How much would you spend on a new mattress?

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 06/06/2024 23:26

A - if you had no budget
B - if you were me (no money, current mattress 15plus yrs, and has developed a very distinct bum/hip hollow. )

Is it worth buying cheap? To tide me over fir a couple of years. Or just stick it out with my current old, but originally good quality one

I have an ikea one that was about £100 and it's good after 7 years. Still completely flat and i always sleep well on it. I'd buy the same in either scenario unless I couldn't afford that in scenario B.

user1471505356 · 07/06/2024 07:37

Long time ago some people would put a wooden board under the mattress to fix the dip.

Bjorkdidit · 07/06/2024 07:38

A - probably up to £1000. Our current mattress cost about £600 for a king size. It's one of those 'mattress in a box' types and I can honestly say it's perfect, it's about 7 years old and showing no signs of wear. I simply can't see how one costing £2/3/4k+ would be significantly better to justify the massive cost.

B - it depends what you mean by 'no money' but it's definitely worth buying cheap. I know they say 'you get what you pay for' or 'buy cheap buy twice' but that doesn't mean that it's not possible to get something quite decent for a low price.

We've had cheaper Ikea mattresses before and they've been absolutely fine for the cost. Comfortable, supportive, last a good few years. I'd expect at least 5 years from even the bottom of the range ones.

I don't know what availability is like over the country, but near me (West Yorkshire) there are a lot of mattress factories that have shops where you can buy slight seconds at a discount, so that might be another place to look.

Or look at charity shops/second hand. BHF is well known as a good source of good quality second hand home furnishings with high standards - a relative tried to donate a mattress to them that was under a year old and still perfect except a tiny tiny stain on the side and they wouldn't take it. He sold it himself for £50 instead.

Yes, that's another option if 'no money' means no budget at all for a mattress.

Also can it be turned, top to toe and/or side to side, especially if its a double/king and you usually sleep alone. The dip will be a lot less noticeable if it's under your feet not your body.

Theweepywillow · 07/06/2024 07:42

What’s the likely hood of you having enough money to buy a good quality one on two years? If very low, then replace. If high, then hold out.

ours was about 1500 a few months ago, our last one was about 18 years old, the difference is astounding.

Caspianberg · 07/06/2024 07:43

We spent about £3k on current mattress. About 8 years ago now. It’s been the best money spent. It’s super king so already more expensive, and I think 20,000 sprung, with wool etc.

From button and sprung. They actually now have a clearance section for ex display/ returns/ wrong size made etc and i would definitely suggest looking at that as you could get a really decent mattress for 1/2 the usual cost.

Notellinganyone · 07/06/2024 07:45

We bought one on 4 years interest free credit. Twice. Once 20 years ago and then another last year. That meant we could spend £1800. Mattresses are not something to scrimp on if you can possibly avoid it and, in my view it’s mine well spent. The first mattress cost more than our car at that point!

TheChosenTwo · 07/06/2024 07:49

We bought one of those memory foam ones in a box a few years ago and it’s way too hot! Lovely in the winter but when it’s warmer it’s a nightmare.
It’s worth flipping it round if there’s a dip.
We bought the dds mattresses from Wayfair (is that what they’re called? Wayfare maybe?) and they’ve been pretty good. We did end up getting toppers for them because they weren’t very deep but they were very comfortable even without the topper. They were pretty cheap but this was going back about 5 years now. They’re probably 10
times the price now, just like everything else!

Luxell934 · 07/06/2024 08:46

I think you could buy a lightly used one or possibly even brand new from British heart foundation maybe or a similar charity if money is tight.

IKEA have some cheaper ones that aren’t too bad, or could you afford to spread the cost of a more expensive one and pay monthly?

KnittedCardi · 07/06/2024 08:53

Have you looked in your local Nextdoor or similar SM. I gave away an almost unused mattress when we re-did our spare bedroom. No-one bought it, so a local charity picked it up.

