What colour should I paint my sons walls? When...

He has a mid grey carpet.
Grey and white wooden furniture.

And he has this rug? (I know it's a but weird to have a rug on a carpet but he loves soft things and lays on it all the time!)

He's 13 and I'm surprising him with a room make over. I'm getting him a new bed (he doesn't want his high sleeper anymore)

So I need a wall colour, curtain, bedding colour.

I don't know if having the walls the same colour as the rug would be too feminine?

Why don’t you ask him? Surprising a 13 year old with a new room is pretty risky.

Ask him? My 12 year old DS has fuchsia-pink bedroom walls, which I wouldn’t have chosen (it’s like sitting inside a lung), but which he loves. Despite the horrible clash with the Arsenal posters…

It's really not. We moved in 6 months ago and never touched his room from previous tenants, he's been happily living in it in a bit of a state so it's going to be a real upgrade.

He's a very gracious child and loves surprises.

I appreciate it may not be the right thing for all 13 year old but I know my son and he will be very happy so could I please have focus on the room, not whether or not I should tell him as that wasn't the focus of the thread.

Thankyou :)

You could do white walls and then a statement wall in charcoal or if you're feeling bold, black.

I'm thinking of getting this bed?

I feel that's quite a feminine bed, and along with a fluffy rug and white furniture etc, thinking ahead over the next few years is that the looks he's going to want as an older teenager?

Oh dear.

I'm trying to find something under £200.

I mean he loves the rug and if he doesn't in a year it can just be donated. It's not a permanent fixture.

Squigwords · 09/06/2024 10:16

OK. I'm going to ignore the rug. It was cheap and I can get him another colour and give that one to his sister.

So starting from scratch

Any colour to go with grey carpets,

And I need a bed 😅

My son has a lime green - Minecraft type colour- and he loves it. I was unsure to do it at first but with white furniture it a risky looks really good. It’s only on one wall though.

I can't do anything crazy like that, that's part of the reason I've not asked him

It's rented and we get an inspection in 6 months and it says decorating is permitted but it must be tasteful.
We were told no outlandish colours.

If you want a bed to last him, I'm go with something abit more masculine. Ikea Malm have black single beds with drawers underneath for under £200 or maybe a metal framed bed. If you could fit a double in though, I'd go for that with his age.

Comeoncar · 09/06/2024 10:24

If you're renting I'd go with a soft white and add detail in the accessories. House plants can work well.

Singleandproud · 09/06/2024 10:25

My DD choose Valspar salty Peat when she was 13, She has oak coloured furniture and curtains and flooring and wanted a woodsy/ natural feel but I would go well with light grey/white too. The Valspar paint had great coverage and wasn't that expensive. Plenty of colours to choose from if it's not to your taste.

Are you renting? Would you have to repaint it at the end? If so I'd go with white walls but add warmth with soft furnishings and wall art. You can get printables for a couple of £ on Etsy and just get the image tinted at your local Print Shop.

Edit- I've just cross posted your latest update. S it probably won't work. John Lewis do some nice cheap black metal frame beds in their One Day range (I think that's what it's called)

It's housing association so we will be here a lifetime so I do want to make it homely and personable

Just flagging this bed frame as it's reduced to clear so within budget: www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-anyday-swirl-metal-bed-frame-single/black/p5990006

I'd be inclined to keep 3 walls light, maybe keep the grey but have one feature wall with some brighter or more interesting colour/s

Durdledore · 09/06/2024 10:29

I gave my 15 year old son carte blanche with his walls and he chose a creamy colour! I thought it was going to be a bit meh but it goes well with his grey bed. He now has white bedding (his choice) and it makes the room very restful I must admit.

Google ‘cream walls bedroom’ and in the images you’ll see the sort of thing. You can keep the grey rug too in my opinion.

Sunshineonasameyday · 09/06/2024 10:30

What's his favourite team or favourite game? Go with those colours.

Edited

I've got a full 5 litre tub of this valspar green.

Maybe add a dado rail and do green on bottom half and off white above?

What's his favourite colour OP?

I don't think he has one. Growing up it was bright yellow but now he doesn't show a preference for any

I'm not a fan of metal beds. We all ahd them growing up and they just turn so squeaky. Thankyou though.

Also you can get a trim off Amazon that goes across the join between ceiling and wall which finishes the wall of really nicely like coving but comes in different widths and patterns/textures and hides any iffy cutting in. If you buy it use super glue not the adhesive they provide as it's rubbish and falls down.
