What’s one of those things you think in 10/20/30 years people will go “WTF why was that acceptable?”

For me - the Jeremy Kyle show. I’m so pleased it’s off air - awful poverty porn hosted by a nasty little bully and enabled by god-complex shit stirring producers. Also who wants to watch so much shouting and arguing at 9.25am!

Also @Intriguedbythis who has said the Holocaust has got to do with what’s happening now? Why are you equating Holocaust survivors with the Israeli government?? You’re the only one doing that

First job when I was 16 was at Harrods. My ridiculously sexist contact said females MUST wear skirt/dress (not trousers), "American tan" tights if your legs were pale, 2 or 3 inch heels (or higher) and must wear make-up! I thought nothing of it - was happy to comply. Imagine getting away with that shit now??

That was Samantha Fox. I remember Ben Elton writing in disgust about it.

Yeah but I bet he had a good look at her tits first though.

Purely for research of course

Allowing your children unregulated on devices, letting babies and toddlers stare at screens for hours.

Unfortunately I think babies mindlessly staring at screens is going nowhere for a long time. A hell of a lot of parents do it for "the easy life".

After all their small child will sit statue still, eerily silent and look at only the screen. Much easier than a shock horror baby that babbles, interacts, moves around 😱

There's definitely times and places for tablets. Example being a dentist appointment that the child has to come to for childcare reasons, perfect time to ensure they will sit quietly in the corner. But waiting for a sibling in swimming pool? Look around! In the playground? Nooooo. (And yes, I've seen plenty of kids sitting on benches staring at iPads in a fucking playground!)

The other person pointed that out and mentioned the holocaust.

I was answering that I didn’t equate it at all?

I am agreeing with the poster that mentioned how insane it is we are watching a genocide in real time!

there were also genocide in the 90s in Africa and Yugoslavia . All horrendous and evil.

but the fact we are seeing it in front of our eyes on phones and social media now is absolutely mad

so sad we are still so unevolved!

My dm was given speed in the late 60’s for depression.
She said she could clean the whole house in a morning after taking one. 😂

Yes, it was very easy to get speed and other drugs on prescription.
Currently , many people with ADHD are prescribed Dexedrine, which is also speed.

I remember doing woodwork and metal work at school. It was considered very new and modern. I was telling my dc about how when I was little you could smoke in pubs and anyone who wanted to avoid it sat outside. They thought it was so weird.

Children's tv only on for a couple of hours after school and on Saturday morning.

Nagging your dad to get the internet as "everyone's got it", then the excitement of being able to email 2 of your friends with an e mail address you shared with your parents and siblings. Dial up being so slow, you finally get the website you want and then you have to get off because your mum wants to use the phone.

Intriguedbythis · 10/06/2024 08:18

@ItsNotAShopItsAStore

did you actually read what that person wrote?

crockofshite · Today 06:19

Oh, . so the massacre of 6m Jews and other undesirables was okay then?

do you understand that is a shocking accusation to put on the other commenter?

and this person ( aptly named crock of shite) above is the ONLY one who equated the two so please do not accuse me as I would never write flippantly like that.

thanks

Why? Mine all wore them until three and were then dry in a matter of days. Saved a lot of hassle and it becoming an issue.

Because (apparently) in the 'good old days' kids were trained well before two, and never ever once had an accident ever...

I do believe we train too late now on the whole, because of the convenience of disposable and also the busier life parents (mothers...) lead. I. The 1950s most mothers were at home all day with kids, and had terry nappies so there was both time and opportunity to train earlier.

However, I do think a lot of parents from the 50s-80s etc misremember a fuck ton of stuff. They'll insist that their kids NEVER answered back, behaved better, ate everything they were given, slept through at 6 weeks old, toilet trained perfectly at 15 months etc which is just untrue.

You have a point about the misremembering. Also, maybe they smacked more bums? Chasing more short term obedience but long term problems

Gensola · 10/06/2024 08:22

There’s a famous private school that apparently allowed children to be naked in swimming and in lessons - Summerhill? The children choose what to learn and there are no rules or punishments. It has a pretty shocking history.

TwixOwl · 10/06/2024 08:22

I remember circa 1997 walking into an old people's home asking for work experience and was told yes, turn up next week. Absolutely no paperwork done.

Could be, I know nothing about the man, I just remember the article in an Australian newspaper at the time. It was an interview and that was one of the things he mentioned.

TheSnowyOwl · 09/06/2024 19:45

The old ways really were the best, weren’t they. Let’s ignore that infant mortality was 32 in 1000 in the 1950s compared to 4 in 1000 in 2021. After all, who cares that the old ways meant many infants died unnecessarily. Let’s just get them out of their nappies asap! We will focus on that!

Edited

Kids were dying from not wearing nappies? Or was that a completely unrelated rant?

Pedallleur · 10/06/2024 08:27

the newspaper counting down the days to Charlotte Church being 16 (and the R1 DJ talking about 'teaching' her)

This is still very much a thing isn't it??

Nope. Not in any of the schools I have worked in and not when I was at school in the mid to late 2000s either. I’m the oldest so my mum had no experience of secondary schools- she thought it was disgusting that we didn’t shower after PE!

I don’t know why they’ve said it like it was just the girls though. The boys were expected to shower too!

Yes. I remember hearing Ben Elton ranting about it. Didn’t they picture her with her hands over her nipples. I think the punchline was that Tesco withdrew their advertising: well the Lord works in mysterious ways!

Yes, I think they did - I never saw it.

I find it disgusting that in early 2000’s and earlier than that girls in school had to have naked showers after PE lesson . No privacy whatsoever , nice way to knock someone’s confidence down , NOT, forcing a girl to do something she would never willingly do if given a choice ! Sounds like a prison . And most likely a teacher watching the girls have the shower too ! Sounds very pervy in my eyes !

Oh I remember this...my rude introduction to secondary school aged 11. 'Stop being shy, you're all made exactly the same!' the PE teacher barked at us as we reluctantly stripped. When we manifestly weren't all the same; apart from all the different shapes & sizes, at that age some of us were developing and some not.

I can't think why anyone thought it was a good idea, except if they actually wanted to humiliate us.

MrsBillyhargrove · 09/06/2024 20:36

The fact that I, as a child (and my siblings / all of my friends back in the 80s / early 90s) was allowed to play out, unsupervised, and my parents had no clue where I was / who I was with. I have children and I just cannot understand the older generational thinking of “oh they’ll be alright playing out, goodness knows where”. It was a predator’s day dream!!!

I think that we will look back at letting teenagers (and younger!) access to the internet in the same way but we let the predators into our homes.

newnamethanks · 10/06/2024 08:33

In the 1970s, in hospital to have my second child. Aged 23, eyebrow raiser now. In next bed to me, a 16 year old, excitedly waiting for her husband to arrive. In those somewhat sexually slack times, even I was shocked when the 45+ years old Tennis Professional walked in to see his bride and newly arrived son. More than shocked, I was horrified, she was barely out of school. Awful.

Catsmere · 10/06/2024 08:34

I remember my craptastic high school in Melbourne during the 70s installing showers with no curtains. We refused to use them.