ImPunbelievable · 07/06/2024 08:56

I love my Ikea mattress. They're one of the only places that do true 'firm' mattresses in my opinion.

It's 7 years old and has a substantial dip now but it doesn't bother me, and was only about £250 for a king

BeyondMyWits · 07/06/2024 09:01

I spend just under one third of my life in bed and I spent about £1500.

With no money, I'd go down to the British heart foundation shop (other charities are available) and see if they have any high end mattresses going for a fraction of the new price. Often they've only been used periodically on a spare bed.

Jmaho · 07/06/2024 09:01

We've been I need of a new mattress for a while now. But everytime I look into it I get mind blown as there are too many options.
I find with these new hybrid types, Emma etc the reviews are either amazing or terrible! So then I forget about it for a bit
I did however buy a mattress for my son. I needed it really fast (doing up his room while he was on a short trip) and I opted for this one on Amazon and I'm really impressed so far

I have arthritis. I paid over £500 a few years ago, it has been worth every penny.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 07/06/2024 12:54

I would get a decent one on klarna or interest free credit from a bad shop

Notjustabrunette · 07/06/2024 13:20

i Once worked as a mattress buyer for a department store. I would spend around £500-£700 on a double. Obviously the price would go up for a king. I would go in store and try them out, depending on the level of support you need will have an impact on price. If you are a larger person with back issues, you will need a different level of support than a lighter person without back issues. Talk to the store staff, they will be able to help direct you, and don’t feel embarrassed about discussing your budget. Also, if you are buying in store, it’s worth asking if there are any discounts going on, you might get lucky.

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 07/06/2024 18:57

I had a quick look online last night amd was boggled by the variations and SUCH a broad price range. Its a non flip one that I've got so although I can spin it round I don't think I can turn it over. The feel of the dip is worsened by the fact that I have to sleep with a pillow wedge

I hadn't considered charity shops, maybe I should.

I don't get this not 'scrimping' on mattresses thing. Unless you know you have issues that require an expensive mattress, then I'd always start with an ikea one. I sleep perfectly well on mine so I can't see any benefit to spending more. It's been 7 years and it's still completely flat but obviously I don't know if it would last more than 10 years. Would one at double the price (after adjusting for inflation as it was £100 in 2017) last twice as long?

TopBun · 07/06/2024 19:28

We’ve had a few over the last few years, including two Emma mattresses, and have finally given up and bought an expensive one. I am so fed up with uncomfortable nights, and waking up with backache.

Fucking hell, £1-2 grand for a mattress😅 I got a nauturalex memory foam one that can be flipped and it's extra firm for my aches, £200 on Amazon. I'm sure you could get one on klarna or clearpay if like me that's alot to spend in one go

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 07/06/2024 21:10

I used to trust John Lewis reviews for mattresses, but these days I don't really trust them. They give anything a 4-5 star review and use Trust pilot or similar as proxy.

Alltheyearround · 07/06/2024 21:19

We got an Ikea one recently a vesteroy I think, also valaveg very comfy when we tried in shop.

249 and 349 respectively. Ours was at least 15 years old - happy with new one.

Delivered for around £40. Did have to air it for a week as very chemical smell.

StandardSize14 · 07/06/2024 21:22

A. I think mine was a bout 2.5k last year - a tempura cloud one . I love it.

B. Steal my mums spare bed one

buffyslayer · 07/06/2024 21:26

I started with a springs one and the spring came through but it was very old!
Then got a memory foam one, which developed a dip and I hated
Ended up with a combo one which is springs and memory foam and I really like

Pigeonqueen · 07/06/2024 21:26

Bensons for beds offer Klarna I think so you can split the payments interest free if that helps… 🤷‍♀️

We got ours for around £1k from Warren Evans, it’s about 10 years old now and still as good as when we got it. Worth every penny. I have lupus and bladder pain issues and being really comfortable in bed really matters to me.
