What colour should I paint my sons walls? When...

He has a mid grey carpet.
Grey and white wooden furniture.

And he has this rug? (I know it's a but weird to have a rug on a carpet but he loves soft things and lays on it all the time!)

He's 13 and I'm surprising him with a room make over. I'm getting him a new bed (he doesn't want his high sleeper anymore)

So I need a wall colour, curtain, bedding colour.

I don't know if having the walls the same colour as the rug would be too feminine?

I'd go for sage green or denim blue. Both tasteful and restful colours.

BigBoysDontCry · 09/06/2024 10:45

Navy blue and white/neutral. Goes with anything, isn't too childish and you can add in colour with rug/cushions in his favourite colour. Anything from red to yellow to teal will all go.

BigBoysDontCry · 09/06/2024 10:46

Any bed with no footboard, he might grow a lot and need to dangle feet over the end.

I know this sounds a bit grim , but I'd recommend an all wood bed( or metal ) as having a fabric headboard or surround could be dodgy re greasy hair & hormones and other things !

frozendaisy · 09/06/2024 10:49

Chalk blue walls
Most colours go with grey
And get a couple of fun lamps

CadyEastman · 09/06/2024 10:50

How about painting 3 walls white or very pale grey and then papering one wall like this?

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 09/06/2024 10:53

That’s a beautiful rug, Op. I would have the walls in a similar sort of colour, though not an exact match, perhaps one tone lighter.
You might get a bedspread or throw or duvet cover in a darker tone , perhaps with a pattern to introduce some other colours, there are loads of ‘teal’ around at the moment.

Growlybear83 · 09/06/2024 10:53

How about having at least some of the walls in black? My daughter was desperate for a black room at that age and it really did look lovely when it was done. I used a soft sheen emulsion on all four walls and it was broken up with white bedding, pale cream curtains, and cream carpet - the carpet was quite new at the time and so I didn't want to change it, but it would have looked even better with a grey carpet like you've got. Because everything else in the room was either white or pale, it wasn't oppressive at all, but I think it was important to have a slight sheen on the walls. I bought several cheap white box frames to re-frame her pictures. I ended up liking the colour scheme so much that I kept the black walls when I turned the room into my home office when my daughter left home.

If he’s 13 and space allows, get him a double bed, don’t buy a single for a 13 year old (and it’s not about future girlfriends staying, it’s about being comfortable-as an adult I always feel I’m away to fall out of a single)

Revelatio · 09/06/2024 10:54

Pale pink or cream to make it look a bit warmer with all the grey. What colour are the window frames? If white I would go with a white wooden bed. I don’t like blue and grey, it looks like a dull 80s office. A yellow would also be nice and bright.

I wouldn’t worry about the paint being too bold as you can always cover it up with white and repaint.

Totally agree with this. They grow up quicker than you think. We didn't have the room for a double so bout a small double instead.

BigBoysDontCry · 09/06/2024 10:56

This bedding from Next with white, grey and navy could be a starting point.

If he likes yellow, you can get a butter yellow.

Peabody25 · 09/06/2024 10:59

www.argos.co.uk/product/9373233 this is a habitat one, but Argos have tonnes under £200!

buffyslayer · 09/06/2024 11:05

The rug could work with these sorts of colours - I'm sat next to this blanket and it's the colours I have in my living room!

The Next sale should be soon I think. They often have small doubles which is what my teen DD has and fits in the room nicely and gives her that extra space without taking up as much room as a double. Then just get a small double mattress from Argos which you can do on Buy now pay in...X months

Hoppinggreen · 09/06/2024 11:19

Double bed and keep everything neutral apart from maybe some navy blue bedding or similar

I offered him a double and he doesn't want it. I only just bought him a new single mattress when we moved so the plan is to switch to a double when he's 16. Like all his brothers did.

I haven't got the cash for a double bed frame and a decent mattress right now and he has a good 6 month old single mattress.

He says he just want a low single, not his highsleeper anymore.

Go for a simple wooden frame bed. Not squeaky and he can paint it a colour later on if he wasn't too. Natural wood will warm any space also. Too much grey looks too cold.

BigBoysDontCry · 09/06/2024 11:32

If you already have a good mattress then something from IKEA would fit the bill. I'd stick with white (or grey) if his other furniture is grey and white. DSs have the Brimnes ones (in double not single) but they got these straight from their bunk beds as young teenagers as they were already tall and are now 6'4 and 6'3. The beds have been going strong for about 10 years and moved about a few times too.

WeAllHaveWings · 09/06/2024 11:45

My sons room is denim drift with brenton blue on two walls.

We had never gone for such dark paint as the brenton blue before but ds chose it, one wall it is on is broken up with white fitted wardrobes and a door, and the other a window and it looks stunning (when his room is tidy!).

imo denim drift is brighter in real life than it looks in the chart. The only thing I would say is don’t put the dark paint on walls likely to get scuffed as it shows marks easily.

the middle combination in the chart might go well with your grey floor depending on the shade.

I really like the denim drift.

I just casually asked him what colour he may like his toom one day and he did say blue.
So may go for this. Thanks.

If you already have white furniture and new single mattress, then I would just go for white wooden single from IKEA.

Then paint walls white and navy blue. Add navy/ denim accessories

https://www.myscandinavianhome.com/2018/05/small-space-make-over-teen-boys-bedroom.html?m=1 - this kind of vibe.
The shelf painted same colour as one dark wall could work also. Either one long or paint secondhand full bookcase same colour as the wall.

Opinions on this bed?

Yes think that's better than the other two options

Squigwords · 09/06/2024 10:03

I'm thinking of getting this bed?

I don't think a fabric valance is very practical for a teenage boy and being light grey will likely show scuff marks from shoes. I think the black bed looks much better, more practical and easier to vacuum underneath.
