Blimey! John Lewis , what happened?

I had to return an item today. I was one day over the 30 days, a telling off from the assistant who said " On this occasion I'll allow it".
The cafe! 6 people doing nothing, chatting, one poor woman collecting trays and washing up. I ordered 2 things, they were wrong. The tray was wet, the knife was dirty.
I have every sympathy for people on their feet all day btw.

@TheYearOfSmallThings sometimes it's pretty unavoidable though - he took a call he needed to take -

I am perfectly tolerant of others having loud chats to each other often in large groups or kids running round-

I wasn't aware that cafes needed to be silent these days.

ssd · 13/06/2024 12:59

Im not sure actually. But i used to work in Debenhams and the stylists there had sales targets to reach every month, i think they got a bonus if they exceeded them. Im guessing jl will be similar.

ssd · 13/06/2024 13:15

I can imagine jl stylists are very well trained and are very professional right enough. But its normal for sales staff to have targets in retail.

Oh and a very rude woman with a face like sour piss in her early 70s reading the Mail - has just had a go at my husband saying she really doesn't want to listen to his phone call (work)? (And about 3 minutes) Guess we know how she is voting.

I admire her 🙌

wheresthebigcarrot · 13/06/2024 13:18

@CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment we know this for sure.

Chewbecca · 13/06/2024 13:19

I'm with you OP. John Lewis used to be all about a customer service experience, you paid a little more but were treated like a valued customer. If they lose that, they lose one of their USPs and therefore sales may reduce.

Blackcats7 · 13/06/2024 13:31

John Lewis have massively lost their way. Publishing their “Identity” magazine promoting staff members sexuality and fetishes showed that.
A bloke in a harness who was clearly very sharp tongued from their own description is supposed to be telling customers how to parent their children.
I stopped shopping with them after that nonsense. Let’s hope the new boss improves things.

Unavoidable? Fine. But no, I don't enjoy listening to loud work conversations, and men having work conversations tend to boom at each other.

Why would anyone want to hear that?

yumyumyumy · 13/06/2024 10:46

I actually think it's quite rude to take work calls/meetings in cafes. But she was pretty rude too.

Does sound like that poster's DH has a soulmate in his wife, though, if we're talking rude. Not to mention ageist and misogynist.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 13/06/2024 13:39

And good for that woman. I've told people to shut up (on trains though) and I'm prepared to do it in future.

(Seventy next month and Mail reader. No idea if I have a face like sour piss, but RBF definitely).

TheYearOfSmallThings · 13/06/2024 13:40

And petulant.

OK Just to be clear here....the item was part of a spend via a personal shopper.
Due to the change in weather some of it proved unsuitable and therefore had to be returned. The PS assured me " don't worry if you go a few days over"
I have been polite and respectful through out. Sad state of affairs.

The PS assured me " don't worry if you go a few days over"

Course she did.

wheresthebigcarrot · 13/06/2024 14:28

@Blackcats7 utter bollocks.

What do you mean? Like I'm telling lies or something?

She actually said, heres your receipt. See how you feel at home with the items. If not, bring them back, you've got 30 days and if you go over come and see "one of us" . I assumed she was refering to the PS team.

So now apologise for your snide please. Thank You.

Britain's rubbish service is just a symptom of the country's bigger problem: it's gone to pot. The UK's lost its sense of decency, its intellectual edge, and its sense of style. Look no further than the headlines about Brits behaving badly abroad, drunk and fat or the thousands upon thousands of memes attacking the overprocessed style of the white British girls on Love Island. It's all part of a broader decline, driven by falling IQs and a collapse of social norms. The country's heading down the tubes.....

eggplant16 · 13/06/2024 16:52

Sense of decency, long gone. Was there ever much style? perhaps in the 50's.

I suppose IQ must be the same but kids worn down by death by powerpoint. No divergent thinking or critical analysis.

Maybe someone should
mention the very low salaries people in retail are earning these days. Not to mention that most JL partners have that superior attitude about themselves. And the the favouritism that goes on between management and some members of staff. No wonder the hard working people want nothing to do with it. They prefer to use temporary staff to keeping their own. I don’t work in retail but have a good friend who used to work for them until recently.

cassandre · 13/06/2024 17:03

Our local John Lewis is small but I've never had an issue there with bad service or lack of cleanliness. Lots of items aren't in stock in the store, but their click and collect service is quite efficient.

I order electrical items from John Lewis whenever possible because of the two-year warranty they offer. I had a printer that stopped working in the second year, and they offered me a choice of a refund or a replacement printer. I chose the replacement printer, and it had gone down in price since I originally bought it, so they refunded the price difference to my account! I went home with a new printer and £20 richer.

So my experience with them has been very positive. Too bad this isn't the case everywhere!

@Blackcats7 utter bollocks.

Bollocks that they did this or that it indicates a waste of money and lack of understanding of customer care as a priority?

Blackcats7 · 13/06/2024 17:16

eggplant16 · 13/06/2024 14:10

What a load of rot.

Whilst your argument is so wonderfully expressive as per one other poster please explain further. Are you saying it didn't happen or that spending money on this ridiculous piece of supposed virtue signalling doesn't reflect a diversion from customer care? I think the backlash at the time showed most customers did not appreciate this action.

eggplant16 · 13/06/2024 17:30

I'm saying , I think its nonsense.

I'm curious about @Blackcats7 question too. It definitely did happen.
