Ironing Bed Covers

Sorry not very exciting I know Blush.

But if you hang your bed covers on the line outside to dry do you iron them before putting away? And if you don't do they look like a 'crushed rag' (my wee mum
Used to say this) when you put them back on the bed?

I always iron them once dry but genuinely thinking I just can't be arsed anymore but if needs must.

My mother ironed literally everything- even tea towels. The ironing basket was always piled high and she spent hours stood at the ironing board - she wouldn't even sit down to do it. Even when I was quite young I used to do a bit for her to help out.
Since being an adult I only iron what I think really needs it but have generally ironed bedding. Not always though.
My adult son, who lives alone, never irons anything. He manages to look perfectly OK despite this.

It’s probably not bad for your health though tbf, stood up and gentle exercise rather than slouching on a couch all evening!

Seriously there is nothing more satisfying than getting into a fresh clean, ironed, set of bed linen. I have never NOT ironed a set of bed linen. All our bedding is 100% heavy cotton.

I suppose I am influenced by having actual linen as bedding as a child, so spoilt. Now that took some serious ironing.

I still have some sets tucked away, they would be classed as vintage now, but are still perfect!

Always ironed, with a tiny bit of spray starch. I'm a complete slattern in other ways but love ironed bedding.

I can’t remember the last time I ironed anything. (I deliberately buy clothes that don’t need ironing)
And definitely not bed sheets or duvet covers. Life is too bloody short!

Petrine · 07/06/2024 08:31

I iron all mine. I always have done so as I don’t like sleeping in creased bedding.

I’ve never ironed bedding and it’s genuinely not once occurred to me to do such a thing. Must result from what you grew up with. Sounds like it would be a right faff. Washing and drying them regularly is enough work as it is.

I’m the same. I remember when I was in school and my best friend said she had to go home to iron the bedsheets so couldn’t play out with us that day. I was so confused and even as an adult now, I don’t quite get it😅

FuckTheClubUp · 07/06/2024 08:57

For those that do iron their bedding, what does it feel like to sleep in creased bedding? I don’t even understand that. I never iron mine, it’s always creased but it doesn’t give me a weird sensation that makes me think I need to do something about it

Tooski · 07/06/2024 08:59

I pay someone to do it, but if it were left to me, no, not a chance.

If I was selling the house, yes.

Who cares what it looks like?

Isn't there some sort of spray you can spray onto bedding that gets rid of all the creases??

Steam? 😂

Bringthejury1 · 07/06/2024 09:07

Tooski · 07/06/2024 09:04

Steam? 😂

🤣🤣🤣 well that would be one method!! I looked it up and it's called "crease releaser" or something.

borntobequiet · 07/06/2024 09:09

I generally iron mine because the heat helps them dry properly. But I do like the feel of ironed sheets, pillows and duvet covers.
I listen to a podcast and find the exercise pleasant and relaxing.

IDontLikePinaColadas · 07/06/2024 09:12

If I'm having people to stay (read parents or DP's parents) and putting on my "domestic goddess" hat then I have been known to run a clothes steamer over the duvet cover when it's already on the bed to get out the worst of the creases, but as a general rule it's pillowcases only.

If you stay in hotels the bedding is always ironed...and feels different from unironed bedding (imo)

TheDandyLion · 07/06/2024 11:15

I find if you hang it perfectly straight on the washing line you don't need to iron the duvet cover as it's mostly crease free apart from the centre seam. Not as easy to do with fitted sheets but they can be pulled tight when making the bed anyway. I iron the pillow cases just because it feels nicer.

NailsHairNipsHeels · 07/06/2024 11:20

I never iron bedding...Or anything else for that matter.
After one sleep it's squashed and crumpled up so I'm not wasting my time

WinkyTinky · 07/06/2024 11:29

I do like things to be ironed to make them look finished, and I did always used to iron bedding to make the beds look neat. But now I am happy as long as they've been line dried and folded neatly in the airing cupboard which straightens them out anyway. I do have the perfect solution now as I have two sets of seersucker bedding which look great just as they are, no ironing required.

I also come from a home where my mam ironed everything down to underwear and tea towels. She still does this at 85 years old, and always offers to do mine if I'm too busy. Of course I don't let her! And anyway, I quite enjoy ironing. I could happily do it as a job.

CountryShepherd · 07/06/2024 13:42

Actually, I do like an ironed tea towel, I read that the heat of the iron has hygienic benefits!

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 07/06/2024 13:52

Never have. I tend to buy ones that claim they need little ironing. And I always pull them very taut on the line. If they are really wrinkly I throw into the dryer with an ice cub, think I've only done that twice.

Fifthtimelucky · 07/06/2024 14:09

In many ways my housework standards are vey low. However, I always iron bedding (all of which is 100% cotton). I try and remember to take it off the line or out of the tumble drier early enough so that it is still damp when I iron it.

I also iron drying-up cloths.

Bedding and drying-up cloths take up much less room in drawers and cupboards when they have been ironed.

bloodyhellKen22 · 07/06/2024 14:14

I use crease release when the bedding is already on. Just give it some time to dry and it's crease free in no time at all!

Cattery · 07/06/2024 14:16

No chance

DiscoBeat · 07/06/2024 14:29

No! We have Egyptian cotton ones and I wash them on a slower spin speed then fold them neatly over the line, and fold them off once dry. They're perfectly fine. I never ever tumble dry them!

Screamingabdabz · 07/06/2024 14:38

I’d love to know if there is a single man on the planet that would even think about this. And no I wouldn’t waste a single precious moment of my life ironing bed sheets.

AlwaysBlowingLightbulbs · 07/06/2024 14:49

Used to not now as by time it was ironed and folded it would be creased by time it came to using it. I never put back the same set as what I've just taken off.

mylifeisprettygood · 07/06/2024 15:01

I bloody love ironing and pretty much iron daily. I used to draw the line at ironing my kids pants but since the eldest went to uni there's a bit less to iron so I've found myself even ironing the little ones underwear 🤷🏻‍♀️. I find it relaxing and love a huge pile and I feel a genuine sense of satisfaction when it's all done and away. I can spot a non ironer at ten paces. But they probably have spotless bathrooms. I hate cleaning those 😆 so mine are never spotless.
