Rishi Sunak went without Sky TV so his parents could send him to private school

Honestly this has really annoyed me, apart from the fact it's such crap - he came from a family where his parents were a GP and a pharmacist, it's like he's literally thought of the most working class stereotype and applied that. He's so out of touch and I don't know why this one has annoyed me so much but it really has.

I'm not much older than our prime minister and we didn't have one either, or holidays and not much in the way of any luxury items and guess what my parents couldn't afford to send me to private school despite them working very hard too.

Totally agree with the comments. I’m a couple of years older than him. I remember my best mate getting sky in 1991, she was the only person in our secondary school class with it. We were suddenly cool as we could watch mtv. People generally just didn’t have it. I personally didn’t get sky/virgin till 2002 when I was on maternity leave.

Rishi Sunak - man of the people. How tone deaf can you be?

This

He's like the gift that keeps on giving to Labour.

Everygrain · 12/06/2024 17:27

We had some sort of Sky in about 1989/1990, it was a large satellite dish which you had to point in the right direction as it often seemed to be a bit off direction, it was in the back garden on a wall at one stage, there weren't many channels so probably wasn't something children wished for.

Yes I think there was mtv and Eurosport, there wasn't much

Actually, I've found some old posts on Mumsnet from 2014 - confirming the school did have some day boys in the 1990s:

I have friends who were there 20 years ago who were day boys. It's not new I don't think.

I grew up in Winchester and WC always had a some day boys then - hadn't realised it had changed.

Interestingly in their girls admittance brochure it says they’ve had a ‘very small amount of day pupils for decades including the daughters of some dons’.

So, they were a strictly boys only boarding only school* that always had some day pupils and some girls… 😂😂

*according to the announcement about girls and day pupils.

Indeed. The result of a decade long plot to sink the Tory party by infiltrating it with thick posh twats and letting then do what thick posh twats do best.

Even now they can't see they've been well and truly stitched up. It's a thing of beauty.

This sums it up for me.

Rishi Sunak went without Sky TV so his parents could send him to private school
itsgettingweird · 12/06/2024 17:34

We didn't have sky.

Might have a lot to do with the fact that when we were young it wasn't even invented (I'm same age as Sunak) and then when it did come on the market media packages weren't really as much as a thing as they are now.

Not even in upper class households.

I wonder how many working class friends barrister Starmer and his privately educated wife have?

@vodkaredbullgirl
Not disagreeing with your sentiment but he would have been 7-8 when sky started and he would have been 13 when he went to Winchester.

Sky started in 1989 in the UK.
But many people opted for BSB maybe his parents had that.

Pedallleur · 12/06/2024 15:35

think it was 2. the sister had to slum it. But fees were 12k apparently so 24k if the boys crossed over. Doable then with 2 x professional salaries coming in

Do we know what school the sister went to? Winchester was boys only then.

Abitboring · 12/06/2024 17:40

I bet they didn't eat avocado on toast either.

But that isn't the point. You can be rich and well connected and still understand or at least try to understand how ordinary people live and the challenges they face. And you can show that in the policies you put forward.

@Clavinova desperately clutching at straws.

Walkaround · 12/06/2024 17:42

Since I suspect his parents wouldn’t have approved of Sky TV in any event, I doubt they would have paid to get it regardless of the size of their income.

MyQuaintDog · 12/06/2024 17:44

@Clavinova can you link those old posts you found?

Different generation, but reminds me of my parents complaining that they went without a honeymoon so that they could afford to buy a house, aged 22! No idea of the relative cost of things, and no idea how privileged they were compared to people who will never own a house (or go to private school).

True but to be fair - many people refuse to compromise on these things (e.g. expensive wedding and honeymoon) when it can all add up to a deposit in some cases (Not at 22 to be fair but I bet they had contemporaries who did the lavish honeymoons and complained about not being able to get on the housing ladder)

Not that we should all be sacrificing endlessly but sometimes (and these days many times), it is very much required for most people

Luddite26 · 12/06/2024 17:45

I worked in a restaurant in 1989 and Avocados were big on the men.
Avocado prawns, avocado smoked salmon, avocado cream cheese, avocado caviar, then when they were too ripe we made guacamole! But I bet Rishi didn't have them.

Haha

von1471 · 12/06/2024 17:46

The overall problem is that most MP’s are out of touch with working class people, and when I say working class I include all those who are solely reliant on their earnings to be able to live from day to day.

MyQuaintDog · 12/06/2024 17:47

It as if Sunak is trying deliberately to lose the election.

Don't make it worse Clav - best to get the grieving and then anger over as quickly as you can. But don't worry from the ashes of the Tory Party can come the dawning of a new day of Reform ! Sir Beer Korma even bought a donkey sanctuary for his mother. The bastard.

From your lame comment it appear that even you have given up. You are not alone. She works for the NHS by the way and Keir was the finest barrister of his generation who wants to try and heal the country that your beloved party has nearly destroyed. He even got to get his BLM taking the knee virtue signalling in when he crashed the Palace. Bastard again !

Oh yes;
Keir Starmer promises to curb the number of people “languishing” on benefits and make work pay

MyQuaintDog · 12/06/2024 17:52

@Clavinova The issue is not whether the Tories will lose the election - they will? The issue is whether there will be a credible party at the end of this. Farage's Reform Party is trying to become the main opposition party, and they might succeed.
