How do you clean your shower?

Ok, I'm feeling officially old now as it's Saturday night and it doesn't seem that long ago I was getting pissed on cheap pre-nightclub wine, then heading out with friends, full of excitement at what the night might bring.

Now I'm sitting indoors, ( still drinking cheap wine) but full of excitement at the new over-the-bath shower I had fitted today! 🤦‍♀️😳

So anyway - to the question!

How do you clean your showers? Are there any brilliant ready to use products out there, that don't involve me mixing white vinegar, bicarb of soda, wild hamster semen and having the watermarks on the shower screen exorcised?

The shower is chrome, the screen is glass and the tiles are ceramic matt stone effect.

Thank you.

I use wire wool. It's effective, doesn't need chemicals and doesn't scratch the glass

Method shower spray. Spray it on as you are getting out and it keeps things shiny without scrubbing. I also think it smells divine.

I second this!

Is it ok to use Viakal on the glass?

Viakal is a bugger to rinse and has quite a strong smell. CIF Perfect Finish 100% limescale remover is as effective, easy to rinse and doesn't smell quite so toxic. I use it for the whole bath/shower area including the chrome bits on the shower door and it hasn't done any damage yet. I don't think it would be advisable on some types of tiles.

I use a normal disinfectant, usually flash bathroom to clean it. Use the water from the shower and scrubbing sponge.
If it's particularly bad marks, I'll use the pink stuff.
Once I've washed it all off I use viakal! It's great for water marks etc. I leave it on for five mins and then wash off with the water and scrub a bit more when doing it.
Then I use windoline!!

Always worked for me!!

Helloworld56 · 09/06/2024 09:12

Equal amounts of white vinegar and water, plus a squeeze of washing up liquid, mixed in a spray bottle.
Spray it into the glass, leave for 15 minutes or so, then hose down with the shower attachment.
Then a squeegee (or you can leave that bit out).
Then polish with a micro fibre cloth.
Job done.

Zonder · 09/06/2024 09:14

Viakal on tiles and glass. With a squeegee scraper thing.

maw1681 · 09/06/2024 09:31

I've seen people say rub a dishwasher tablet on the screen and taps to get rid of limescale , I've never tried because we luckily live in a soft water area.
I just use a normal bathroom spray and microfibre cloth to dry the screen and taps. Mould spray as needed on the grout as soon as anything appears

Startingagainandagain · 09/06/2024 09:32

I do use a 'hippy potion' :): white vinegar & baking soda...

Plus the job of routinely clearing up by hand any build up of soap/hair in the drain.

I keep a dishmatic filled half and half with fairy liquid and vinegar in the shower. Most showers I run it over the glass while I’m in (and as it’s quite natural you’re not gassing yourself with bleach fumes and hot shower water) and rinse. I do live in Scotland so I think our water is soft but sometimes I’ll squeedgee it down if I’ve got time. During a proper bathroom clean I would kartcher window vac and dry with a cloth.

I also flick the dishmatic round the sink most days to get rid of toothpaste and keep it half decent between cleans.

FrenchFries2024 · 09/06/2024 10:24

After each shower, I spay Method Daily Shower on the screen and squeegee it. Shower spray on all the chrome too. Twice a week (Wed and Sun) scrub round with a dishmatic filled with washing up liquid and give a good rinse. About once a month, good clean with bathroom cleaner and Viakal for screen.

ohthejoys21 · 09/06/2024 10:35

Showershine- spray, leave then rinse off and dry.

theemmadilemma · 09/06/2024 10:36

Viakal once a week, tiles, glass the whole lot.

Still looks like new.

Keepthosenamesgoing · 09/06/2024 10:36

The game changer for me is that after every shower I squeegee /wipe the shower screen down. I live in hard water area and basically have zero marks

Lurkingandlearning · 09/06/2024 10:41

Just dry all surfaces with a spare towel before you get out of the shower - no water marks, no lime scale buildup and no chance of mould

kitchenhelprequired · 09/06/2024 11:35

Lidl's limescale remover. It's not a spray and much more effective than the Viakal spray. You can pour it along the top of the shower screen and let it run down, put some in a plastic bag and put the shower head in overnight and liberally pour over other parts of the shower. Leave it for however long you're got and then shower it off. Always use a squeegee on the shower screen to help prevent limescale buildup.

HappiestSleeping · 09/06/2024 11:36

Get a water softener. Seriously, it changed our lives.

Nicklebox · 09/06/2024 11:39

Rinse with cold water. When the water is hot the limescale deposits stay on the surfaces and leave cloudy smears.

Ohnobackagain · 09/06/2024 12:04

@ShowerOfShites best thing was vendors left a squeegee when I moved house recently, it was left on side of the bath and I just thought I might as well carry on using it. So when I turn off the shower I quickly squeegee the tiles and screen to clear down excess water. It makes a huge difference not only because it avoids a lot of hard water effects but dries the room quicker so less mould to build up. £1 from B&M or this is it on Amazon: https://amzn.eu/d/hO2VFuh

ShowerOfShites · 09/06/2024 12:29

@Ohnobackagain great, thank you 👍

I bought a scrapey blade squeegee thing as someone told me to run that across the screen after every shower.

Not convinced it'll make that much difference though.

We got our bathroom done a while ago and I have the rest of the house driven demented reminding them to squeegee the shower afterwards. They do seem to be doing it! It honestly makes a huge difference, scummy water marks on the glass door are a thing of the past! (just hope they keep it up)

"Dish Daddy – Scrub Daddy" https://scrubdaddy.co.uk/product/dish-daddy/

I use this with a huge D bath and high tiling being 5' tall it's very useful. It's supposed to be for dishes.

Dish Daddy – Scrub Daddy

Washing the dishes just got easier with the soap dispensing Dishwand from Scrub Daddy! Dish Daddy is a soap dispensing Dishwand like no other!

Ombadcat · 09/06/2024 12:40

Squeegee after showers, makes a huge difference.

I mostly clean the bathroom with washing up liquid and sponge but if there are any stubborn bits of limescale I use the cheap loo cleaner from Tesco. Works a treat and is way cheaper than viakal and smells better too.

poppym12 · 09/06/2024 15:15

I found that warming white vinegar for a few seconds in the microwave before rubbing it into the shower doors seemed to make it work better. Limescale came off without much rubbing.

Ohnobackagain · 09/06/2024 19:01

@ShowerOfShites I was sceptical but decided to try it as it was sitting there and like @LifeInAHamsterWheel I’m a convert, even if I shouldn’t need to be excited by it. We have very hard water so anything that helps is great. Do still sometimes use descaler type cleaners but no need on the tiles or screen anymore!
