(s). With the excuse that the local girls school is very good.

Yes I know a family with 2 sons and 2 daughters who sent the sons private. Girls went to good state schools, which begs the question of why if they were in the catchment of a good state school why all of them didn't go State and share the money out fir extra curricular etc for all kids. Similarly Sunaks parents. They could have sent all 3 to a cheaper private school but chose one of the most expensive schools in the country.

The interviewer asked a very important question. As someone richer than the king how does he keep in touch with the problems that people face.

HE said then about the sacrifices his parents made. The interviewer then didn’t let him just fudge that and pressed him to name the sacrifices. He could have said ‘we lived in a one bed flat’ or ‘we lived in corned beef hash’ but he couldn’t because they were wealthy. And he couldn’t name an actual sacrifice- Because it’s a LIE. He had a very privileged beginning.

Which is fine IF he’s got insight and he can competently do the job.

The only answer I would respect would be;

‘Do you know what, I’m very aware that my life has been extremely privileged compared with the vast majority of people in the world. I have been enormously blessed and I’m so grateful. I do worry that I won’t truly understand what it’s like to grow up in dire poverty and I can’t help that. What I can do is listen and learn as best I can. I want all children in this country to have …’

Honestly, it’s not rocket science. He’s an idiot if he doesn’t get that what he said was not only tone deaf but deeply hurtful and insulting to many. I don’t want that kind of idiot at the helm.

Agree. Carla Denyer of the Greens said 'I was lucky I had a comfortable childhood and didn't want for anything'. End of story. Same as most people.

Ghl · 13/06/2024 17:42

Have you seen how much private school is though? To be fair to him, they probably did go without luxuries to pay for private education. I bet the uniform alone was extortionate

Saw this today 😂

Rishi Sunak went without Sky TV so his parents could send him to private school
TinyTrue · 13/06/2024 17:51

Alot of children in this country are going with nutritious meals because processed food is so much cheaper, Many have never been out of the area in which they live for a holiday or day out. It's ridiculous that he thinks he could understand the world of poverty, drugs and crime like many teenagers will go through in this country to survive. He's pathetic and completely out of touch with the real world!

Alltheyearround · 13/06/2024 17:52

I took him to a supermarket,I don't know why but I had to start it somewhere

I suspect - unlike most of the UK - that has been doctored.

well he is hardly going to say that the real sacrifice was his sisters education. They could only afford to send two children to private school so they sent their sons.

They can’t be as rich as everyone is making out then, if they couldn’t send all their kids to private school

kenyaswhiterefrigerator · 13/06/2024 17:59

@SerendipityJane It's definitely real as my children go to school down the road and I see it when I drop them off occasionally. I think it may well have been a more recent addition though

Rishi married money, his family were not in the same bracket or even close. Arguably starmer’s family were wealthier, his father owned the factory.

sunak married into a very wealthy family indeed.

pinkyspromises · 13/06/2024 18:03

We didn’t have a sky dish in the 90s either

Mother couldn’t bear the look of them.

suspect that the Sunaks thought sky dishes were frightfully lower class

CptStonezy · 13/06/2024 18:03

And he also lied about it too

pinkyspromises · 13/06/2024 18:03

Yes but he went to Winchester

CptStonezy · 13/06/2024 18:04

He was born in 1980 - I’m not sure Sky was even around when he was a child, was it?

I was born 1977 but we had sky in by the time I went to high school. And I don’t think we were in the first batch of people getting it. My dad took some persuasion. But I don’t think sky was even that expensive back then. Certainly not the equivalent to private school. 🤦‍♀️

MeandT · 13/06/2024 18:15

Well not having a Sky subscription would cover about 1-2% of the annual fees for a school like Winchester, so where's the other 98% come from? Using own brand tomatoes?

FML this bloke is out of touch with reality.

YellowHairband · 12/06/2024 09:11

If Keir Starmer had said the same it would really annoy me too. It's so out of touch. If RS just owned the fact that he had parents who were able to afford to send him to public school it would neither surprise me or annoy me.

Yes - does he honestly think it would come across worse to just say "I'm fortunate enough that when I was growing up, we didn't have to go without. I want every child to have that sense of security that I had etc etc".

He has no political awareness.

Absolutely this. Where are the advisors?

asbestosmouth24 · 13/06/2024 18:18

I'm just slightly older than Rishi and from a working class family with very little money. We had Sky from 1990 as I remember people were given a free sky set up as a free trial. A relative signed up for this free trial knowing he was moving house soon. when he moved he installed the huge white Amstrad sky dish at my parents house for us. we had free sky tv for many years as back then you were able to buy dodgy viewing cards to put in the decoder box for £10 in the local pubs! these cards lasted years until sky became digital 😒🤣.Almost every family we knew at the time had sky this way. But we still didn't go to private school!
