Willie Wagtails are exactly what they were, if that's what's in your photo!

The photo that showed on the thread is the mudlark/peewee magpie - also aggro little twits (the sort who pick fights with their own reflections - they were forever crashing into the windows looking for trouble when I lived in Queensland). The willie wagtails are smaller still, more like sparrow size but with the long tail. The link should take you to the wikipedia article on them.

Asusefulasamarzipandildo · 07/06/2024 10:59

Because of this thread I've decided to get the local crows into my garden. I had some boiled eggs that were otherwise going to be thrown so I left them out, went and did the school run came home and they'd been eaten. SUCCESS! Now to work out what to leave them today.

Should I warn any bald neighbours of my plan?

Ah, thanks for that. They were definitely bigger than sparrows as I said, starling size. Loads of parakeets (?) too - noisy buggers they were!

Branster · 07/06/2024 11:13

@Madcats Yes! Think of her every time I see lots of crows. That was a hilarious and very educational thread. And a cautionary tale. I don't think she survived. Maybe we'll get a report from newspapers now the topic is newsworthy. I really want to know what happened!!! 😁

evtheria · 07/06/2024 11:14

@Madcats Still wondering where she is...

Its peacocks attacking cars around here. A better class of bird in Yorkshire than Dulwich..”

How very dare you?!

Crows are extremely bright. Peacocks are a bit dim. 😁

OneWorldly4 · 07/06/2024 11:40

I put out some bird food on our bird table. A crow 'friend' claimed in and visited everyday. I even named him. I've now ran out of the bird food but he's still visiting. Am i now at risk? Does he still consider me a friend? Should I be scared I ran out of food? I'm actually scared after reading this thread!!!

Needmorelego · 07/06/2024 11:49

@OneWorldly4 move house. It's the only solution.

You're welcome!

Yes, the parakeets, lorikeets, cockatoos and all the parrotty types are very noisy, especially when you get a flock of them flying overhead. What a racket!

Did you get to hear any kookaburras?

Deathraystare · 07/06/2024 14:24

Well if you two want to swap ours for yours!

Crows are amazing. I've been feeding a crow couple for years and every year they bring the babies to show them where to get an easy dinner.
They come and knock on the kitchen window when they want food. They're beautiful.
I'm glad they're on my side though, their beaks are huge.

So have I. She/he then brought two kids, and they basically live in my garden. When I come home from work they come flying, and if I don’t feed them on time they do everything they can to get my attention..stomping or dropping sticks on our outdoor area roof. They do give me presents too. I don’t dare not to feed them now. 😅

How very Greek. That's how Aeschylus died!

In 458 BC, Aeschylus returned to Sicily for the last time, visiting the city of Gela, where he died in 456 or 455 BC. Valerius Maximus wrote that he was killed outside the city by a tortoise dropped by an eagle which had mistaken his head for a rock suitable for shattering the shell, and killed him

Why am I laughing? I had outbursts of laughter most of the day over the Dulwich crowd but had calmed down by teatime then Aeschylus arrived and i couldn't help wondering if he was shiny bald or matte bald.
Would it have made any difference to the tortoise 's untimely fate if Aeschylus had been matte with no shine to attract the crow?
Suppose when the tortoises shell broke would the tortoise be invisible if matte or would it not matter at that range?

Sadly no, but we've seen them at Hamerton Zoo, in England. My daughter loved them.

Glad you've seen them - did you get to hear the famous laugh?

My sister's loved kookaburras for years. Feeds the local ones wherever she lives (she's in Queensland and often has them arrive on the deck looking for handouts).

SammyScrounge · 08/06/2024 02:15

Oh! I have just noticed that the villain was an Eagle not a crow. Well that changes everything.

Terry Pratchett used the eagle dropping the tortoise story as the climax of Small Gods. Bald head and all.

Weird! I'm reading a book about witches and they all have crows as their familiars. So that's basically a witch getting her revenge on all the people who wronged her...

Weyward?

I loved that book!

OneWorldly4 · 09/06/2024 07:46

OP, can we have an update please?

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 09/06/2024 07:51

Wallywobbles · 05/06/2024 03:19

Crows and magpies can pass down information through generations about people who are mean to them. So presumably some bald guy did something cruel and word got out. And I guess all bald men look the same from above!

Oh goodness. Birds do just attack they don't have to have been wronged by a bald man 😂😂

The place I work has beating terms and people are attacked multiple times a day. Work can't do anything because they aren't allowed to remove the nests. I've seen loads of folk been pecked and clawed at. Some bald, some with hair.
