How much would you spend on a new mattress?

A - if you had no budget
B - if you were me (no money, current mattress 15plus yrs, and has developed a very distinct bum/hip hollow. )

Is it worth buying cheap? To tide me over fir a couple of years. Or just stick it out with my current old, but originally good quality one

Last one cost a grand compared to the £150 one I had previously and honestly it opened my eyes as to why I was always achey so I'm up for spending as much as you can! It's lasted years and still decent (possibly because we flip it every so often?)

You don't have to spend that imo but worth going round and trying them and getting advice. I wouldn't just order one blind.

Lots of pocket springs. JL do interest-free credit but tend to the pricier side.

I should say my DDs have Ikea ones and they seem really good for the price

I had to get a new mattress in a hurrah as my cat pooed and wed in it when trapped in the room all day. It's was not rescuable

Ended up in ikea and got a lovely one for 300 it's very comfortable. I'm really pleased with it.

Typo. It was
Most certainly not a hurrah. Well maybe for my cat. 😼

Hurry I mean to write.

You're supposed to change your mattress every 6-8 years.

I would always buy a decent mattress. Our last one was £1000. It is worth checking charity shops because they will have new/nearly new at a fraction of the price

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 08/06/2024 07:48

Thanks all. I dknt have the money to get a "decent" one just now and don't want to take out any credit

I am though, fed up with the dip so will have a look at IKEA, and charity shops to see what I can find.

Sleeping is what you do most all your life, it contributes to the length and quality of your life. As such it should be invested in and taken seriously. We tested a few out and spent £2k on our current super king. Well worth the comfort so we get a good nights sleep. Sleep, non-processed food and regular exercise are so important....

Even if there's nothing wrong with it, no dips, still have a good night's sleep? Then it goes to landfill or the incinerator, 10 or more of them in your lifetime?

I needed a new one when on a budget. Went on dreams and compared the highest rated ones - ended up with a king size around £300 and is by far the most comfortable mattress I've ever had. It is subjective though, I don't like memory foam and prefer medium softness. I've had it 4 years now and moved house in that time and still good!

Say the people who are in the business of selling mattresses.

Ours is 7 years old so apparently due for replacement. But there's nothing wrong with it so we'll not be buying a new one until we start to feel like it's necessary.

pietut · 08/06/2024 08:36

It's an area worth spending money on, our mattress cost about £1800 I think (super king though). I dont regret it for a second, 4 years in and feels as good as the day we bought it, the only downside is no other bed ever compares so holidays are always a tad disappointing!

pietut · 08/06/2024 08:38

Sorry didn't see your last comment, disregard mine.

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 08/06/2024 10:28

Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to spend a lot and get a really good mattress , I just don't have the money and will be needing to move (divorce) soon so dont want extra credit just yet.

That's what the Sleep Foundation recommend. A poor mattress affects quality of sleep.

Being 6-8 years old doesn't make it a poor mattress. Mine is 7, no dips whatsoever, I sleep very well on it. If your quality of sleep is affected then it's understandable to change it, but not if it's not.

suntannedsnowballsinhellskitchensink · 09/06/2024 12:48

Well..we have an Emma that was about £350 and we love it

The children have IKEA Hovag but I'm not sure they do them anymore. My friend bought a Valevag and swears by it - it was £279

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/06/2024 12:51

We spent £1200 on a king size Hypnos about 15 months ago. It's amazing. I never realised that it could be so comfortable. We paid it off at £100/month. I've even stopped my monthly physio appts for my back. We spent a good hour in the shop lying on mattresses and seeing which one suited, with guidance from the sales man. He did seem to know his stuff, and we didn't get guided to buying the most expensive!
