Housework routine, v lazy

Qwerty21 · 08/06/2024 10:02

Does anyone have any good tips or recommendations of apps/websites for keeping on top of the housework? I'm pretty lazy and I tend to think oh well I'll do it tomorrow then I don't do it tomorrow. I think some sort of routine will help. But I don't have the time or effort to do lots every day.

fwiw I don't live in a tip! But it certainly could be tidier

my advice

get off mumsnet and just crack on with one room and aim to have sparkling by end of the day

😦
you sound tetchy this morning! Good luck with cleaning up your home

Youdontevengohere · 08/06/2024 10:12

To be fair, it isn’t awful advice. You can faff around devising routines or you can just crack on and do it.

This! 😁

I find it easiest to do it first thing in the morning, then it's done and I don't have to think about it.

I also do some everyday so it never builds up to a massive task that feels overwhelming and stressful.

Dryshampoofordays · 08/06/2024 10:15

The Organised Mum Method is a good one. She has free downloadable routines of daily jobs plus weekly jobs to give you weekends housework free, you can also subscribe a few quid a month and she has guided cleans that help keep you motivated, I love them!

MonsteraMama · 08/06/2024 10:16

Robots. I have a robot mop and two robot vacuums and swear by them 😂 I will never hoover or mop again.

Other than that I use the Home Tasker app to set a schedule which is then shared with husband and daughter. We each have set jobs to do around the house and the app helps us keep track of them and mark them off as we go. I'm a chronic procrastinator so having a rota makes it easier for me!

I found this book very useful in terms of reframing how I think about housework.

”How to keep house while drowning” by K C Davis

So this is what I'm currently debating here. My husband likes to do little and often, except he doesn't! I like to do a monthly blitz where my family have the children for the day and we get it all done. He hates this and pushes back every month. But then doesn't do little and often! So what is the solution???!

I'd advise this too. I'm a queen of procrastination plus I have adhd. I write myself a list daily of the things I want to get done that day, which is mostly the same thing everyday. After work before work whenever I still write the list 😂. Big clean top to bottom, bedsheets on all beds every Friday ready for the weekend. I clean kitchen and bathrooms daily anyway. Even if I'm really up late doing it I stick to my list and get it done. Can't beat waking up Saturday morning to a spotless house.

See, I can't think of anything worse than a monthly "blitz" as it takes over a whole day and becomes this massive exhausting task.

We do half an hour every morning and a 10 minute run about before bed and it's done. No DC though which does make it much easier Grin

As someone with ADHD, "crack on and do it" is really not as easy as you're making it sound 😂 if I don't have a list and a strict routine I'll say "I'm going to clean the house today" and by the end of the day I've crocheted a scarf, found and read all my highschool workbooks, started reorganising a drawer that didn't really need reorganising then gone out half way through to buy a candle we don't need and come back with a cabbage, a potted plant and some dog biscuits.

I truly wish it was as easy as crack on and do it!

HurdyGurdy19 · 08/06/2024 10:21

Is Flylady still around? I used it years ago, and it helped me to get into a routine. I did find the number of emails a bit overwhelming, so was glad to get away from them in the end. If I remember rightly, everything is broken down into five minute slots, so you don't walk into a room and feel that it is impossible to tackle. So for example, she'd email a reminder to clear the dining table, and not try to do the whole room at once.

She also got you to identify "hotspots" in your home - the areas where clutter builds up most, and to keep them tidy/clear more often than other parts of the home.

ZeroFucksGivenToday · 08/06/2024 10:21

Cheap robot hoover - it changed my life. Makes me do a quick tidy and then off he goes.

when he's off and trundling, stick YouTube on to some seriously good dance music, set a timer for 15mins. Do one room. You'll be amazed. I set another one and then I can get all downstairs done in 30 mins.

Declutter as you go, I found two pairs of shoes on the shoe rack that don't fit DD, so I chucked them on FB page free for immediate collection. Meant more shoes could fit where I needed.

Recharge hoover. Chuck bleach down the loo, send hoover upstairs and go again.

I can do everything in about an hour nowadays. I'm no Mrs Hinch, but things are clean and make my headspace feel much better.

Mindymomo · 08/06/2024 10:22

My Mother in Law used to have a hand written chart stuck to the inside of a cupboard, without fail her weekends and evenings were spent doing housework, I had to tell her to sit down. She was a godsend to us, she looked after my DC whilst I worked and I always came home to washing and ironing all done and my kitchen looking spotlessly clean. Myself I don’t seem to have any routine other than Monday is my wash day and Tuesday is my ironing day.

Sunnysummer24 · 08/06/2024 10:22

Tomm is a good starting point. I’ve realised doing level 1 every day makes the biggest difference to my house. But I think you just need to start something and work out what needs to change for you.

Robot hoover is an amazing investment for a tidy/clean looking house.

TheTigerWhoCameToEatMyHusband · 08/06/2024 10:23

@MonsteraMama haha I'm glad I'm not the only one. My bins full up of of my bloody lists which literally say the same thing everyday 😂. I have to keep me on track. Sometimes I'm really proud and don't write the list and manage to just crack on and do it not often though.

buffyslayer · 08/06/2024 10:24

Timer and music for me
Set timer for 20-45 mins every day depending how much time I have
Put music on
Start in room that needs the most attention and get as much as possible done

I put a podcast or audiobook on while I sort and clean. I don't do it very often though!

junebirthdaygirl · 08/06/2024 10:32

I do 30 minutes every morning. I can get an amazing amount done when l know its a half an hour. Kitchen , bathroom first then fly around. During the day if l put the kettle on l spend that time doing one job. I am not a good housekeeper but keeping this up helps me stay on top.

AllotmentTime · 08/06/2024 10:38

The Organised Mum Method. I would have said I was pretty efficient when I actually got down to cleaning but honestly her guided sessions have made SUCH a difference to me. You do have to pay for the audio sessions (the routine and checklists and everything are free) but they're well worth it. I get a lot more done in a limited time with her in my headphones!

She has a variety of stuff too if you want to do a big blitz you can, but her overall premise is proactive cleaning so that the house doesn't get awful in the first place. So whichever approach you have can work.
