I've eaten 3 weeks out of date, that was still sealed. Sniff it and check for mould.

iloveeverykindofcat · 05/06/2024 07:18

To be honest, if it looked and smelled okay I'd eat it.

spriots · 05/06/2024 07:18

As long as it tastes ok/wasn't mouldy. It lasts weeks after the use by date in my experience

Months if it's been kept unopened in the fridge. It goes a bit sour (but is still perfectly edible), will be visibly off if it can't be eaten.

Crumpetdisappointment · 05/06/2024 07:25

it is nearly always opened

I’d take a look/sniff and a tiny taste before wolfing it down but I generally ignore dates in most things.

Dryplate · 05/06/2024 07:31

Yogurt is fine for weeks.

Doingmybest12 · 05/06/2024 07:31

I go by the 'do I fancy eating that' test. If it smells OK and looks OK it is ok , but if I look at it and think I don't fancy it (as in I'm unsure it's ok) , I don't eat it. Different people's fridges keep food differently.

reluctantbrit · 05/06/2024 07:39

Opened - only a couple of days unless it smells obviously funny.

Unopened - a week to two maybe.

Exactly that.

BigDahliaFan · 05/06/2024 07:40

Weeks if it looks fine…unopened.

opened…again it seems to still be fine for a couple of weeks.

justabigdisco · 05/06/2024 07:41

I used some Greek yoghurt yesterday that had a use by date of 2nd May. Totally fine

Janek · 05/06/2024 07:41

Quite a long time, even opened tbh. Once you take the lid off you don't know what the bbd was anyway. The only time I've ever thrown yoghurt out was when it was mouldy (and that was an unopened tub, it must have had something wrong with the seal).

justabigdisco · 05/06/2024 07:41

Oh and it had been opened

Goingasteady30 · 05/06/2024 07:57

I don't mess about with dairy products to be honest once they go out of date.

Peonies12 · 05/06/2024 07:58

It’s ridiculous they even put dates on things, it’s all a scam to create waste and make you buy more. I never check dates, just use your nose and eyes

TomeTome · 05/06/2024 08:01

If it’s live yoghurt then taste and see.

I don't mess about with them either. I just eat them (if they haven't gone off).

With milk, cheese, cream and yogurt it's very easy to tell if they're no good, so if they look/smell/taste edible, then I eat them.
I think the only time I've checked the Use By date on yogurt is when I need to know which tub to open next (I buy the big tubs from Lidl and sometimes stock up as they don't always have them when I go).

ichundich · 05/06/2024 08:06

Until it has mould on it. Especially if it hasn't been opened it should last for weeks still.

mydogisthebest · 05/06/2024 08:26

Unless it is mouldy I eat yoghurt out of date, often by weeks.

Lurkingandlearning · 05/06/2024 08:31

Crumpetdisappointment · 05/06/2024 07:25

If you don’t use it up quickly, put clingfilm directly onto the surface of the yogurt so there’s no air contact. That’ll increase the shelf life. But make sure you don’t leave loads on the inside of the carton above the yogurt because that will go mouldy

stripes92 · 05/06/2024 08:47

I eat it unless it's mouldy

Fizbosshoes · 05/06/2024 09:16

For me it depends when it was opened. If its out of date but opened 2 days ago I would prob eat (assuming looks and smells ok)
If opened 2 weeks ago I'd be more wary.

But use by dates aren't fail safe anyway. I've had (unopened) milk that's gone off before it's use by date so using smell/look is often a better gauge!!

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 05/06/2024 10:16

It depends whether it has added carbs, which makes it mould easily, I have found.
