To ask if I am at risk here? Suddenly cannot eat without a reaction

sandycans · 01/06/2024 21:50

I am mid 20s and ate a steak yesterday. Started sneezing and runny nose, throat felt a bit fuzzy

Just had another one as a treat and the same reaction. Throat is all itchy

In the last 6/7 weeks, I keep reacting badly to random stuff. Loads of fruit and vegetables making my throat feel like it's closing up!

I've kept food diary and fruits such as apples, plums, apricots, prunes, some nuts, grapes. They're all making my throat feel narrow. I did manage to speak to GP about those and he said it's probably oral allergy syndrome, and just avoid them unless they're cooked

But I don't suffer from hay-fever (they're related apparently).

Since then, I'm now reacting to veggies such as tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, broccoli, spinach. There's more

My throat starts itching and feeling less wide if that makes sense, and I come out in hives

I can't eat salami, chorizo, any pork unless it's a cooked sausage. I come out in hives and sneeze, throat closes

What on earth is going on?! The only thing I don't seem to react to is chicken, anything pasta or bread based, and cheese

I am literally reacting to so much stuff. And they're quite scary reactions

Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what's going on potentially? It's depressing Sad

Just to clarify also that I've never had any allergies before beyond sensitive skin sometimes

Look up elimination diet and start adding things in one by one.

Scampuss · 01/06/2024 21:53

You should be calling an ambulance when your throat is closing.

Oral allergy syndrome doesn't generally lead to anaphylaxis but it can.

Morningcrows · 01/06/2024 21:54

You sound like you need to carry an epi pen

ThursdayTomorrow · 01/06/2024 21:54

Are you getting a rash? Could it be anxiety making your throat feel tight rather than an allergy?

Thank you

Although I understand why you're saying that, surely it isn't classed as any type of anaphylactic reaction since I was fine in the end? Although I took Piriton which works within 15 minutes but leaves me exhausted all day

I do know though that allergies can worsen

It's so strange, I think I will have to do what a PP said and eat cheese and try adding more stuff in.

I don't really want to eat just carbs and cheese but I don't see what else I can do. I seem to be reacting to everything

Oranges are strangely fine. But that's about it. Even banana causing issues

She said she's getting hives too.

GoogleWhacking · 01/06/2024 21:56

If it is all those things it might just be something it's cooked with/covered in. I'd stop using cooking oil, salt and pepper etc.

Eat plain things singly, so steam brocoli for example, on its own with no sauce or condiments, just pure and see if that impacted. If not try steamed sweetcorn etc until I found what was doing it.

Another thought, could it be psychological? Are you anxious and that's triggering it after the first experience?

Either way, definitely see a GP

sandycans · 01/06/2024 21:56

Yeah, not anxiety. Don't feel anxious and I am taken by surprise each time as never had this issue before

Don't think so. Most of what I have mentioned is not cooked or cooked plain as I don't use oils much

Although I took Piriton which works within 15 minutes but leaves me exhausted all day There's another widely available antihistamine about the same price as Piriton which doesn't cause so much drowsiness. Boots had them side by side. Look for the active ingredient in Piriton and choose the one that has a different active ingredient.

AceofPentacles · 01/06/2024 22:00

Histamine intolerance? There's a list of foods on google with low histamine you could try

LetticeSlay · 01/06/2024 22:00

Get some liquid antihistamine for emergencies.

What did you have with the steak?

Athena101 · 01/06/2024 22:01

I have oral allergy syndrome which started in my teens. I have other allergies too but the syndrome just seems to be fruit and vegetables. Cooking them does work for me. Citrus fruit is fine for me. Your reaction does sound more severe though. I just get the itching in my mouth, although I can't peel carrots for example without my hands being affected.

Yeah I've been using liquid one

Just salt and only a tiny bit

I have oral allergy syndrome with raw fruit and veg. I do also have hayfever. It gives me an intensely itchy mouth and throat but no hives or smaller feeling airway and it passes after 10/15 min.

what happens if you take antihistamine daily? You can take loratadine if you’re affected by the drowsiness - I’m the same so can only take loratadine. When I’m taking them daily for hayfever, im able to tolerate raw fruits much better

if daily loratadine makes no different you should def go back to gp

I have had many self resolving anaphylactic episodes (confirmed by an immunologist - I didn't realise I was experiencing anaphylactic episodes as they were atypical) so yes, it absolutely can be anaphylaxis and resolve without adrenaline. But this doesn't mean the next one will not escalate. Have attached an allergy plan which outlines the signs of anaphylaxis.

VeryStressedMum · 01/06/2024 22:05

Dd has oral allergy syndrome, also she reacted to peanuts so she has an epipen.
More recently she's having episodes of spontaneous anaphylaxis, she under immunology for this they can't find anything so far. She hasn't needed the Epipen yet but she has an inhaler.

Scampuss · 01/06/2024 22:06

You could use a non-drowsy antihistamine, cetirizine is fast acting and can be bought as a liquid or tablets.

You do need to see an allergy specialist though.

VeryStressedMum · 01/06/2024 22:07

She takes antihistamine every day she's on fexofenadine 4 a day

CassandraWebb · 01/06/2024 22:09

I'd seen an allergy specialist. Ask your GP to refer you.

Look at MCAS

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 01/06/2024 22:13

You do need to get a proper confirmation from a doctor. Specifically for the meat, are you reacting to chicken, or is it just mammals? If just mammals, have you any reason to believe that you have been bitten by a tick? Alpha gal syndrome is spread by ticks and causes reactions to mammal meat protein.

Magpiecomplex · 01/06/2024 22:16

Random thought, are you eating all of these things off plates/bowls? I'm allergic to Fairy liquid, although not to the same extent you're experiencing, but I can always tell if the crockery and cutlery has been washed up with Fairy as I get very itchy.
