Smug milk.....who is it appealing to?

I saw this in my local Tesco. Cow's milk mixed with oat milk. I actually thought it was a vegan milk alternative as it was next to the Free From section.

I must be missing something, but who is buying this? Obviously if you're vegan or have a dairy intolerance you can't drink it, but if you're a dairy milk drinker what would be the appeal? I saw it was marketed as "30% less fat than semi skimmed milk" but it still has more fat than standard skimmed milk.

From the ingredients it's just semi skimmed milk with a bunch of random crap added to it and 1.5% oats. But I'm genuinely curious who their target audience are.

Try finding a dairy replacement that isn't fortified with calcium to the same level as moo juice..

I tried finding a low calcium dairy alternative a few years ago (calcium interferes with uptake of a medication I'm on) and gave up because they're all exactly the same in terms of minimum calcium content.

Organic products tend not to be fortified, so they might be your best bet.

BertieBotts · 11/06/2024 14:17

Maybe it's aimed at people who want to reduce their dairy intake but don't like the taste of oat milk.

I've seen similar with burgers - half meat, half pea protein. It's a strange concept TBH.

Do you think it was thought up by Apprentice candidates? A product with a terrible name and no obvious target market.

You can tell it's not done by Apprentice candidates because the branding isn't done in clashing colours with comic sans as the typeface

bakewellbride · 11/06/2024 15:04

It's an absolutely ridiculous and stupid product. I drink oat milk. Dh drinks cows milk. NEITHER of us want to go anywhere near this!

OneThreadOnly · 11/06/2024 15:20

I am lactose intolerant and prefer Oat milk to lacto free milk (its creamier), this is a very weird product.

Looking at their website it says you are reducing Carbon so can be smug about saving the planet..... I think there are lots of people who will fall for that kind of thing!

"By switching to Smug for just one year you can part of the our goal to help reduce Co2e emissions and empower you and others to live a more productive and healthy lifestyle"

I really, really don’t think there are. Anyone remotely climate conscious is far more likely to go for a proper plant milk. Something is telling me it won’t be on the shelves for long

FancyRat · 11/06/2024 15:23

There is no way that adding cows milk to oat milk uses less carbon lmao, surely that is an outright lie?

Such a stupid product. I like oat milk, so I buy oat milk. I already have cows milk in the fridge!

Here's an example, @DogInATent though other organic non-dairy milk substitutes are available, of course
https://www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/alpro-organic-soya-long-life-no-sugar-dairy-free-milk-alternative/035988-18074-18075

Unfortunately soya was the other thing I was trying to avoid! But thanks for thinking of me.

In the end I just gave up and decided that the medication would just have to take it's chances with my regular diet - the dose was being reactively adjusted to blood levels in any case.

The soya milk was just an example. Any organic plant milk substitute, fresh or uht, is free of added calcium eg this one

So glad to find this thread! Only just saw the advert and had all the above thoughts 🤣 What a bizarre marketing concept!

Ejac · 15/02/2025 16:40

The smug milk is 30 percent less saturated fat than semi skimmed
The butter spread is 40 percent saturated fat than butter so yes I use it

Branleuse · 15/02/2025 16:44

i bought some to try, as I like oat milk, but not vegan.
It tastes a bit like sterilised milk, and its expensive. Its neither as nice as oat milk nor dairy milk. Pointless.

Sunshineandoranges · 15/02/2025 16:46

Perhaps the people who buy smug milk will also be buying the I don’t give a crap toilet paper…weird marketing!

Moier · 15/02/2025 16:49

Oh wow didn't know about this.
I want to go onto oat milk.. this will help me wean myself off cows milk... then hopefully I'll be able to just have oat milk.
Ty for posting.
( I've done this with other things when they have mixed them).

100g of semi skimmed milk contains a whopping 1.3g of saturated fat. It's not a lot.

StormingNorman · 15/02/2025 16:50

I thought this was another goady breastfeeding thread 😂😂😂

LucyBnotG · 05/04/2025 14:16

I wondered who on earth this was made for but then I looked at the back of the carton and I realised it was absolutely made for me. I've been stocking up on this when it's on offer (£1/1L) for a few reasons:

  1. It contains fewer calories than semi-skimmed and fits easily into my weight loss journey
  2. I enjoy the taste, the blend of oat and dairy works well in coffee but also tea
  3. It's cheaper for me (when on offer) than dairy
  4. It lasts months unopened in the fridge and seems to stay fresher than dairy once opened, great for someone who lives solo and struggles to finish milk before it goes off
I agree the name is off putting, I would never try to be smug about anything. I can see why people think this milk is pointless but I wouldn't be without it now.
Xiaoxiong · 05/04/2025 14:22

I actually think it might be for me too...I like the taste of oat milk but so many have seed oils added to them. If there is to be added fats to milk, I'd prefer it was butterfat than seed oils.
