Things that you can’t quite believe were the norm

What’s one of those things you think in 10/20/30 years people will go “WTF why was that acceptable?”

For me - the Jeremy Kyle show. I’m so pleased it’s off air - awful poverty porn hosted by a nasty little bully and enabled by god-complex shit stirring producers. Also who wants to watch so much shouting and arguing at 9.25am!

Oh we had a pouffe, they were popular in the 70s.
Dunhelm still sell them!

Nuns pulling boys pants down and hitting their bums with a ruler in my class! 1985

EverythingYouDoIsaBalloon · 10/06/2024 17:19

PS to my last post: in fact, unbelievably, I just remembered there was a public information film telling mums to make sure the pram wasn't weighted down with shopping before you left your baby in its pram and went into the shop, to ensure the pram didn't tip up! Fine to leave the baby in the first place then, obviously! 😯

Twototwo15 · 10/06/2024 17:19

I would like to think that in 10/20/30 years time people will think that about ambulances taking 19 hours to attend people, 14 hour waits in A&E, 3 weeks wait for a GP appointment, but I’m not convinced it will ever get any better.

Meh. I left baby in the car to pop in the shop 😬

I’m confused
was wearing nappies after age 2 the norm?
or were most young children before age 2 toilet trained?
i have a 2.5 year old and every thing I read is about toilet training being “child-led” and “when your child is ready”- problem is my toddler doesn’t tell me he has been or needs to go ?
I don’t think it helps that nappies are “ultra absorbent” “dry for 12 hours” etc
i have potties all around the house and try to get him to sit on it to “go” - sometimes he does have a wee sometimes not
we read books about it
not sure what else I can do?

A lot of the child led potty training was pushed by a pediatrian paid for by Pampers.

Set aside a long weekend in the garden, go shopping for pants of their choice, and go for it. See what progress you make in 3 days.

Leaving babies outside shops in prams.

Yes, and also "airing" babies in the garden. My nan would take the pram to the end of the garden with hers, even in the cold, and leave them there to nap in the fresh air totally out of sight. She'd just bundle them up and go inside.

In primary school (1970s) my class was once told that if anyone forgot their PE kit again they'd have to 'strip off and then go to the headmaster'. I'm not even sure where to start with that (hopefully empty) threat!

@Pedallleur

Chris Moyles was the Dj and that did happen. then we had the phone hacking of seemingly everyone and anyone. Elton john, Mrs Lawrence (mother of Stephen). no one seemed to be off limits

No. It really didn't happen numerous sources to show it was a hoax.

When I was a very young baby, apparently my mum once forgot me outside a shop! 😯 She'd only taken a few steps away before she remembered me, though, so that's something. 😂

There was no issue at my junior school. PE kit stayed at school all year and then handed back. It was presumably washed before the next child got it.

If I remember rightly, the cold air was thought to be good for their constitution? 😯

TheyreWafflyVersatile · 10/06/2024 17:08

Surely the issue with the 11 and 12 year olds isn't that they're left alone and have a lack of provision - it's that we expect there to be provision by this age, rather than being comfortable letting them roam around as many of us did at that age. I loved it when my parents went to work, and I'd watch summer TV, walk to friends', take the bus to town, wander in the fields, cook myself lunch, read, draw, etc.

Increasingly research shows that scheduled, supervised clubs are (generally speaking) leagues behind free-play in terms of benefits. Of course there are still risks from things like traffic, but generally speaking children are so much safer outdoors than we were in the 70s/80s. News reporting means that everyone is terrified of letting a 12 year old spend the day without adult supervision or clear 'plans', however. (Or is that what you meant, sorry!)

I'm as much thinking about the boredom aspect and kids getting up to no good.

Nobody keeping an eye on them and what they are getting up to I'm thinking smoking, vaping, trying alcohol, drugs. Boys and girls - two become 3.

All that stuff that kids get up to when left to their own devices for too long.

I hope that in the future transphobia will be viewed with the same distaste as homophobia. It’s pretty obviously rehashed ‘gay panic’ nonsense and it’s embarrassing to see people peddle it. Pathetic.

Of course you still get wildlife in the bedroom if you have a light on and the window open. bugs haven't changed their habits!

I didn't say that there wouldn't be insects in the room.

DuesToTheDirt · 10/06/2024 17:39

RainbowZebraWarrior · 10/06/2024 15:32

There has been an 83% drop in flying insects in the past 20 years in England (similar figures for Wales, Scotland etc) so I think it was the sheer numbers the PP was talking about.

I got numerous bugs on my windscreen on a recent drive, and it was a real blast from the past. It just doesn't happen much now.

The big difference between transphobia and homophobia is that gay people aren't claiming a disputed [to put it mildly] identity.

Lesbians and gays claim to be attracted to people of the same biological sex as themselves; while it can be argued that they should not be, it's not reasonable to argue that they are not attracted to people of their own biological sex.

Trans people claim to be something other than their own biological sex; it is reasonable to challenge this, as it is impossible to change biological sex.

And homophobia still exists - literally homophobia posts on this very thread! It’s really depressing.

The cold air is good for their constitution. All over Scandinavia this is still the practice. I don't know that the parents/carers go back inside out of earshot, though!

NotSoHotMess24 · 10/06/2024 17:55

Booooo!! Please don't derail another thread with stuff about trans people! I'm really enjoying this one atm! Lots of other threads where issues around the topic are ongoing.

Also, I thought of another. Phonecalls dropping because the signal has gone. Bet that'll be a headscratcher for the grandchildren.

I can’t imagine many 11 year olds having sex, smoking or drinking-sure there are outliers but none of the cohort of me and my friends did that. We’d go home, make some beans on toast and watch tv or chat about school/do homework, play with the pets etc. I:d suggest it’s the kids who have never spent time unsupervised that either can’t cope doing independent stuff or go off the rails. My kids were at home a couple of days a week alone from 11-they walked the dog, watched Hanna Montana, played football. The behaviour issues you’re talking about tend to happen around 14/15.

Wouldn't it be even more wonderful if we got to a place where there were no single sex spaces needed. No violence against women, no rape. Imagine, just a bunch of humans supporting and caring for each other. Mind blowing I know 😂
