Awful, sudden onset of multiple allergies. What's happening to me?

maybeinanotherpie · 07/06/2024 21:58

In the last 6 months, I have started developing allergies

The first was a very serious reaction to cats (I don't own any). My throat started closing, hives, watering eyes and sneezing. The use of a friend's inhaler and piriton stopped it

In the last few weeks, I ready angrily to everything I'm eating.

I have kept a food diary and the only safe foods I'm not reacting to, are bread, milk, cheese (dairy), pasta and chicken

I am reacting badly to beef, I get covered in hives and get an itchy throat. Start sneezing.

Every veg I've tried I'm reacting to - the only exception being cooked spinach and tomatoes, oranges and watermelon. Lemon is also fine. Cucumber fine

I am reacting the same way I do to beef to carrots, broccoli, figs, banana, grapes, apple, apricot, nectarines, plums, most vegetables. Loads more

I am making sure I'm not adding anything to it so I know it's the singular thing at a time I'm reacting to

I am coming out in hives and weeping eyes every time. Piriton sorts it but I'm tired on it.

What the hell is going on?! I've never had allergies before

I am interestingly not a hayfever sufferer and still not. Yet have managed to develop allergies to pretty much every food I try and eat recently Sad

I have tried my GP. Trying to get an appointment asap. But what could this actually be? Am I developing some sort of immunity disorder?

I have lost 10lb in 3 weeks. Sounds great but I'm exhausted

Well done for eliminating foods and then introducing them, that’s how you can avoid the triggers.

The immune system can suddenly play up and then go back down again. I had to go on steroids for insect bites over 2 summers that spread like third degree burns everywhere. Then just like that, been years and no reaction. Never knew why or how. Don’t think even allergist doctor could tell you, the immune system is being modified in all of us by environmental factors, a growing problem.

branvan5000 · 07/06/2024 22:05

Can you go privately for an allergy test? I'd be tempted to see someone asap if you can afford it.

I can try. But what exactly am I asking for? I just have come across over 50 things giving me severe reactions

Can I really be expecting them to test for all of them? I'm not sure how it works

They will do multiple at a time. They do pin picks on your arm in rows and pipette different substances on. I guess you need an allergy specialist?

Greengrapeofhome · 07/06/2024 22:20

Try loratadine if piriton makes you drowsy

Swingingvvoter · 07/06/2024 22:22

I've heard it's something about getting older, peri menapuse?

How do you get private allergy stuff

HeartandSeoul · 07/06/2024 22:24

I hope I don’t sound rude OP, but how old are you? I only ask as I wonder if it could be related to perimenopause/menopause. It can be one of the many symptoms, sadly.

Great minds! Sorry, your post appeared as I was typing mine (I wasn’t copying you, honestly 😁!).

I am 26. So unlikely (not just age, normal cycles etc too)

Sounds like mast cell activation syndrome

nobeans · 07/06/2024 22:27

Most of the cells in your body have turned over within 7 years so it's possible to get allergies

Alicewinn · 07/06/2024 22:28

Is your system stressed out ? have you recently had a shock / big change emotionally?

AFmammaG · 07/06/2024 22:31

Sounds like oral allergy syndrome to me, more common in children but not unheard of for adults to develop it. This leaflet is useful:

Would explain why it’s so many foods and antihistamines sort it out.

TakeOnFlea · 07/06/2024 22:34

My child is going through the same. Following for ideas. Hope you're ok

Unable to read the full thread as comments aren’t loading - apologies if this has been mentioned already.

Have you explored Mast Cell Activation Syndrome? Very common with hypermobility spectrum conditions (EDS for example), and autoimmune and digestive issues.

MCAS is where your body starts to identify things as a threat, and respond with a histamine reaction.

Lots more information online, one GP mentioned it to me and the next had never heard of it, so I’m not sure if it’s widely recognised.

AFmammaG · 07/06/2024 22:35

I see what you said about not suffering from hay fever but it’s possible you have been exposed to a new or different type of pollen recently.

determinedtomakethiswork · 07/06/2024 22:35

I think you should be referred to hospital actually. This is very unusual and very worrying. I don't mean it's necessarily something really serious, I think that it's the change in you that is worrying. I would try to get a doctor's appointment ASAP and ask to be referred to a hospital

Durdledore · 07/06/2024 22:36

Mast Cell Activation Syndrome? Oh I went off to answer a text from someone and have come back to see others have said the same. But that’s what it immediately sounded like to me.

maybeinanotherpie · 07/06/2024 22:39

Thank you for the replies, I appreciate it. No, never heard of MCAS. I was diagnosed with SVT just 9 months ago. Strange as one of the symptoms for MCAS is tachycardia

The hives and itching are just ruining my life. I will honestly not even scratch and I can feel the hives forming and my body feeling all weird and reactive

Again though I have never even had allergies okay I lied and said I was allergic to peanuts like my best friend when we were in Year 3

Look into Chronic Angiodema and Urticaria. It may not be a food or outside trigger but your immune system attacking itself.

Scampuss · 07/06/2024 22:46

With that extensive range of things suddenly seeming to cause these reaction, it does sound like something more systemic than specific allergies (eg MCAS or spontaneous urticaria/angiodema as mentioned above). Your GP should be referring you and also prescribing high dose antihistamines.

This happened to me, I developed at least 3 serious allergies in peri-menopause. I don't know if it's a thing but developing allergies can happen to anyone at any stage of life as can Mast Cell Activation Syndrome which can also bring on allergic symptoms.
